When I spar with several people who try to perform the tornado kick to show some flair, I simply burst in front of them or backstep.

After that I just do a roundhouse followed by a double air kick.

Tornado kicks aren't something you throw in the beginning or middle of a fight, it's more like a finisher - if you land a good blow to the head/temple/ear, or if your opponent is distracted by something - then you can go for this - if you know what you are doing and land a tornado kick to the side of the head the fight is over. Lots of strikes hit for more force, but not always to the head - this is a leg strike to the head - that's very different than a knee strike to the stomach.
