Well really, it was multiple authors that wrote both series.

I am not too sure about for the Nancy Drew series, but I know the crossovers really aren't canon for the HB seeing as the earliest ones were done in 1984, but the real ones came around in '88. This is much beyond HB canon seeing as the last one was the Sting of the Scorpion, and that was done in '79.

Well actually both series were created by Edward Stratemeyer, who wrote under the pseudonyms Franklin W. Dixon for the Hardy Boys, and Carolyn Keene for Nancy Drew. Ghostwriters continued the stories later on after his death. The crossovers were actually done earlier, around '81. There was also the 70's television series.
