3D pieces may look cool, but they are nothing for serious play. I always use the "old paper" 2D board theme.

Same here. The novelty of 3D pieces and different sets wears out compared to overseeable, clear default 2D.

I don't know about others but with all the Chessmaster games I owned, having access to all the different piece graphics didn't matter to me, I always ended up with the same pieces, which I think they called "Newspaper" as they was the clearest of the lot.
