Thanx 4 puttin that masterpiece up. What a joy to hear sir Benson makin that Ibanez guitar sound so incredible, with his at all time devestating and breathtaking sence of time and rythm. One might wonder if the guitar ever was made for only Mr George Benson and his soul brother Wes Montgomery. Thanx again gbfan08
I love hearing that Hammond B3 organ underneath George's soloing. The two styles compliment each other well, and his rendition of this classic tune is quite good. Not like Barney Kessel's version, but still good.
George Benson occasionally sits in at local jazz clubs when he tours or wants to do some straight-ahead playing... typically after a concert at a big venue or maybe just for grins out of the blue. I wish I could somehow get advanced notice of when and where he plans to do this, because seeing GB in an intimate club setting would be worth alot to this jazz fan. Any ideas anyone? One clue - Benson used to sit in with Lou Donaldson alot since Lou employed George back in the old days...
One of the greatest solos on a 12 bar blues is Benson's whilrwind playing on Jimmy Smiths "I'll Drink To That". (from 1982) It's here somewhere on ytube. I have never yet heard a rollercoaster solo as fast as that before.
I remember this song. When i heard it again it was like going down memory lane when there was such as thing as love & lovers, badk then i remember that llovers were in love and flowers bloomed. :) Love that jazz!
Este para mim é o melhor música da minha história, minha vida... "completo", compõe, canta voz linda, e amigo íntimo da guitarra. Como esse homem toca guitarra um verdadeiro Deus dela
@Humanfactor7 Yes, his voice i can take or leave. I prefer Donny Hathaway or Marvin. But FEW can come close to his guitar technique. The chromaticism he uses is WILD, especially on tracks like "The Gentle Rain"or the Blues with Jimmy Smith called "I'll Drink To That!"
@taildragger53 How do you like the Ibanez guitars he has used over the years? I can't recall if he used something different in his early days, e.g. Gibson ES335 or the very popular jazz guitar, the Gibson es 135, etc...
@taildragger53: Hey, TD, how you doing? Ibanez archtops started off as Gibson knock-offs, but the company ultimately made some very fine instruments with a unqie identity, feel and sound. The GB models are nice, because they sound very good, but are smaller than some of the full-size Gibson archtops. I'd love to get my hands on a nice used GB model... GB's old GUild Starfire was a very nice-sounding guitar also. Benson 1968 to mid-1970s is his best, his prime years, in my opinion.
@GeorgiaBoy1961 Hello again! I knew you'd be on here ..ha ha! Yes, the Ibanez GB model guitars are compact. When i first saw one i thought it was a Les Paul variation. Benson & Santana more or less put 'Ibanez' on the map, so to speak. Then we saw John Scofield using one. --Oh yes, the period you mention contains Bensons best playing.
"Gentle Rain", "My Latin Brother" Serbian Workout"..great tracks!
@Humanfactor7 Check out the George Benson trax "No Sooner Said Than Done" or "Take Five" from the CD "Bad Benson" on ytube. These trax were done on a "Guild Starfire"..infact the cover photo is of GB with a Starfire, although it LOOKS like an ES Gibson model.
@Humanfactor7 Check out the trax "No sooner said than done" or "Take Five" from his early 70s album "Bad Benson". Those trax were done on a Guild Starfire. The LP cover shows him with the Guild although it's mistaken for a Gibson ES model. "Uptown" & "Cookbook" were also made on the Guild. 'Bodytalk' was another superb album of GB's..his best playing was done on those.
i love george benison.. i used to listen to him as a child.. he's one that made me have a passion for jazz. i love his music and this is a beautiful piece!
oh my god, is that him playing the guitar :V!?!?!? he's amazing! D: ... the only song I've ever heard by him is "Give me the night"... or whatever it's called... had no idea he was such a talented musician... if this is him playing... i mean...
@Booshibonton George is a guitar legend.........his playing actually got him to where he is now, the singing came later after it was recognized that he had a great singing voice.
@orlandoCF1 he actually was a singer before his guitar success. he recorded his first vocal single record with rca when he was ten and then rose to prominence through his jazz work.
@Booshibonton: This is indeed George Benson, before he became a pop-R&B superstar. GB has the distinction of being one of the handful of the very best jazz guitarists ever to play the instrument - some would say the best - and the creator of an entire style of playing. He went on the road as a jazz player with Jack McDuff at age 18 or something like that... very young. He and Pat Martino - another "young gun" of the 1960s - are regarded as Wes Montgomery's proteges. GB is a jazz legend...
@Booshibonton: Benson did most of his mainstream jazz playing in the ten-year span between 1964 and 1974, with his peak, IMO, between 1968-74. Check out "Ode to a Kudu" on the LP "Beyond the Blue Horizon" or the LP "Giblet Gravy" and the tune "Billie's Bounce" for some of his unique genius. The solo number "From Now On" on "This is Jazz No.9" CD is beautiful and a technical tour de force. There are many more performances worthy of your attention... happy listening!
@skipper8257 Mate, I am with you on that one. To me George, as great a player as he is, often showboats. The playing has a fair degree of ego behind it. But Larry to me is like him and the music nothing added unecessarily. That said, I only really got into Larry's playing recently. Now I'm hooked.
@skipper8257: Skipper, Larry Carlton is a fabulous player, but if you haven't heard Wes Montgomery (1965 or before), you haven't heard jazz guitar. What LC albums do you recommend?

My freind has one, very nice guitar, you can really play it loud, mid early 70's. About 1200 dlrs on ebay , I am looking for one.
@123kitl I just checked out George's interview celebrating the launch of the GB models; he says the first time he laid eyes and hands on them was in 1978. Since this recording was done in 1972, he couldn't have been playing an Ibanez GB model. Could he have been playing another IBanez model? donno, I haven't seen him in a while.
@cliffworks4321 Thanks for the info, good history. Lucky you got to work with GB. Joe Sample used to live down the street from me, then he moved back to Austin, he stated he wou ld bring GB by, but it never happened. BTW, I have 2 poytones, 1 15inch the other 4 10 inch speakers.
@123kitl hi kitl, sure I know Joe, first met in 70's at Mama Joe's Studio on an Ambrosia recording date,
what a masterful musician and beautiful man. He comes to Tokyo quite oten but I haven't been hangin out in a while, 3 kids keep me busy :-) BTW I didn't work with GB only hung out and played a bit when I was a kid. I did study and work with Tommy Gumina founder /CEO of Polytone Amps. Whenever Tommy calls for a favor I help out, he is till my guru. How are those old amps holding up?
@cliffworks4321 thks, the polytones are holding up great..many yrs old now. I also have a Vox and Peavy artist. BTW Joe S left Mammoth Lakes CA a few yrs back to spend more time in Tokyo... so when you free up some time I am sure you can catch him. He told me Japan has his biggest fan base. Joyce Moreno also spends a get deal of time in Japan, she is Brazilian if you havnt checked her out, I would love to see them play together.
@123kitl joe comes here a quite fequently usually on blue note tours, donno joyce, i don't hang very much these days, after recent diasters many concerts have been cancelled, thousands of foreigners ran away;
Check him out on Lee Ritenour's new cd " 6-string theory"! He totally kills " Moon River" in his own sweet jazzy swing groove. He also does a very incredable solo performance ( as in guitar only) on another cut, as only The Benz can. Much love, my sweet playin' brother!
From about 1968- 1977 George Benson was the greatest jazz guitarist. The natural heir to Wes Montgomery. Some of his later stuff lacks the passion of his straight ahead recordings. I would love to have a transcription of this.
This is amazing guitar playing, I love the way he sounds so fluid while at the same time having such great feel and expression. He plays so many notes yet they all grab your attention. To my ears he is one of the most creative and soulful jazz guitarist of all time.
Does anyone have "Pieces of Dream's" version of this song? It came out on vinyl in the early 80's, but never on cd. It can rival this amazing rendition.
@btjazzfann Acutally it was released on CD. It was released under a greatest hits release. I've got a copy. That's one of the best versions of that song ever recorded.
@vinceism1 don't you know that he is secretly just a classy rock star? hehe. check out his 'other' stuff and you'll know what i mean. having said that, he still rocks. i mean, yeah.
@vinceism1 Let me guess; you don't play an instrument, or if you do, you're not very good at it. I don't mean to offend you, my point is rather that if you really love rock, you won't outgrow it. My guess is that you never really found the kind of music you loved until you found this guy.
@Moh1Z I think you are repeating yourself, I think you have made your point???? Why does this issue bother you so much? just listen to the music! what is your problem?
GB is the final word in virtuosity, tone, style, feel.....he has become the benchmark by which modern players are compared. Listen to any of the recordings from the 60s and 70s....even when he is playing on unmemorable inane pop songs (some of the Beatles tunes, or the Monkees "Last Train to Clarksville") he is always great. How many of us can improvise on ANY song and do that?!
@Mrironmanson It's not that hard to tab or to play by ear, because he doesnt play ultra fast licks. The hardest part was recording and composing it...
what a beautiful sound he makes - so very musical in all his expressions.

Humanfactor7 6 months ago
@Humanfactor7 When i saw him in 1972 he used a 'Guild Starfire'..sort of shaped like an ES 345. Smaller & sharper cutaway.
He did most of his real early stuff and some of his CTI stuff on that one.(e.g. on 'Bad Benson' )
The tone was rock-ier..high on treble. The Ibanez he used during 1978-1980s was his own design ,GB10 or something.
Oh yeah, they are beautiful guitars..VERY LOW action..lower than on a LP Custom even. Heavy strings (14s). He sounds good on anything.
taildragger53 6 months ago
Respond to this video... I referenced the Gibson ES 135 in my last comment. I meant to say the Gibson ES 175 as the very favored jazz guitar.
Humanfactor7 6 months ago
@Humanfactor7 I think any of those ES jazz guitars are superb.
The range of tone is superb. Even rock players like Steve Howe uses an ES 175 although there's always a risk of feedback.
I recently bought an ES-339..not bad BUT not quite the same as a 335.
Ibanez make some nice guitars. Some techs i've met seem to rate them OVER Gibson in terms of quality.
Gibson quality is not quite the same as in the 1960s.(many will disagree but ..)

This is amazing guitar playing, I love the way he sounds so fluid while at the same time having such great feel and expression. He plays so many notes yet they all grab your attention. To my ears he is one of the most creative and soulful jazz guitarist of all time.

Absolutely FANTASTIC!!!! I mean total virtuoso. If he played this again 5 mins later it would not be exactly the same!! Improvising at its best!!

Does anyone have "Pieces of Dream's" version of this song? It came out on vinyl in the early 80's, but never on cd. It can rival this amazing rendition.
btjazzfann 1 year ago
@btjazzfann Acutally it was released on CD. It was released under a greatest hits release. I've got a copy. That's one of the best versions of that song ever recorded.

@vinceism1 And you can see every brush stroke.

@vinceism1 don't you know that he is secretly just a classy rock star? hehe. check out his 'other' stuff and you'll know what i mean. having said that, he still rocks. i mean, yeah.
jonjonz91 1 year ago
@vinceism1 Let me guess; you don't play an instrument, or if you do, you're not very good at it. I don't mean to offend you, my point is rather that if you really love rock, you won't outgrow it. My guess is that you never really found the kind of music you loved until you found this guy.

1:50 ... it might be fast, but beyond that lawd hab mercy that is beautiful LYRICISM on that run.

How many of us can improvise on ANY song and do that?!

pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaseeeee !
Mrironmanson 1 year ago
@Mrironmanson It's not that hard to tab or to play by ear, because he doesnt play ultra fast licks. The hardest part was recording and composing it...
