@DeShaadman you can get some great stuff free. My last copy of windows ultimate was a bit more then free. And I use my Ubuntu way more then my windows.
@DeShaadman Finally, the rate of growth of Linux is astounding. It's come a long way in the relatively short time span (compared to Windows) that it's been around. Firstly, Linux is free and open source. This means that you can install as many copies of it as you want, and you'll get updates to the software for free. Secondly, Linux is unbelievably customizable. There isn't really anything you can't customize.

What most people (even those in the open source community) don't realize is that a lot of the modern desktop effects (like transparency) where influenced by development on open platforms like Enlightenment back in the 90s. Rob Malda (Slashdot) actually got the whole transparency thing kicked off with a joke terminal window background back in 1997. And then there is BeOS, experimental X windows stuff, etc.. OS X came much later, then Windows Vista even later.
@KDALove one more thing... i also go to college and in order for me to get my degree i have to take some Microsoft classes as well as Linux classes, so if they don't teach you Linux at your college, how are they preparing you? you may want to change college...
Not to criticize - but my workstation was very slow this morning. The System Monitor/Processes view revealed that compiz was sucking 50+% of my CPU. I killed it and the system is snappy again.
I have 2GHz dual core and high performance video card. I believe that my only benefit was the cool video effects while dragging windows. That was working fine for a long time without performance issues.
wow over 1 million views. Linux is growing big time now lol. :o stolen from windows 7 ur fucking kidding me right?????? wahahahhahahahha...sure... what ever u say bud. How can that be if compiz existed years before 7 was ever released. dont u think its the other way around. Like 7 stole KDE's looks. :s
Personally, I don't care about the "open source" issue. It's probably nice to have the source to your system if you speak C, C++, Python and Perl, but I don't, so I don't care. I really don't much care about price. I can afford a couple hundred bucks for a Windows CD if I want it. I do play a few games on occasion - that's what a PS3 is for. I want web browsing, spreadsheets, video playback, PDF viewing/printing, etc. - and I want it to not crash. So I use Ubuntu on my laptop and desktop.
@f22k221 Microsoft is a business. We live in a capitalistic economy. Get over it. Ubuntu has become bloated. Most of the software you mentioned aren't used by professionals. Our Arts and Technology department at my college teaches every student with AutoDesk Maya and the Adobe Suite. You can keep your GIMP, thank you very much.
@KDALove well clearly you need to learn more about Linux... not only ubuntu... but others... did you know that fedora was the one to came out with virtualization?
did you know that it has came with new file systems?
did u know that those filesystems try to avoid fragmentation?
which clearly performs better that a fragmented system.
do you know what is XEN?
did you know that fedora ("test-bed" for Red Hat that is use in a large number of organizations) is use by multiples organization as well?
@f22k221 I've used Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Damn Small Linux, Pupply Linux, Slax Linux, and some other lesser known distros. All of them do not compare to the experience I had to Windows 7. So yes. Red Hat may have an upper hand in the business market but Windows 7 is more user friendly than any major Linux distro out there.
@KDALove My experience with windows 7 has been pretty one dimensional, it still only comes with one desktop and is very limited in customization options.
And user friendliness is mainly down to what you are used to, i personally think ubuntu's way of installing applications is much easier than windows.
@ontheroof99 quite a lot of money, but it is required for the classes I will take soon. Right now I'm making some money with photoshop with logo/banner designs but it will pay off once I graduate. ;)
@ontheroof99 Look buddy, just because something is free doesn't make it "better". Firefox loads slow because it's being bloated by the Mozilla foundation, my Windows 7 boots from login to desktop under 15 seconds. There has been regression when I updated Ubuntu (thank you kernel updates) so now I'm forced to use generic drivers which means no 3D acceleration. You want to be cheap and use a mediocre OS fine by me. But I'll take 7 over Ubuntu any day ;)
@ontheroof99 Another issue with the driver is the fact that with every Linux kernel release or OS release, there is bound to be driver problems. Frequent kernel update is all fun and games except when you're trying to create drivers. Which is why many manufacturers don't even bother making Linux drivers. There is no specific standard on this.
@ontheroof99 Home Pre is 159.99. Which is worth the money considering you're getting an OS that almost all major programs support, which has great driver support AND application support, polished interface, and faster speed ( boots faster than openSuSE, Fedora, and Ubuntu on my laptop)
@ontheroof99 99% of the drivers working my ass. I have tried Linux on multiple pc's and on each of them I was forced to search though the internet to find solutions. The open source programs offered by Linux don't come close to the professional counterparts. The art department in my college uses Dreamweaver and Photoshop to teach the lessons. So I'll take Photoshop proficiency over "GIMP" any day specially since most employers want phototshop experience when you do get your degree in those fields
@ontheroof99 Look Linux is superb for servers but for desktop computing, its good for giving it to your grandma so she can check her email and maybe watch some cooking videos on YouTube. But for serious computing and gaming, Windows is the only viable choice. I honestly don't care about visuals. I disabled The visual style on my Windows 7, I just have the standard gray GUI.
@ontheroof99 I agree that Vista may have been bad but Windows 7 pretty much fixed all that. Windows 7 is already the fastest selling OS in history....
@ontheroof99 Not when I tried it. And I get instant mail notifications on my email app so I can respond fairly quickly. And no, I had a lot of trouble when trying Adobe products with wine. Windows 7 already surpassed Linux desktop marketshare. Bitch about it all you want but Windows is still better ;)
@ontheroof99 Yeah, those aren't professionaly made software that you could use for serious movie editing. And when I mean flash I mean Flash the producer not the player....as in Adobe Flash CS4, moron.
@ontheroof99 Really? Name me one professional video editing tool that would go on par with Sony Vegas, Adobe Primere/After Effects. Name me one HTML editing suite that can go head to head with Dreamweaver/Fireworks. Name me one Flash creating tool that can compare to Adobe Flash.
@ontheroof99 Actually no. I hate Microsoft as well but for different reasons. They have slow update schedules, loose privacy, and a lot of bloatware. But they have better support for hardware, games, and applications so that makes up for it . =)
@ontheroof99 Moreover, I've used Photoshop and GIMP and they are not similar. Photoshop is well polished and I would not take any alternative to it. Same with Dreamweaver, same with Sony Vegas, same with every other professional editing tool available. Not to mention I can't play modern games on it. WINE is useless. I can't play at two frames per second.
@ontheroof99 I format my PC every few weeks. No matter what, I have a fresh installed image of my Windows with preinstalled software/games/drivers. While on Ubuntu I have to bend over backwards to find compatible nVidia drivers, then only to find out that the proprietary nVidia drivers themselves aren't that good, then search the web for hours trying to find wireless LAN driver, then for the HD audio, then for the smart card readers. It's too much hassle for a mediocre performance.
@ontheroof99 1)What viruses? I've been using it for months now and I haven't gotten a single virus. 2) I don't mind paying for programs if they deliver what they promise
3) I haven't gotten a blue screen since I used Windows XP. And that was years ago.
On the other hand, I've gotten multiple errors when synaptic crashes while trying to install packages.
@luisgdh No fuck linux. You can go play with your kiddie GIMP and other lame opesource software. I'll stick with my Modern Warfare, Photoshop and Sony Vegas :)
every thing worked properly when I followed your tutorial but when I press Ctrl+Alt+Move Window like you said nothing happens and what is a "super" key? possibly the windows button?
@puttabutta I see there are a lot of windows fanboys with absolutely no knowledge commenting. Great Demo by the way. For windows fanboys, the following link represents some facts you probably should know:
@aaronpzcr "The Song is "Ya Ya" on "The Early Tapes of The Beatles" album. I don't know if it's a Beatle singing, but I believe they're playing in the background." Read the description...
has anyone had success with ati radeon drivers and compiz? i know the HD series is a nightmare, and I am about to purchase a laptop and have Nvidia in mind for that reason.
I want to know if compiz can work with radeon without tweaking like it can with nvidia, thanks
@RealNeurotiq Well there are a FEW issues with some effects but personally i never enable them. Window motion blur is one for me but who REALLY needs that :P
@Mandragara I need them all, because they are awesome. The point is, the operating system should be compatible, and short comings are bugs that need to be ironed out.
i'd rather use linux on nvidia than risk issues with ati. once linux can figure out how to write good drivers for ati, imagine the systems that can use compiz, say, the wii, lol
So many of you ignorant folks really believe that linux is all eyecandy, true its an easy way to draw the youth in, but down to the core its a solid and serious piece of work which is far more complexed than windows. great video man 5 *
Just because all you see on youtube is compiz fusion doesn't mean that people don't do serious work on the desktop. This just happens to be fun eyecandy that looks pretty even if it's overkill. I'm sure my desktop from 2 years ago was a bit overkill but it was an excellent way to showcase Compiz Fusion.
My desktop now on my laptop has the cube disabled. I use it for college to write essays and to browse the web. I'm not going to post a video of me writing an essay, though.
LOL, I have to say that a video of a guy writing an essay sure be most interesting than 90% of youtube videos. I think that linux going eyecandy will atract more people and that's great.
i want to install compiz fusion and a lot of other utilities, but i have no f-ing idea how, as i'm new to linux.i have kubuntu K.D.E. 8.1...can anyone help?
and i know i can learn myself, but this stuff looks really cool and i want to have it now.
would it help if i install a newer version?....maybe they come preloaded in them???
The newest KDE (KDE 4) doesn't support Compiz very well because it has its own built-in desktop effects. If you got standard Ubuntu it comes with compiz pre-installed, with all these effects and more.
The rock n roll boogie which accompanies the video is really marvelous. I haven't heard it before, I guess Jerry Lee Lewis, the title as he says is Yo Yo? Congratulations. (By the way I have openSUSE) Can you tell us the graphics card?
Ubuntu comes with all the effects installed, but they aren't enabled. Open up Add/Remove Programs (or the Software Store if you're in Karmic) and install CompizConfig-Settings-Manager. Then, you can enable any effects that aren't already by clicking the checkbox. For the cube you'll want to enable Cube and Rotate Cube, and maybe Cube Reflection and Distortion. Experiment with it. Have fun!
In my opinion with the sudo apt-get commands and the repositories it is so easy to install and remove applications and themes (I run ubuntu which in my opinion is the easiest to install and get to work from the get go). It also demands much less than windows in terms of power and memory.
In many cases, Compiz is lighter on the processor because Metacity (the default no-thrills WM) uses software rendering whilst Compiz does hardware rendering. However, latest Metacity supports basic compositing (transparency, smooth moving windows) so I don't know how this has changed.
Some of this is useless eyecandy that just wastes cpu cycles, but some I actually use and find useful (like the expose clone). Linux is not for everyone (not for most people actually) but I find it really great for doing work (programming, typing papers, etc).
I'd be all for Ubuntu, the general idea and interactiveness is great, and the visuals are amazing. Except: the fundamentals don't work half of the time unless you're skilled enough to fix them (and with so many versions, following an online guide is nearly impossible), and Wine doesn't work at all - at least not for me. Oh, and it wouldn't kill the designers to add a normal GUI option instead of making everything terminal-based.
I like Ubuntu because I find the opposite is true. I am often searching for drivers for Windows, yet Ubuntu has most if not all required drivers pre-installed as kernel modules. (Disclaimer though, I don't use Vista (hate it) only XP so maybe this has changed?)
I think Windows 7 will have drivers built into it, not sure though. Like I said, I love how Ubuntu works with you in certain ways, but then it's still "freeware" and acts like it. For example, I can't get something as good as Photoshop on Ubuntu, and I can't install it because Wine doesn't work.
I have CS3. But it wasn't only Photoshop. I've tried multiple installations/versions of Ubuntu, and Wine never worked for me with anything. I just gave up and figured if I used Ubuntu it was only with the apps that it came with or that are made for Linux.
1. Linux =/= Ubuntu. Ubuntu is nice, and often times it's easy, but it's not the best for some things, and it doesn't have the best documentation either.
2. There are GUI's for just about anything now. If you know the commands, great. If not, most quality Desktop Managers have links to them right in the menu or settings panels. The terminal is such a powerful tool that most people who are comfortable with Linux find it is easier and faster to use the terminal than use a GUI for many common tasks
3. Skilled enough? It's an equivalent amount of knowledge most often, just not one people have learned. Most people have used Windows so long they have seen are researched how to do common tasks, but never in Linux. Would it take any less time to figure out in Linux then it did all those years ago in Windows? Again with a KDE example, most people know how to change file associations in Windows, but a lot of new Linux (with KDE) users can't figure it out in Linux Go figure, it's almost the same
I know there's a learning curve with everything, but I don't think it's the same with Linux. If I download an .exe file on Windows, I double-click and it sets up automatically. With Linux, to get a certain part of the OS set up (for example, a theme) I had to spend hours figuring out why the theme wasn't compatible until I realized you can only install certain formats, and only through the theme manager when it's already running. Why can't one theme format work for all versions of Ubuntu?
maybe not for themes, but package installation in ubuntu is about as close to one click as you can get, plus dependencies and updates are handled automatically, far from a dream in windows...
Well call me stupid, but it took me a year of on and off usage to get used to Ubuntu. Nothing technological I used before was more difficult to learn, and I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one who encountered countless of issues and impractical approaches and a lack of UI support while tying out Linux.
i won't deny there issues, but it is getting better. personally i've found the switch easy to get used to as an ex-vista user, but with anything new there is a learning curve.... it easily took me a year or so to get used to using windows when i first got a pc

Linux is for dateless wonders living in their parents' basement that have the social skills of a cow. They take out their insecurities with the world by dwelling in fantasies that having to type bullshit commands into a cheesy ass command prompt makes them "smart". Linux users in 1999, "We don't need graphics. Graphics are for stupid people". Linux users in 2009, "Look at my wobbly windows and floating cube!". What a joke.
I worked in Union Card for a much longer time than to have to hear your worthless comments. XP may have been better than Vista, but it was still the typical buggy Windows shit. I stand my point, 98 SE was a better OS. Like I said, if you overlooked gaming for a second, you might understand what I mean, but you probably won't anyway because it's turning out you're one of those typical stubborn Windows users living their life in denial. Linux runs the world, Windows runs in basements of gamers.
can you think?
write a program, based on linux, and be famous.

Compiz is cool and I like it!
YMMV

Personally, I don't care about the "open source" issue. It's probably nice to have the source to your system if you speak C, C++, Python and Perl, but I don't, so I don't care. I really don't much care about price. I can afford a couple hundred bucks for a Windows CD if I want it. I do play a few games on occasion - that's what a PS3 is for. I want web browsing, spreadsheets, video playback, PDF viewing/printing, etc. - and I want it to not crash. So I use Ubuntu on my laptop and desktop.

@KDALove you do realize that Microsoft means MONEY and opensource means FREE right?
and for those programs that U pay for...
GIMPshop, Gimp, Krita, Sodipodi, Inkscape, Avidemux, Openshot, Kdenlive, Cinelerra... and i can keep going...
so good luck doing what you do... couse i will keep on doing the same thing you do... but i pay...NOTHING
f22k221 1 year ago 20
@f22k221 Microsoft is a business. We live in a capitalistic economy. Get over it. Ubuntu has become bloated. Most of the software you mentioned aren't used by professionals. Our Arts and Technology department at my college teaches every student with AutoDesk Maya and the Adobe Suite. You can keep your GIMP, thank you very much.
KDALove 1 year ago
@KDALove well clearly you need to learn more about Linux... not only ubuntu... but others... did you know that fedora was the one to came out with virtualization?
did you know that it has came with new file systems?
did u know that those filesystems try to avoid fragmentation?
which clearly performs better that a fragmented system.
do you know what is XEN?
did you know that fedora ("test-bed" for Red Hat that is use in a large number of organizations) is use by multiples organization as well?
f22k221 1 year ago

@ontheroof99 lol? "computer specialist" - well good for you! I use command prompt to restore my lost data ;]
I'm out as well.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Look buddy, just because something is free doesn't make it "better". Firefox loads slow because it's being bloated by the Mozilla foundation, my Windows 7 boots from login to desktop under 15 seconds. There has been regression when I updated Ubuntu (thank you kernel updates) so now I'm forced to use generic drivers which means no 3D acceleration. You want to be cheap and use a mediocre OS fine by me. But I'll take 7 over Ubuntu any day ;)
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Another issue with the driver is the fact that with every Linux kernel release or OS release, there is bound to be driver problems. Frequent kernel update is all fun and games except when you're trying to create drivers. Which is why many manufacturers don't even bother making Linux drivers. There is no specific standard on this.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Home Pre is 159.99. Which is worth the money considering you're getting an OS that almost all major programs support, which has great driver support AND application support, polished interface, and faster speed ( boots faster than openSuSE, Fedora, and Ubuntu on my laptop)
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 99% of the drivers working my ass. I have tried Linux on multiple pc's and on each of them I was forced to search though the internet to find solutions. The open source programs offered by Linux don't come close to the professional counterparts. The art department in my college uses Dreamweaver and Photoshop to teach the lessons. So I'll take Photoshop proficiency over "GIMP" any day specially since most employers want phototshop experience when you do get your degree in those fields
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Look Linux is superb for servers but for desktop computing, its good for giving it to your grandma so she can check her email and maybe watch some cooking videos on YouTube. But for serious computing and gaming, Windows is the only viable choice. I honestly don't care about visuals. I disabled The visual style on my Windows 7, I just have the standard gray GUI.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 I agree that Vista may have been bad but Windows 7 pretty much fixed all that. Windows 7 is already the fastest selling OS in history....
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Not when I tried it. And I get instant mail notifications on my email app so I can respond fairly quickly. And no, I had a lot of trouble when trying Adobe products with wine. Windows 7 already surpassed Linux desktop marketshare. Bitch about it all you want but Windows is still better ;)
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Yeah, those aren't professionaly made software that you could use for serious movie editing. And when I mean flash I mean Flash the producer not the player....as in Adobe Flash CS4, moron.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Really? Name me one professional video editing tool that would go on par with Sony Vegas, Adobe Primere/After Effects. Name me one HTML editing suite that can go head to head with Dreamweaver/Fireworks. Name me one Flash creating tool that can compare to Adobe Flash.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Actually no. I hate Microsoft as well but for different reasons. They have slow update schedules, loose privacy, and a lot of bloatware. But they have better support for hardware, games, and applications so that makes up for it . =)
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Suffers from regressions :/
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 Moreover, I've used Photoshop and GIMP and they are not similar. Photoshop is well polished and I would not take any alternative to it. Same with Dreamweaver, same with Sony Vegas, same with every other professional editing tool available. Not to mention I can't play modern games on it. WINE is useless. I can't play at two frames per second.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 I format my PC every few weeks. No matter what, I have a fresh installed image of my Windows with preinstalled software/games/drivers. While on Ubuntu I have to bend over backwards to find compatible nVidia drivers, then only to find out that the proprietary nVidia drivers themselves aren't that good, then search the web for hours trying to find wireless LAN driver, then for the HD audio, then for the smart card readers. It's too much hassle for a mediocre performance.
KDALove 1 year ago
@ontheroof99 1)What viruses? I've been using it for months now and I haven't gotten a single virus. 2) I don't mind paying for programs if they deliver what they promise
3) I haven't gotten a blue screen since I used Windows XP. And that was years ago.
On the other hand, I've gotten multiple errors when synaptic crashes while trying to install packages.

i have a question if anyone can help,
has anyone had success with ati radeon drivers and compiz? i know the HD series is a nightmare, and I am about to purchase a laptop and have Nvidia in mind for that reason.
I want to know if compiz can work with radeon without tweaking like it can with nvidia, thanks
RealNeurotiq 1 year ago
@RealNeurotiq It works fine - Just download the official ati drivers and then get it to generate the distro specific debs (or rpms) you need
Mandragara 1 year ago
i heard that there was a major performance issue even if they got working at all, like it would drop 400 fps or something
RealNeurotiq 1 year ago
@RealNeurotiq Well there are a FEW issues with some effects but personally i never enable them. Window motion blur is one for me but who REALLY needs that :P
Mandragara 1 year ago
@Mandragara I need them all, because they are awesome. The point is, the operating system should be compatible, and short comings are bugs that need to be ironed out.
i'd rather use linux on nvidia than risk issues with ati. once linux can figure out how to write good drivers for ati, imagine the systems that can use compiz, say, the wii, lol
RealNeurotiq 1 year ago
@RealNeurotiq Fair point. But you must realize ATI codes the drivers for their cards. Linux developers are not left with much to play with

Linux fanboys are obsessed with spinning a cube around all fucking day, but no mention whatsoever of the WORK you can get done in Linux.
That's why I stay with Windows. I don't need to stare at a fucking cube spinning around on the desktop as a substitute for accomplishing something.
JesusManson323 2 years ago
Just because all you see on youtube is compiz fusion doesn't mean that people don't do serious work on the desktop. This just happens to be fun eyecandy that looks pretty even if it's overkill. I'm sure my desktop from 2 years ago was a bit overkill but it was an excellent way to showcase Compiz Fusion.
My desktop now on my laptop has the cube disabled. I use it for college to write essays and to browse the web. I'm not going to post a video of me writing an essay, though.

The newest KDE (KDE 4) doesn't support Compiz very well because it has its own built-in desktop effects. If you got standard Ubuntu it comes with compiz pre-installed, with all these effects and more.

Have fun!

StupidlyRandom 2 years ago
I'd be all for Ubuntu, the general idea and interactiveness is great, and the visuals are amazing. Except: the fundamentals don't work half of the time unless you're skilled enough to fix them (and with so many versions, following an online guide is nearly impossible), and Wine doesn't work at all - at least not for me. Oh, and it wouldn't kill the designers to add a normal GUI option instead of making everything terminal-based.
PoliticalHell 2 years ago
I like Ubuntu because I find the opposite is true. I am often searching for drivers for Windows, yet Ubuntu has most if not all required drivers pre-installed as kernel modules. (Disclaimer though, I don't use Vista (hate it) only XP so maybe this has changed?)
ubuntututorials 2 years ago
I think Windows 7 will have drivers built into it, not sure though. Like I said, I love how Ubuntu works with you in certain ways, but then it's still "freeware" and acts like it. For example, I can't get something as good as Photoshop on Ubuntu, and I can't install it because Wine doesn't work.
PoliticalHell 2 years ago
What version of PS? I heard CS2 works well.
ubuntututorials 2 years ago
I have CS3. But it wasn't only Photoshop. I've tried multiple installations/versions of Ubuntu, and Wine never worked for me with anything. I just gave up and figured if I used Ubuntu it was only with the apps that it came with or that are made for Linux.
PoliticalHell 2 years ago
The terminal is such a powerful tool that most people who are comfortable with Linux find it is easier and faster to use the terminal than use a GUI for many common tasks
gravy21 2 years ago
3. Skilled enough? It's an equivalent amount of knowledge most often, just not one people have learned. Most people have used Windows so long they have seen are researched how to do common tasks, but never in Linux. Would it take any less time to figure out in Linux then it did all those years ago in Windows? Again with a KDE example, most people know how to change file associations in Windows, but a lot of new Linux (with KDE) users can't figure it out in Linux Go figure, it's almost the same
gravy21 2 years ago
I know there's a learning curve with everything, but I don't think it's the same with Linux. If I download an .exe file on Windows, I double-click and it sets up automatically. With Linux, to get a certain part of the OS set up (for example, a theme) I had to spend hours figuring out why the theme wasn't compatible until I realized you can only install certain formats, and only through the theme manager when it's already running. Why can't one theme format work for all versions of Ubuntu?
PoliticalHell 2 years ago
maybe not for themes, but package installation in ubuntu is about as close to one click as you can get, plus dependencies and updates are handled automatically, far from a dream in windows...
StupidlyRandom 2 years ago
Well call me stupid, but it took me a year of on and off usage to get used to Ubuntu. Nothing technological I used before was more difficult to learn, and I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one who encountered countless of issues and impractical approaches and a lack of UI support while tying out Linux.
PoliticalHell 2 years ago
i won't deny there issues, but it is getting better. personally i've found the switch easy to get used to as an ex-vista user, but with anything new there is a learning curve.... it easily took me a year or so to get used to using windows when i first got a pc
