I just wanna say that you can only get away with hair and a dress like that, when you can sing circles around the best if 'em...Patti is a legend in her own time, but during that stretch thru the 80's, she was in her own league.
I remember watching this and wishing I could be there to hit Patti in the mouth. She sang her entire face off. I don't think the crowd knew exactly how to respond. Also, I loved her rendition of IMAGINE. Bravo, LaBelle!
I remember this when it was aired. Everyone was shocked just how amazing she was and how powerful she was. Even the other stars behind stage were in awe of this performance.
I heard Bette Midler say on a radio interview, recently, that singers who sing in this era are "missing something", she couldnt really express what she was saying with words. She said the Pattis and Arethas sing "because they HAVE TO...its not their desire, its in their DNA", she said. Bette mentioned being at this performance, because she introduced Patti's set, and she said when Patti was singing this, you could hear a pin drop backstage. She saw Cher, Grace Slick & Jack Nicholson crying.
MS. PATTI LABELLE HAS BEEN SO FABULOUSLY CONSISTENT FOR SO MANY YEAR! I was 2years old when she did this performance! That was 25 years ago & she's still booming!
Whenever I hear that line, "Imagine there's no Heaven" - I smile, I feel happy and peaceful, because it's always always bothered me to be surrounded by people who are not living today, who are so focused on what's after death, that they are missing the whole point of the gift of life, which I think must be very disappointing to God.
@sidbrown210 AMEN The TV Special with Cyndi Lauper as a guest. I will never forget that.....it was the best performance of "Imagine"! 25 years and I can still remember that. I'm pretty sure she had on a gorgeous red gown. Thanks for bringing that memory to the surface.
@donniehal I agree! When she sang "Imagine", wearing a red sequined dress, she sent shivers up my spine. That video was here on youtube, and now it's gone. I hope someone uploads it again!
u know, Ive watched this clip numerous times...but there was just something about the way he said "black lady performer" that didnt sit well with me this time. She has said how many times?, that she's not JUST a black singer...she's JUST singer. Annoying that people are perfectly comfortable being narrow-minded and dismissive of THINKING BEFORE OPENING THE FUCKIN' HOLE IN THEIR FACES!...Geez, if it were Barbara Streisand up there he wouldnt say a fuckin thing about her being white.
This was 1985 that was the norm back then, they would not do that now, back in the day they probably thought it was a compliment to describe her as that, I think to many years have passed to be shouting racism!
one of the dumbest replies Ive read thus far...like, how young/old are you? ...narrow-mindedness would encourage someone to say that it was a compliment. But I gurantee if you showed her the clip and asked HER how she felt about him calling her " a BLACK lady performer" she wouldnt feel too good about it. 1985, was 24 yrs ago..and u think that too many yrs have passed to have this kind of dialogue?. Grow up.. His intentions may have been on the level but it dont make the remark less racist.
Im not dumb and not narrow mided im 29 and agree that she should not have been described in that way, I was not saying it was ok for him to say it, I am just saying times have changed and at the time that probably would not have been considered a racist remark, now days it is considered racist I was just saying its a little late to be saying he was racist when it happened over 24 years ago.
Great replies ramsd....A helluva lot has changed since then; we are a pussified nation that is being told what to think and do all the time. I remember watching this live about 25' from the stage with a cigarette hanging from my mouth and noone gave a shit either
@pronkking in the music industry it was the norm to use the expression "Black" to refer to what is now called Soul or R&B. In fact, the Billboard Charts had a "Black" Chart which was primarily (but not exclusively) black artists.
But yes I agree the expression "black lady artist" does sound a bit ridiculous, as though he's never once listened to Patti LaBelle.
this was one of her 'ROCK STAR' moments. HUGE crowd of mostly white faces...at one of the largest filmed concerts in history...singing two songs in 'Imagine' and "Forever Young' that were written and sung by two of the biggest rock stars of all time. That shot of her standing there in front of the crowd while she's talking looked like it was straight from 'A Star Is Born' or "The Rose". She's so dramatic and spontaneous. And people who dont really know her well, still remember this performance.
when you put a mike in this broads' hands, she fills in the fuckin' blanks, ok?...to all the wanna-be-singers out there, if you cant bring this to the table, then you should just order carry out and stay at home....the only way to get another Patti Labelle, is thru stem cell research and it dont come cheap....
"one of the most exciting black lady performers in america" lol what a way to be introduced. psych. anyways, patti is just...my god she's just...amazing.

@pronkking I agree. However this was in 1985 and then things weren't that much different then for black artists like it was in the 60s.
