You feel the music in the way the instrumental part is played, not to mention the way he is singing the piece. You do not have to know the languageto feel the music, but it does help for some. It is a beautifully written melody & if sung and played with emotion can be very grandl, i do not know about suicidal, but meaningful. I have a copy of the sheet music &the English 'translation' of gloomy (sad)sunday that Sam Lewis and Desmond Carter coined do not do these words justice.

the original is not French it is Hungarian...Seress wrote different lyrics, but they were still in Hungarian.

the original is by reszo seress and it was recorded in 1933 and this is the second recording but instead its in hungarian not french ike the original

I do not like that version.... not here to make an argument, but the original version is amazing. The main reason I do not like Bilie Holidays version is because they made her add to the ending to make it 'happier' (in a sense). They should have left the original version as is....

Well actually this song is said to be a suicide song because about 4-5 people died having the lyrics in their hand just after the release of the song. And after that it became an anthem of the suicides in Hungary, they used this song as a suicide note. Best wishes from Hungary

I don't know why, but this song makes me more happy than sad. Just because of incompetent weaklings, Seress's career was ruined. The power of this song is just unbelievable. It has been adopted a thousand of times by all kinds of artists. Just to acknowlegde the divinity a three minute song has makes it even more beautiful. Beautiful song.. that is timeless.. it tells a story. not only of a love thats lost, not only of wanting to commit suicide.(for that reason) But It is timeless for its History. The time that it represents, and the people it haunted and the people who remember it today. You can really feel the emotion, the sadness and the pain of the time in this song.

Hmm, I'm not to sure, I'm not sure we'll ever know. I do have a bit of Rezso Seress actualy playing and singing the song, but I have no idea when that was recorded, and it's not that sad because what people said about him was true, he couldnt really sing or play the piano, as well as say this version for example.
