The original version of this monster classic by the great Bill Anderson is one of country music's absolute masterpieces. A stupendous live clip of it survives in the vastly underrated motion picture, Las Vegas Hillbillys. Only the founding father of country rock, Rick Nelson could pull off a credible cover of a record that was that perfect. Rick's early Decca material is certainly on par with his best known work for Imperial and his superb yet brief tenure with Epic in the late 1970s.
As James Burton said about a few years ago...Rick Nelson is the founder of Country Rock Music! Be nice if MCA would do a Rick Nelson Country CD from all of his material. Not likely though!
I had the double vinyl album that Ricky did, I gave it away after I copied all the songs (to Cassette) in those days, I now have them in my digital files, they are all great songs. and yes, why has it not come out on CD?. He was one of the best Rock n' Rollers and sang Country as well as anyone.
@barrygioportmorien1 thanks for posting. great song! I met Rick in 1979 & we dated from '80 to '82. we remained friends until his death in '85. he introduced me to helen blair, his girlfriend, who passed away with him in that horrible plane crash. will always miss my friend
such a sad loss....a band I managed in 1979 opened for Ricky in Vegas at Helldorado Days....
