i would not put john and george michael in the same bracket. John is an artist he is not its as simple as that. If you don't have the imagination or capacity to appreciate his music its your loss. Music is not the olympics its not about who is better than who or who can play the fastest its about expression and escapism. You clearly lack insight into what counts as art and what doesn't. Its not a judgement of you as a person merely an observation.

When you used as an argument the fact that Frusciante was "good" just because he was in "one of the biggest bands of all time, 10 or so solo albums and a huge following...". I'm afraid but I was caught in what it seems to be a "Frusciante Fan Channel" where the mandatory truth is that this dude can be comparable to real musicicans and composers as Roy Orbison, Bill Frisell or György Ligeti.

The people you named are all good artists however john is too. John composes a lot of music and used to spend 15hours a day practicing gutair just because you don't like this cover of a song doesn't make him a bad musician. Many people including jimmy paige, george clinton ect consider john to be one of the best gutairists of all time. John is a man in love with music and an exceptional talent and i'm sure roy orbinson would love this cover.

Practicing 15 hours a day doesn't ensure that someone will be a good musician. Proficient with their instrument, probably. But you can find thousands of musicians that can noodle on a guitar in very technical ways, but end up sounding generic because there's no real creativity there. I've heard all of his stuff, including with Mars Volta. Just not my thing.

i agree with you that spending lots of time practicing will not make you great. However in summary i think that john is undisputably is an original artist and the only variable is whether or not people prefer him as opposed to others. For example many people like hendrix's all along the watchtower where others prefer dylans. Its not a dispute of the value of the artist merely what people prefer.
