@frankysandwich a lot of music from this era was recorded in mono and mixed for mono, since stereo wasn't as commonplace and not everyone had stereo systems. TVs and radio were mostly mono, too. today, most people hear the stereo mixes of these songs since stereo is everywhere. these often consisted of reprocessed tracks and hard panning (for example, with the drums and bass to one side and the guitar and keys to another with vocals up the middle).
@frankysandwich personally, i tend to prefer mono mixes most of the time. to me, the stereo mixes aren't as pleasant to listen to. but it's really up to the listener to decide what they like. for example, you should check out the beatles' revolver and compare the mono and stereo mixes. finding the original mono versions of songs that you know and love can sometimes be like listening to that record for the first time :)
@chubbsmagooo Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was so confused why they released that 'Beatles in Mono' boxset a few years ago when clearly everyone would just get the stereo version but yeah i understand it better now, thanks.
Just found your channel when looking for this great Beach Boys hit. I was in my early 20's when this peaked at #24 in '64 ... but should have gone higher. B. J. Thomas recorded his version that climbed to #17 in '77; however, the Beach Boys is my fav. Thx for the post. You do excellent work.
An excellent example of the Beach Boys' best harmony, and one of my most favorite Beach Boys songs! Makes me feel good when nothing is going right with my world!
Closing my eyes and drifting back in my mind to my dad's console...the thundering bass and hot midrange drivers...and this mini-opera. The bastard stereo mixes sure aren't how Brian designed songs like this...
NOT BAD....TRY TO USE LIQUID RECORD CLEANER AND RUN A LINE DOWN THE ENTIRE 45/33/LP.....THIS WILL KILL 90% OF THE HISS/DISTORTION AND DELIVER A CLEANER CRISP NEEDLE GROVE AND MUCH BETTER QUALITY SOUND....EDDIE
FWIW, the original mono mix of "Don't Worry Baby" appears on the 1993 30 Years of Good Vibrations box set. Essential listening for anyone who wants to seriously get into the Beach Boys.
@TeeTownSounds read up on analog vs digital. and because this vinyl recording has been digitized and then severely compressed upon uploading to youtube, this is not a true representation of vinyl. get a turntable, a good amp, good speakers, then compare vinyl to CD. vinyl will win.
This was the first Beach Boys 45 I bought, when I was in junior high. It's been done by others since '64 (B.J. Thomas, Billy Joel, et al), which shows it's good material. I read online that Brian Wilson was so impressed with Phil Spector's Ronettes that he wrote "Don't Worry Baby" as a tribute to them. When Spector rejected the song, Brian & the Boys recorded it instead.
Okay, I NEED to get a vinyl player...I don't know how you transfer the sound, but this (being played on youtube through crappy apple speakers) sounds better than the 3 CD copies I own being played on a very nice stereo sound system.
@rab2591 Another vinyl convert! Excellent! When you get a turntable, make sure you get one with a magnetic cartridge. If it's a USB turntable, Stanton makes excellent units with magnetic cartridges. You will also need a phono pre-amp as well. But it's well worth the effort if you appreciate great sound (which it sounds like you do!). Thanks for listening!
@WABCRADIO77 thanks for the info! I've been looking at the stanton models and like what I see (well priced and highly rated)! I know for sure my first vinyl will be 'Pet Sounds'...Thanks again!

The deadliest words to read on any album cover from the 60's: "electronically rechanneled to simulate stereo." Avoid at all costs.

Thanks for sharing these before they're lost forever. Kids today need to be exposed to these "real music" classics.

Gonna have to go with the Ronettes "Be My Baby" - these two songs are almost identical - this IS still good though.

SACD is better than vinyl because they can transfer the original analog master without having to compress. It plays at a higher bit rate than vinyl.

I just love those old Capitol 45s w/the yellow/orange swirl. It always reminds me of either The Beatles, or as in this case The Beach Boys.
