I recommend everyone reads Naomi Kleins book: "The Shock Doctrine" Where she puts forth a meticulously researched theory which has had wide critical acclaim (New York Times, The Guardian of London etc), that explains where we are and how we got into this world mess that allows the disposal of poor people in such a callous manner.
