Okay, so if you reach the 30 minute limit (hawhaw, that rhymed), will the jetpack suddenly start descending itself in a safe manner? Will it warn you before it descends?
I have a terrible time reading anything, so if anyone read the article, please tell me kthx.
I think it's ugly, too bulky...people want something sleek, sexy and fast, that doesn't fly like it's barely holding up and ready to crash. I don't like those mini-helicopters with their big blades, but I'd feel safer in that and I know it'll fly well. Plus you can get them for about $25k.
I agree with others, this is not a 'jet-pack'...this is a duct(fan)-pack...anyway, me no likey, definitely not worth paying $100k either. I'm sure someone will come up with a better solution.
bit crap for just 1 person, but if you could drop say 10 from a c-130 and have them carry 4-5 troops each and put in some guidance to make sure they touchdown in exactly the right spot like a busy market or a rooftop that would be excellent.
So basically it's engineers with a big budget trying to provide a solution for which there's no problem. It's not more energy efficient than a plane or helicopter, or more affordable, or more stealthy, or more practical. Why did they build it?
@johnello The army should be sensible enough not to use this. i mean, the guy is vunerable, and carrying several kilos of fuel on his back no doubt. and its noisy. Enemy would spot them and take them out from miles away.
A thirty minute flight with this, of a 30 second flight with Stuart Ross's Rocketbelt. I think the extra bulb is entirely forgivable.
It's also not limited to hovering above a water source like Raymond Li's JetLev, and less likely to decapitate anyone than the Gene corporation GEN H-4.
Once you drop unrealistic expectations based upon 1960's scifi, you realise this is pretty awesome.
Seriously though, it probably burns incredible amounts of fuel and is about the same size as a small helicopter or something anyway. But I refuse to not be excited, dammit!
It all comes down to the fuel. In the future we wont be using fuel, or batteries, we'll just generate the power in air with a mini fusion reactor. We could fly forever, almost.
nice video but you guys need to put more into the youtube vids, not just a link to more info in the description, many people will never even see that. Be informative, inspire. In the words of my favourite scientist (apart from myself that is) "what a fine day, For Science!".

@nepalihercules I'm glad we got over the name calling. Anyhow, yes you're right in that the x-jet and this Martin jet pack are two vehicles in the same category. However,a minivan & suv basically vary in their use. The 2 "jetpacks," however, do the same thing and I can't see how the Martin is better except for its safety features, which can be implemented on the x-jet as well. My point was that there is there is almost 40 yrs worth of tech difference btwn the 2 models & not much has changed...
Either the jet packs are getting bigger, or the people are getting smaller. :-/ They had smaller jet packs than this on I Dream of Jeanie & Gilligan's Island.
@kickit246 I am doing that now already mate, lol. That thing isn't even a jetpack any-more, it's a bloody Boeing 747 jet engine with a platform for the pilot...
@kickit246 no you don't get it, 50 yrs from now, we'll see this as a great accomplishment that set the foundation for them.
we landed on moon 40 yrs ago, in 100 yrs do you think we'll look back and laugh at moon landing? no, the we'll see it as a great accomplishment which set the foundation for space flight.
@kickit246 These things were first invented by Nazi Germany. The Himmelsturmer means heaven stormer, it was designed so the German Wehrmacht could hop over barbed wire fences easily.
@kickit246 Not really. There is a wall of physics. Burning jet fuel engines would cook your ass and the chemical reaction that fuels the cold jet engines requires a lot of fuel and only runs for a short time. The more weight you try to lift straight up, the more it takes in fuel and thrust to lift it. Look at the space shuttle, that's a major reason they are retiring it. Its a gas hog and Soviet vehicles are more efficient. This vid is more like propeller engines than a jet.
