@zubinmohamad But what is so typical Malay? This performance made me wonder. The hand stances looked like Indian classical dance. The hair of the women is loosely covered and the men are dressed in white. Typical Muslim dress. This music resembles the one played during Muay Thai fights. An interesting mix indeed!
I'm Cham. Mom from Cambodia and Father from Malaysia. Both can tell me the same history of Champa. Yes, some Cham people have mixed Indian blood, many of my friends look Pakistani/Indian (desi). Some look dark and some look "chinky". Cham branched out so far that God knows where each Cham were branched from. I have the Malay and Cambodian cultures in me but believe me, I rather be in Malay than in Srok Khmer because the hell w living in poverty. Assalamu Alaikum
"my father side from india" LMFAO, is this what you want all of us to believe? telling annoymous ppl on the internet and expect us to believe that? and you look really half indian right? LOL
you say that just to make yourself(a viet) feel more exotic but inside, you are jealous of other southeast asians and their culture because they are more exotic than your viet culture....which looks more chinese!!!! LOL
Hey dear, AzimahZarour is right. I am full champa from Ninh THuan VietNam... Living in Australia at the moment, but Alot of champa looks very pakistanian, Malay, Indonesian including myself... We have a very strong indian culture too... My whole family is Hindu... and others are Islam... Come to vietnam and see for yourself... we dont look ching chong... even viet (Kinh) some of them look filo.... Dont Judge when the world is only a book for u...
i vietnam....we so yellow and chinky compare to other southeast asian!!!! even our culture the most different.....our girl wear the ch!nky ao dai dress and guy wear silly kung fu looking clothes....heheeheheh
"poor cham people....they had a language, nation and history but havent country.fucker vietnamese erased cham history and civilization......"
Cham people are part of the Malay race and the have a home that will welcome them= MALAYSIA= To understand this you need to understand our history. You have to start with SRIVIJAYA. 2000 years ago.
Our ancestors wrote our history on stones and nobody can erase that!
I'm intrigued, they say the Cham people were Hindus and they were Muslims, I don't think this is possible. Also artistically, when I watched the dance I can't help but noticed a bunch of guys were beating on women because they were rejected or what? Please forgive me if I was mistaken.
Yes Cham people are Muslim AND Hindu. In the past Islam was much more attractive to the general population whereas Hinduism was mostly associated with the Nobles and higher ups, probably to retain political/social power over the people. As for the dance, LOL, they aren't beating up on the women. Its actually a separate scene where they are riding their horse to the girl's destination. When they get there, they help cure her from the demons (in an earlier scene they made them sick)
bangsa cham(cham people) are related to malays in malaysia, indonesia, philippine and the pacific islands. our language from the malayo-polynesian family . while, the khmer language originated from sea asia monda/munda language of india(austroasiatic family). the cham and khmer riligion were same (hindu) before. champa and khmer were old kingdom in southeast asia. i am cham i considering my self as khmer as well since i grew up with khmer.
U are one idiot poser, I found on youtube that fucking dumb. U must think all people are dumb as your mom and your dad don't recognize your dumb ass poser is pretending to be Vietnamese. I'm myself a Vietnamese, but my father side is from India and I was known as nguoi Kinh. Although Nguoi Kinh, nguoi Cham, nguoi Khmer v.v in a country like Vn has 54 ethnics group of people, but we are now knowing as Vietnamese. We are bro & sis we'r sharing one nation and that Vn.
I'm not a cham u khmer boy.. I'm a Malaysian and I have no chamic blood flowing in my vein.. But i admired the cham malaysian descent because they are successful and hardworking.. However, there are no malaysian of khmer descent living in my country and pity the khmer is running the most poorest country in ASEAN - cambodia
lol sure and malaysian are great nation yep yep believe what you want. And yes im khmer . Hope you know kampuchea dont give shit about malayasian , we dont want anything to do with u.
Hahaha...yes, the Chams are Muslims. But they are not interested in Islamo-centric ghazis like you...they have their own culture and history, as well. Insha'allah.
No, bin Laden. The world is not that simple...nor is the human experience that simple. People pick and choose what works for their own experiences. No Cham wants to be like you.
What is this blasphemy? What is this filth? You CANNOT pick and choose what works best for you or do things your own way when its from the holy quran. You either follow the quran properly or you are a heretic destined for hellfire. It's as simple as that.
Whoa easy there. First off, lets get this Bin Laden thing situated, he works for the CIA and Al-Qaeda was created by the CIA, so screw anyone who thinks otherwise. Look it up.
Anyways, many Chams are faithful to the religion they profess. Yes the majority of Chams are of the Sunni branch. However, you cannot deny indigenous influence in the way different Cham communities practice religion. No one can judge anyone's action or their afterlife's destination other than God.
Is that your way to convince people os what you think is the "true" path? LOL
I left Islam because of that; I am a Mahayana Buddhist now...look it up...and seeing your youtube page, I don't think Al-Nabi would approve! LOL
You're not a real Muslim, just an Islamo-thug who hinds behind western political correctness, because it is the only society now today that would put up with your hypocruitical life.
I don't understand you. All this talk of islamo facism. Yes, where I'm from in North Nigeria, Osama Bin Laden is regarded as a hero but that doesn't mean that I support him. Your greatest fault is that you associate my peity with those wahabbi people in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somalia, or Nigeria. You think that as a result of my faith, I want to kill Jews and Homosexuals. That is not true.
But, still, I cannot except you saying that anyone who doesn't adhere to Islam- including non-practicing Muslims- is going to hell. That is too simplistic, and may lead you to hell.
God in Islam rewards people for their deeds more than their beliefs, because he doesn't specifically say what he plans to do with ppl of other traditions.
I think the both of us got off to a bad start. My faith is what my parents raised me as. Christins and Jews are hated in North Nigeria but I do not share this haatred. As for LGBT, I think its totally OK if someine is Gay, Bi or Lesbian. But with the rise of radical islam in the north, homosexuality is punishable by death. I think that's just awfull. There is no shame in being LGBT. None at all. Its very diverse in this world after all.
chams did intermarriages with malay and adopt there customs and family organization, and many speak the Malay language, but right now its whats there now and what not.. cham is cham but u are still khmer soo dont say dat malay is still intermarrying.. u are on khmer land/border for many years now, are u still consider malay blood? maybe malay influenced or roots. and yes khmer did adopt india/china custom but we have our unique wayz-and had pass it on for years.
Let me reiterate myself. Cham = Cham. Malay = Malay. Khmer = Khmer. It's a very simple concept and I don't know why people are having a hard time seeing this equation? Here's the bigger picture. Austronesian = Cham, Malay, Filipinos, and various islanders throughout the pacific. We are a big family and that is why we have a language that shares many root words. Don't tell me who I'm not. I know my own identity. I speak Cham and its not Khmer.
u ever go to kelantan ,malaysia or pattani ,thailand...cham have same music style, dressing n culture..im from penang malaysia...cham are malay! since kerajaan Langkasuka....
But the fact is that since Chams live in Cambodia (as well as many other countries since Vietnam dispersed us), we do borrow Khmer words that we dont' have in the Cham language. It works the same way for those Chams living elsewhere (ie Chams in Thailand may use Thai words, Cham in Vietnam will use Viet words). Yes, my parents were born in Cambodia but a few generations ago that wasn't always so. My ancestors were born and raised in Panduranga, Champa when she existed centuries ago.
So what if Chams are a minority? They are a minority everywhere they go, even in our own motherland (central/south vietnam)! So that doesn't mean it nullifies everything that makes us who we are?? Thais related to Malay? LOL Thais came from southern China and stole Cambodian land. Yes Cambodia was very wealthy and powerful in the past with a rich history. Cham have a rich history as well, but because the fact that we are lesser known with fewer monuments, not a lot of scholars are interested.
Your economy is growing but Vietnam is also slowly possessing your resources. What Vietnam did to Champa they are doing to Cambodia. You won't see any changes yet (it took 1800 years for Vietnam to absorb Champa) but I guarantee you that Cambodia will become integrated with Vietnam. When that happens, lets see how your descendants will get over that fact that they lost their country. You don't know how our people feel, losing a country, because you still have one. I'll never get over it!
I think you shouldn't let these other Khmer members tell you who you are and such... I've researched into Cham history along with my parents telling me stories about the Cham people in Srok Khmer. They said that they were peaceful people, but they would stick together as of any other ethnic groups in South East Asia. I don't have a problem with Cham folks though, Cham folks were the ones who supported the Khmer soldiers on the borders, the Preah Vihear issue.
I don't know about the annexing thing though... all the things that have happened to Champa back in the days were... simple they were back in the days when there weren't many international laws and such. In today's world I don't think it would ever happen I mean look at Russia and Georgia ? How fast did that end with the invasion ? Many other countries too like Tibet and China it's never going to happen in today's world. Just be glad there's a province called Kampong Cham in Srok Khmer. =)
You're right about "international law" (or better put, One World Super Government Law), but things can always happen behind closed doors. The PM of Cambodia is a puppet gov with Hanoi holding its strings. For the liberation of Cambodia from KR hands, you guys had to cede Khmer Krom (Mekong Delta) to Vietnam and then they installed that puppet government. Well, we don't know whats going to happen but I do see a pattern fermenting with Vetnam-Kampuchia relationship that VN once had with Champa.
You must understand that Hun Sen is actually not that bad of a man... the least that Srok Khmer needs is peace... I mean look into Cambodia's history... look how bad the country had to suffer for so long ? Wars.. deception... the genocide of our own people... Khmer people don't need anymore scars of pain for the country... The best thing that Hun Sen has given to Khmer people is peace for many generations. Time will tell of what may happen, but honestly I HIGHLY DOUBT SO about the annexing.
The more you worry about things the more you feel more insecure about things... live life to the fullest as much as you can... there's nothing that most countries can do to turn back time... There will never be a day where Khmer people will fight back to reclaim Khmer Krom even though the Khmer Kahom said they tried lol. Just live life as it is... Cambodia has let many different ethnic groups live in our land without any hatred towards them unlike Vietnam or Thailand.
Like a SaiGonKidz. He just a kid. He doen't know how to comment. He must be taught to learn how to respect other people. TonleMekong i knew you are cham also. im also champa. Im very dissapointed because our culture has been influenced strongly in cambodia and vietname. If the vietname has not taken our country in that time.. sure we are all original cham without this dance!
To survive, the Champa peoples have to declare themself as Vietnamese or ran away from their country to another country. In another word, we're all over the world. Here are the list current population of chams took from WIKIPEDIA approximately 500,000 populations in the year 2008:
Cambodia -317,000 Vietnam-100,000 Malaysia-10,000 Thailand-4,000 United States-3,000 France-1,000 Saudi Arabia-100 Australia-undetermined Bangladesh-
We are a great race of people who was influenced mainland SouthEast Asia
Cham people did have a country known as KINGDOM OF CHAMPA that was in South East Asia. The country doesn't exist anymore because it was erased slowly by Vietname from the MAP due to civil war. In order to preventing the Champa peoples from recognize by the world, the Vietnam government have to mass murdering many Champa peoples as well as great leaders.
im correcting Sigap86. I agree if u said some of us (cham) is from Malay or Indonesia but originally we are not from Malay or Indonesia. I agree if you said that we are from Indonesia becuase indonesia is a very old nation that exist in asia. Our languge is similar to Malay. it has been proved that Malay language is adapted from cham language. We are cham and our tradition was influenced by other nation like cambodia and vietname. Champa is 95% all of them are muslim. continue...
This is very cool...are these the Chams in Cambodia or the ones in Vietnam? There are also Chams in China, on Hainan, but the Chinese classify them simply as Chinese Muslims.
SaiGonKiz, please don't embarass other Vietnamese ppl here! You know, the Cambodians are part of a localized Indian civilization, just like us Viets are a localized Chinese civ. We are neighbours with the Cambodians, and we must respect them!
modern day khmer is the result of interbreeding from all the ethnic groups who were under the rulership of kambuja.MANY ethnic groups inhabited southeast asia and they got absorbed by khmer in the process..
i know khmer is from a separate ethnic and language group BUT khmer and cham has been living in southeast asia way longer than the viet, thai and lao people.the first true khmer kingdom was chenla.funan was recorded in chinese archives to be a maritime state and obviously malay specialize in maritime trading..khmer absorbed all of southeast asia from present day thailand, laos, cambodia all the way down to the mekong delta.
i think genetically, khmers are more related to malay people..but linguistically its closer to vietnamese..khmer and malay coexisted with one another for a long time even before the arrival of tai speaking tribes and the viets.a lot of intermixing between the two people with funan and chenla..so modern khmers u can say is a mixture of khmer and malay population.
There is no relation in language or blood at all between Khmer and Malay. But yes Khmer and Vietnamese language is distantly related. Malay, Chams, Flips, and Indonesians all share the same language family and are literally ethnic blood cousins.
Are you sure about Khmer and Viet language being distantly related? I doubt it because obviously they don't sound alike and neither can understand the other. For a language to share some similarity don't they have had to have a similar origin?
im really ashamed and embarrassed by these ignorant AND stupid khmers who think theyre on top of the world speaking so grandly about khmer history and country while totally disrespecting and belittling the chams for absolutely no reason!!!!its when we lose an entire land like the chams is when we'll know how its like to be treated like shit.
I think this is the true Cham music, similar to Vietnamese folk songs in the Quang Binh, Danang, Quang Nam area, which I suspect they took from the Chams.
saigonkidz- part of vietnam under chinese rules 2000 years
part of vietnam under cambodia rules 2000 years
vietnam under france rules 200 years and still counting.
vietnam is the only southeast asian country that doesnt have there own syllabic alphabets, you guys have no history the french people took all of your history and still run vietnam.. the country who is going to be proserous in the next century is the ones who has history and culture..
Shut up you FOB (fresh off the boat), you're making English look bad and "sound so mess up for real". Seems like the only thing you know how to do is insult people with bad grammar. Go back to school, learn some South East Asian history, and then come back with a decent arguement of why Kampuchia was never rich. Thief.
So what do te chams consider them self as? khmers or viets? or does it depend on what country they live in. I think when cambodia becomes rich and powerful a lot of countrys are going to say they are khmer, just cuz we are a poverty country right now wait till it becomes rich.
i know of cham khmer and cham viet. they are proud to be cham regardless of where they are from. but i know for a fact they are proud to be of khmer citizenry too
The Cham kingdom dominated the area that is today southern Vietnam. They are related to the Mon-Khmer but in early modern times they converted to Islam- hence the similarity to Indo-malay traditions.
Cham people are not related to Khmers, although our royal families have intermarried on a few occasions in the past. We are linguisticly and ethnically related to Indonesians and Malaysians regardless of our religous preference.
cham is part of melayu! my mother r melayu champa in cambodia..i now in penang malaysia..there have alot of suku in melayu...like melayu kampar, banjar, kedah, kelantan, sarwak, palembang, riau, minangkabau, and also CHAMPA...learn history moron..champa people many in terengganu and kelantan ,malaysia...juz go visit them, then u will know!
Cambodia was a port of southeast asia for the first century, what was the fastest way of traveling? by boat or horse. when india, china and indo-malay was trading you can call cambodia the las vegas or china at this time. where ppl rested from a long journey or met for trading. It just makes sence to me how cambodia was rich at its time. khmer ppl adapt in both cultures cuz india and chinese were the biggest traders at its time in south east asia.
yes Cambodia was rich but it was through rice cultivation and agriculture, not based on maritime trade, like Champa. Chinese culture didn't influence Angkor though, strictly Indian.
omg vietnamese is so gay to me, its like oy loy em anh am, why dun you viet ppl admit yall are chinese, i remember this viet guy was like its viet new years, its really chinese new years retard
Cham is much more graceful and soothing to listen to out of the three. Khmer is a beautiful language as well. Vietnamese, well, it just sounds straight up rowdy and rude. Vietnamese language has got to be the most FOB language out there. From what you are saying, however, you do agree that Vietnamese sounds retarded, but you think that Khmer and Cham is more retarted than yours. You're an idiot.
Since you're a natural scholar and you have a PhD in linguistic studies, I want to believe you. But whether you like it or not, Vietnamese is part of the Mon-Khmer family, which is a sub category of the Austro-Asiatic language family.
The countries that were influenced by us Khmers were Thailand and Laos. Even though Vietnamses is a Mon-Khmer Language, their language sounds very Chinese. I think the only language that sounds like Khmer is Mon, from Burma.
To all my Khmer brothers that say the Chams were influenced by us, it's time for you to go study. The Chams and us Khmers were influenced by INDIANS. Their kings AND our kings shared the same VARMAN names. Kauthara is right about Khmer Architecture, it was influenced by Indonesia when Jayavarman II was exile there. And when he returned to Kampuchea, Deva Raja was introduced (ideology from Java).
Kauthara, i think cham people are nice and i respect them for keepin up with their roots. but i just dont like the way you talk bad about cambodia and khmers. forgive me. im sorry. truce betwwen us k. and fuck the gook saigonkidz
If you really read my comments I never talked negatively about Cambodia or Khmers. All I am saying is that someday Yuon is going to take over srok Khmer, thats why Khmer and Cham have to work together to get rid of our common enemy since they existed. All they want is our resources and land.
Thats part of it. Also because Chams took the Viets bribery. This caused disunity within the Cham chiefdoms and ultimately our failure to unite against a common enemy. If its one thing the Viets did right, it was divide and conquer.
I don't know who spit in your coffee, but Chams have integrated in Cambodia along with Khmer people. They dont have their own language or country. Flips and Indos have their own country, while Chams dont.
We have our own language, it's called Cham. We had a contry, its called Champa. We have our own script, its called Akhar Thrah. Stop thinking that Cham is a religion comprised of Cambodian Muslims. Quite frankly, anyone who thinks otherwise is just fuckin retarded.
are u mad cuz theres no champa and its now called Kampong Cham, "Cambodia." hahahaha! so yea, i guess we lost a lot of our land but u "champs" lost everything and it belongs to us. now ummm since u love vietnam so much a Ho "Cham" Minh" LOL. so yea just face it you guys are extinct. sorry man u brought this on yourself by talking negative about champa's father "cambodia". ZING! : D
oh and cambodia will never be absorbed by any country again. we are getting better by the day, pollitclly. and u should also be gratefull for that, asshole
What Vietnam did to Champa, they are doing the same thing in Cambodia. First off, you have a corruptive puppet government. Sa Huyn, that ex-khmer rouge commander put as Prime Minister by Vietnam after they "liberated" you guys from KR. Then, you have the Viets slowly colonize and take over the labor and resources of Cambodia. Same exact thing that happend to Champa.
Don't worry nothing will happen I'm sure Hun Sen will do something about it... Pol Pot attacked Vietnam for a reason and I'm sure Hun Sen isn't an idiot as you think he is... he maybe corrupted and all, but who knows maybe he's the one playing the Vietnamese government ? Who knows for sure what he is doing seriously. I'm only glad that Srok Khmer is at least recovering from what happened from the USA Bombings and the Khmer Rouge Regime.
I've studied a lot about Khmer history, culture, and Srok Khmer today. Yes Champa was the Khmer Empire's worst enemy and Champa did take over Angkor Wat for a bit and sacked it too. I'm not hating on any Cham people since I've never actually met one at all in my life, but if a Cham girl was that ignorant and didn't want to be with me because I'm not a muslim or whatsoever then that's just pure ignorance. I'm Khmer mixed with Teochew Chinese, but I will always remain as Khmer.
You will think that it will happen, but I'm sorry this isn't the year 1900-1970's anymore... no more territories will be conquered over anymore as of there are many international laws that will protect a country from ever getting taken over from and that's when the United Nations will come into play. It's almost the year 2008 soon and trust me no more lands will be annexed by anything anymore for a century like this as there are many international guardians now lol.
Of course we speak Khmer, its our second language. You and I both speak English right? That doesn't mean we're Britons. When you live in someone's else country you need to learn the language, especially when you're there for at least 400 years.
like i said b4 dere are few cham in vietnam now but most are lving in cambodia most speak malay-polynesian language and khmer and cham was influenced by khmer with different style khmer was influence by china and mainly india thats why khmer have its own unique style dat was influence by india such as thai was influence by cambodia!!!
im sorry for dissing ur culture like dat yes maybe i dont kno well but dere are only very few cham existed i didnt mean cham is part of a religion group. i mean chamm is like a ppl with indonesian/malay style islam group. its like muslim viet mix wif malaysian ppl. wat do u consider urself?? cham rite? ohh i never heard tell me about?? ohh soo u viet or khmer or malay i dont get it??
go to google and do researched they also have a video of khmer cham life in cambodia! but they speak khmer, i dont get it?? cham or khmer surin cham?? u decide! and this vid were made by khmer pplz soo plz dont describe this as a indonesian or thai vid. and its a cham dance with khmer origin!
Like I said, this is a Cham dance with HINDU origins. Khmer dances are HINDU in origin. So if we're copying anyone, its the Indians. Cham people speak both Khmer and Cham btw. And in Vietnam, Chams speak Viet and Cham, just depends where we are.
im wasting my time but newayz there are a few cham living on da border of vietnam mainly in cambodia its called kampong cham and cham was influenced by the khmer yall cham would not be existed anymore if yall never been accepted. and yes da cham are considering themselves as khmer now but different languages. go google it.
You're trippin. I'm Cham bro. I know my own people. We have many Cham communities in US, and we are very much different from Khmers over here. Throughout our history, Chams were influenced by Indian, Arab, and Malay cultures. Try googling Champa Towers and see our architecture. Compared to Angkor, we have our own style, besides, Angkor was influenced by the Sailendra kingdom, which was Indonesian. Both of our temples represent Mount Meru, and thats where the similarities end.
Even if your king did not accept us back in 1470, we would have still existed regardless. Don't act like our existence is solely dependant on your king's sympathy for our people. We could have just as easily settled in Malaysia or Indonesia as we did in Cambodia. The Southern Vietnamese were determined to wipe us out in South Vietnam but we still have communtities there today. We're survivors and will continue to exist, even if the Vietnamese absorbs whatever is left of Cambodia.
ay wtf u talkin that shit. "if the Vietnamese absorbs whatever is left". u stfu u fucker. cambodia was nice enough to give chams a home. if it wasnt for our genorosity then u all wouldve been ashes in a river. so u stfu and be grateful to khmers for we treat u all equally, unlike the minority chams in vietnam. ingnorant ass mofo
I'm not talking shit. I'm talking facts. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the Khmers. I'm very greatful for the home you have given to my people for the last half millenia. What I speak is truth when I say the Viets will eventually absorp Cambodia. I never said anything about us not being equal nor did I ever diss the Khmer. My girlfriend is Khmer and I love her. Maybe you should stfu and get learn some Champa 101.
also cham is a culture and theres 2 small muslim group in cambodia 1 is sunni and second is cham yes khmer is different but if they become muslim they can choose between cham or w.e muslim group. cuzz cham is another kind of muslim with malay/indo culture like clothes language e.t.c cham is nothing but another culture, not a ethnics! thats why there khmer cham! know ur info b4 u speak
Your categorizing Cham like its a religion. Cham is my ethnic and Islam is my religion. I speak my own language called Cham. Cham language is austronesian, a language-family that's spoken throughout the pacific. You can classify Chams as either Achense (Indonesian) or Malay. Even Tagalog shares similarities with Cham language. On the other hand, Khmers speak a language that is austroasiatic, which is spoken by many Highlanders and mountain people on mainland SouthEast Asia.
Have you ever been to a Cham village in Cambodia? Ask a Cham person what ethnic they are, they will tell you they are CHAM. As a matter of fact, I'm visiting Cambodia in two weeks. My relatives live in Kompong Chnang. BTW the majority of Cham practice Sunni branch of Islam. Theres no such thing called Cham that is a branch of Islam. Only a handful still pratice the old form of Islam (called Orusai) and Hinduism.
You're trying to tell that I'm something that I'm not. I know my own people better than you do. Many Khmer who has very little interactions with Chams misunderstand and know little about and us. There is a Khmer community here that lives side by side with us Chams. Besides the fact that we speak Cham, the distinction is very clear between the two communities.
dumb boy, cham got influenced on cambodia dickhead know ur history b4 u spit some nonsense dat dont even make sense... cham very close to india?? dat is soo stupid!
Chams influenced by Khmer? If anything, it is the other way around. Chams were the first to practice Hinduism, specifically Shavism, in SouthEast Asia. We've been pracicing Hinduism since the 4th century when Khmers started some centuries later. Chams AND Khmer are both close to India, but Khmers are closer.
Hmmm, reading ur comments and i'm agree with kauthara who said that cham is cham and khmer is khmer.. This is 2 differents ethnics groups. Lot of cham people live in Cambodia but they're still cham and not cambodians... Just dun be confused bout this.
yess but as u can see dere arent alot of cham so cham is now having interracial relation with khmer so wat u call dem?? khmer surin cham? i juss dont get it!
Majority of Chams do not intermarry with Khmer, theres only a few that do. If you really research Cham ppl in Cambodia, we only marry other Chams, Malays, or Indonesians - as long as they are Muslims. I can send you a research paper that says this. Just email me and I'll be more than happy to find it and send it to you. Cham is Cham, period. Some may be mixed, but we still keep our own language.
Oh hell no never none of that White god shit in Srok Khmer I'm glad the Khmer Rouge burnt down all those cathedrals in Srok Khmer and I'm serious about that too I'm really ANTI-GOD.
ThydaKhmer: Kampuchia did have a Khmer King who converted to Islam in the 1600s. He changed his name to Ibrahim. His love for a Cham/Malay women completed the conversion. However, rival Khmer Princes overthrew him so his reign wasn't that long. He didn't have enough support from the majority of the Buddhist population to implement any Islamic elements into the Kingdom.
Yo.. The viet stole Cham's land. Shame on them. Cham people are peacefule. They are not end up in Cambodia. You can see many cham mosques around Pnhome Pehn and national road 5. F*ck the viets. They are a bunch of chinese pirates and thieft.
They're not that peace, they try to take khmer land too back in the old day..there was many major battle between khmer and cham... well that what they get for trying to fight khmer..they end up having nothing.haha
drbun: We ARE peaceful people. There were many battles between Khmer and Cham because the Khmer Empire was expanding into Champa territories. You can't expect Chams to just sit there. It worked both ways, however, I'm not saying we weren't aggressive as well. Cham and Khmer are allies now and you better recognize that. I'm very sad that I don't have a country I can call my own but I can also be proud to say that Kampuchia is my second country next to Champa. Wa-Salaam.
Um, I don't know about all that but anyway just don't try to title Cham by itself. I prefer to them as Khmer-Cham, after all they are not part of Cambodian ethnic group. I mean, since "Cham" lived in Srok Khmer, born and raise, therefore I say they should just consider themself as Khmer-Cham and not just Cham. Anyway that's just my ideas.
drbun: What you 'prefer' is not ethnically correct. You contradicted yourself. You said "I prefer to them as Khmer-Cham...they are not part of Cambodian ethnic group." Exactly, we are not a Khmer ethnic group. Cham is Cham, Khmer is Khmer. Even though Cham were born in Kampuchia, we bleed Cham not Khmer. I'm Cham, born and raised in America. I don't call myself American-Cham. Cham is my ethnicity and American is my citizenship. Those are two different things so don't get it twisted.
Hum, i might have contradicted myself..Need to be more careful next time. "we bleed Cham not Khmer" what do you mean by bleed Cham? It's not clear, please explain.
drbun: Because Cham blood flows in our veins, not Khmer. We are two totally different ethnic groups. You guys are of Mon-Khmer stock and Chams fall under Malay stock. Cham speaks a language that belongs to the Austronesian language family and Khmer speaks a language that belongs to Austroasiatic language family.
yess i have da same idea.. cuzz dey should be called khmer surin cham..
first they were plain old cham until they lost everything den move to cambodia den cambodia had a interracial relation with cham and wat do u called dat?? there arent alot of cham no more just all mixed as u can see!
stole your mother fucker, shut the fuck up if you dont know history, fuck champa, they tried to attack DaiViet Kingdom 7 times and failed to be invaded by our Kingdom,Cham people are stupid and useless, fuck champa muslim terrorist.
Who are you replying too? Vietnamese stoled Champa lands, period. The Cham towers proved we've been in the are well before the Viets. Hue was a Cham city and Saigon was a Khmer city. Viets stoled them both. Cenral Vietnam ain't yours. The Mekong Delta ain't yours. Even today youre slowly spreading like rats into Cambodia and taking over the Khmer's resources. Check yourself.
i dont know what are you talking about..that time was a darkage,i admit champa was a powerful kingdom, thats why they wanted to expand their land and culture, they attacked Daiviet Kingdom so many times,so the only way Daiviet should had done: fight back! when you lost the battle you lost your kingdom it was obviously! we never say Cham people is Viet people,we only say Cham people is one of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam,we still respect your culture.
Obviously you dont know jack about Islam or the history of Champa. Theres a handful of ppl that make Islam look bad but thats not what our religion is all about. The majority of Muslims are peaceful ppl. We don't go around suicide bombing, thats condemned in the Qur'an. Do some research, come back, and debate properly without using profanity.
cham is originated from malaysia/indonesia but are from vietnam/Champa then move to cambodia because of the viet. another thing that cambodian accept the cham are because around 1660 the king of cambodia were islam.
Dude, if you don't know the history, just shut your dirty mouth. We never have any islam king in our Khmer dhistory. We accepted Cham and provide good shelter for the chams. The Vietnamese should pay great price for damaging champa's history.
Back in history, the ancient Kingdom of Butuan in Mindanao, Philippines had a close relationship with with the Kingdom of Cham (at that time, Classic Malay language was the lingua-franca of all Malay peoples throughout the Nusantara) and because of that, it is said many Butuanon also intermarried with the Cham.
If you check out these dances from Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia you'll see that the Cham are also Malay! so many similarities + a common ancestry!

this dance clearly shown that Cham and Malays have been influencing each other, especially after the arrival of Islam in the 10th Century.
zubinmohamad 1 year ago

Please forgive me if I was mistaken.
msoviet409 2 years ago
Cham of the old Champa kingdom were mostly Hindus. After Champa was annexed into Vietnam some Cham migrated southward / westward and became Muslims.
WuSuanSo 2 years ago
Yes Cham people are Muslim AND Hindu. In the past Islam was much more attractive to the general population whereas Hinduism was mostly associated with the Nobles and higher ups, probably to retain political/social power over the people. As for the dance, LOL, they aren't beating up on the women. Its actually a separate scene where they are riding their horse to the girl's destination. When they get there, they help cure her from the demons (in an earlier scene they made them sick)

Hahaha...yes, the Chams are Muslims. But they are not interested in Islamo-centric ghazis like you...they have their own culture and history, as well. Insha'allah.
LeHuyAnh 3 years ago
"Islamo Centric Ghaziz". What the bloody hell are you babbling about? You are either a muslim or you are not.
eviltreemonster 3 years ago
No, bin Laden. The world is not that simple...nor is the human experience that simple. People pick and choose what works for their own experiences. No Cham wants to be like you.
LeHuyAnh 3 years ago
What is this blasphemy? What is this filth? You CANNOT pick and choose what works best for you or do things your own way when its from the holy quran. You either follow the quran properly or you are a heretic destined for hellfire. It's as simple as that.
eviltreemonster 3 years ago

LeHuyAnh 3 years ago
I don't understand you. All this talk of islamo facism. Yes, where I'm from in North Nigeria, Osama Bin Laden is regarded as a hero but that doesn't mean that I support him. Your greatest fault is that you associate my peity with those wahabbi people in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somalia, or Nigeria. You think that as a result of my faith, I want to kill Jews and Homosexuals. That is not true.
eviltreemonster 3 years ago
I didn't say Jews...I know that Jews and Muslims are supposed to be friends, because they have political and social similarities.
I won't criticize you anymore, because since you are an African Muslim, your experiences and political culture is different.
LeHuyAnh 3 years ago
But, still, I cannot except you saying that anyone who doesn't adhere to Islam- including non-practicing Muslims- is going to hell. That is too simplistic, and may lead you to hell.
God in Islam rewards people for their deeds more than their beliefs, because he doesn't specifically say what he plans to do with ppl of other traditions.
LeHuyAnh 3 years ago
I think the both of us got off to a bad start. My faith is what my parents raised me as. Christins and Jews are hated in North Nigeria but I do not share this haatred. As for LGBT, I think its totally OK if someine is Gay, Bi or Lesbian. But with the rise of radical islam in the north, homosexuality is punishable by death. I think that's just awfull. There is no shame in being LGBT. None at all. Its very diverse in this world after all.
eviltreemonster 3 years ago

chams did intermarriages with malay and adopt there customs and family organization, and many speak the Malay language, but right now its whats there now and what not.. cham is cham but u are still khmer soo dont say dat malay is still intermarrying.. u are on khmer land/border for many years now, are u still consider malay blood? maybe malay influenced or roots. and yes khmer did adopt india/china custom but we have our unique wayz-and had pass it on for years.
WhoDatPhillyJawn 3 years ago

My ancestors were born and raised in Panduranga, Champa when she existed centuries ago.

yes vietnam/laos did came from china and took over lands

enough said, all i know is that yall should get over it!! da past is da past..
yes ur claiming ur chams but relize dat

WhoDatPhillyJawn 3 years ago
So what if Chams are a minority? They are a minority everywhere they go, even in our own motherland (central/south vietnam)! So that doesn't mean it nullifies everything that makes us who we are?? Thais related to Malay? LOL Thais came from southern China and stole Cambodian land. Yes Cambodia was very wealthy and powerful in the past with a rich history. Cham have a rich history as well, but because the fact that we are lesser known with fewer monuments, not a lot of scholars are interested.
Kauthara 3 years ago
Your economy is growing but Vietnam is also slowly possessing your resources. What Vietnam did to Champa they are doing to Cambodia. You won't see any changes yet (it took 1800 years for Vietnam to absorb Champa) but I guarantee you that Cambodia will become integrated with Vietnam. When that happens, lets see how your descendants will get over that fact that they lost their country. You don't know how our people feel, losing a country, because you still have one. I'll never get over it!
Kauthara 3 years ago
I think you shouldn't let these other Khmer members tell you who you are and such... I've researched into Cham history along with my parents telling me stories about the Cham people in Srok Khmer. They said that they were peaceful people, but they would stick together as of any other ethnic groups in South East Asia. I don't have a problem with Cham folks though, Cham folks were the ones who supported the Khmer soldiers on the borders, the Preah Vihear issue.
AsiaNETIK 3 years ago
I don't know about the annexing thing though... all the things that have happened to Champa back in the days were... simple they were back in the days when there weren't many international laws and such. In today's world I don't think it would ever happen I mean look at Russia and Georgia ? How fast did that end with the invasion ? Many other countries too like Tibet and China it's never going to happen in today's world. Just be glad there's a province called Kampong Cham in Srok Khmer. =)
AsiaNETIK 3 years ago
You're right about "international law" (or better put, One World Super Government Law), but things can always happen behind closed doors. The PM of Cambodia is a puppet gov with Hanoi holding its strings. For the liberation of Cambodia from KR hands, you guys had to cede Khmer Krom (Mekong Delta) to Vietnam and then they installed that puppet government. Well, we don't know whats going to happen but I do see a pattern fermenting with Vetnam-Kampuchia relationship that VN once had with Champa.
Kauthara 3 years ago
You must understand that Hun Sen is actually not that bad of a man... the least that Srok Khmer needs is peace... I mean look into Cambodia's history... look how bad the country had to suffer for so long ? Wars.. deception... the genocide of our own people... Khmer people don't need anymore scars of pain for the country... The best thing that Hun Sen has given to Khmer people is peace for many generations. Time will tell of what may happen, but honestly I HIGHLY DOUBT SO about the annexing.
AsiaNETIK 3 years ago
The more you worry about things the more you feel more insecure about things... live life to the fullest as much as you can... there's nothing that most countries can do to turn back time... There will never be a day where Khmer people will fight back to reclaim Khmer Krom even though the Khmer Kahom said they tried lol. Just live life as it is... Cambodia has let many different ethnic groups live in our land without any hatred towards them unlike Vietnam or Thailand.

Cham people did have a country known as KINGDOM OF CHAMPA that was in South East Asia. The country doesn't exist anymore because it was erased slowly by Vietname from the MAP due to civil war. modern day khmer is the result of interbreeding from all the ethnic groups who were under the rulership of kambuja.MANY ethnic groups inhabited southeast asia and they got absorbed by khmer in the process..
TonleMekong 3 years ago
i know khmer is from a separate ethnic and language group BUT khmer and cham has been living in southeast asia way longer than the viet, thai and lao people.the first true khmer kingdom was chenla.funan was recorded in chinese archives to be a maritime state and obviously malay specialize in maritime trading..khmer absorbed all of southeast asia from present day thailand, laos, cambodia all the way down to the mekong delta.

i think genetically, khmers are more related to malay people..but linguistically its closer to vietnamese..khmer and malay coexisted with one another for a long time even before the arrival of tai speaking tribes and the viets.a lot of intermixing between the two people with funan and chenla..so modern khmers u can say is a mixture of khmer and malay population.
TonleMekong 3 years ago
There is no relation in language or blood at all between Khmer and Malay. But yes Khmer and Vietnamese language is distantly related. Malay, Chams, Flips, and Indonesians all share the same language family and are literally ethnic blood cousins.
Kauthara 3 years ago
Are you sure about Khmer and Viet language being distantly related? I doubt it because obviously they don't sound alike and neither can understand the other. For a language to share some similarity don't they have had to have a similar origin?

Cambodia was a port of southeast asia for the first century, what was the fastest way of traveling? by boat or horse. when india, china and indo-malay was trading you can call cambodia the las vegas or china at this time. where ppl rested from a long journey or met for trading. It just makes sence to me how cambodia was rich at its time. khmer ppl adapt in both cultures cuz india and chinese were the biggest traders at its time in south east asia.

AsiaNETIK 4 years ago
You will think that it will happen, but I'm sorry this isn't the year 1900-1970's anymore... no more territories will be conquered over anymore as of there are many international laws that will protect a country from ever getting taken over from and that's when the United Nations will come into play. It's almost the year 2008 soon and trust me no more lands will be annexed by anything anymore for a century like this as there are many international guardians now lol.

ohh yea they speak khmer in this one and this is mixed with khmer soo dere u go!!!
WhoDatPhillyJawn 4 years ago
Of course we speak Khmer, its our second language. You and I both speak English right? That doesn't mean we're Britons. When you live in someone's else country you need to learn the language, especially when you're there for at least 400 years.

WhoDatPhillyJawn 4 years ago
Like I said, this is a Cham dance with HINDU origins. Khmer dances are HINDU in origin. So if we're copying anyone, its the Indians. Cham people speak both Khmer and Cham btw. And in Vietnam, Chams speak Viet and Cham, just depends where we are.
Kauthara 4 years ago
im wasting my time but newayz there are a few cham living on da border of vietnam mainly in cambodia its called kampong cham and cham was influenced by the khmer yall cham would not be existed anymore if yall never been accepted. and yes da cham are considering themselves as khmer now but different languages. go google it.

Kauthara 4 years ago
ay wtf u talkin that shit. "if the Vietnamese absorbs whatever is left". u stfu u fucker. cambodia was nice enough to give chams a home. if it wasnt for our genorosity then u all wouldve been ashes in a river. so u stfu and be grateful to khmers for we treat u all equally, unlike the minority chams in vietnam. ingnorant ass mofo
kilg123456 4 years ago

WhoDatPhillyJawn 4 years ago
Your categorizing Cham like its a religion. Cham is my ethnic and Islam is my religion. I speak my own language called Cham. Cham language is austronesian, a language-family that's spoken throughout the pacific. You can classify Chams as either Achense (Indonesian) or Malay. Even Tagalog shares similarities with Cham language. On the other hand, Khmers speak a language that is austroasiatic, which is spoken by many Highlanders and mountain people on mainland SouthEast Asia.
Kauthara 4 years ago
Have you ever been to a Cham village in Cambodia? Ask a Cham person what ethnic they are, they will tell you they are CHAM. As a matter of fact, I'm visiting Cambodia in two weeks. My relatives live in Kompong Chnang. BTW the majority of Cham practice Sunni branch of Islam. Theres no such thing called Cham that is a branch of Islam. Only a handful still pratice the old form of Islam (called Orusai) and Hinduism.
Kauthara 4 years ago
You're trying to tell that I'm something that I'm not. I know my own people better than you do. Many Khmer who has very little interactions with Chams misunderstand and know little about and us. There is a Khmer community here that lives side by side with us Chams. Besides the fact that we speak Cham, the distinction is very clear between the two communities.

p.s. these are khmer pplz playing as chams to entertain khmer and show dat their exist in our country so fall bacc!

Umm yeah of course we exist in your country. I never argued that with you. Theres a province named after us afterall, Kompong Cham.

khmer and Cham are 2 different...the Cham very close to India people...
Laozung 4 years ago
dumb boy, cham got influenced on cambodia dickhead know ur history b4 u spit some nonsense dat dont even make sense... cham very close to india?? dat is soo stupid!
WhoDatPhillyJawn 4 years ago
Chams influenced by Khmer? If anything, it is the other way around. Chams were the first to practice Hinduism, specifically Shavism, in SouthEast Asia. We've been pracicing Hinduism since the 4th century when Khmers started some centuries later. Chams AND Khmer are both close to India, but Khmers are closer.
Kauthara 4 years ago
Hmmm, reading ur comments and i'm agree with kauthara who said that cham is cham and khmer is khmer.. This is 2 differents ethnics groups. Lot of cham people live in Cambodia but they're still cham and not cambodians... Just dun be confused bout this.
palina 4 years ago
yess but as u can see dere arent alot of cham so cham is now having interracial relation with khmer so wat u call dem?? khmer surin cham? i juss dont get it!
WhoDatPhillyJawn 4 years ago
Majority of Chams do not intermarry with Khmer, theres only a few that do. If you really research Cham ppl in Cambodia, we only marry other Chams, Malays, or Indonesians - as long as they are Muslims. I can send you a research paper that says this. Just email me and I'll be more than happy to find it and send it to you. Cham is Cham, period. Some may be mixed, but we still keep our own language.

Kauthara 4 years ago
I'm glade we didn't convert because that would sad...

Yo.. The viet stole Cham's land. Shame on them. Cham people are peacefule. They are not end up in Cambodia. You can see many cham mosques around Pnhome Pehn and national road 5. F*ck the viets. They are a bunch of chinese pirates and thieft.
iluJr 4 years ago
They're not that peace, they try to take khmer land too back in the old day..there was many major battle between khmer and cham... well that what they get for trying to fight khmer..they end up having nothing.haha
drbun 4 years ago
drbun: We ARE peaceful people. Wa-Salaam.
Kauthara 4 years ago
Um, I don't know about all that but anyway just don't try to title Cham by itself. I prefer to them as Khmer-Cham, after all they are not part of Cambodian ethnic group. I mean, since "Cham" lived in Srok Khmer, born and raise, therefore I say they should just consider themself as Khmer-Cham and not just Cham. Anyway that's just my ideas.
drbun 4 years ago
Sorry, correction "after all they are not part of Cambodian ethnic group" they are part.:)
drbun 4 years ago
drbun: What you 'prefer' is not ethnically correct.
Kauthara 4 years ago
Hum, i might have contradicted myself..Need to be more careful next time. "we bleed Cham not Khmer" what do you mean by bleed Cham? It's not clear, please explain.
drbun 4 years ago
drbun: Because Cham blood flows in our veins, not Khmer. We are two totally different ethnic groups. You guys are of Mon-Khmer stock and Chams fall under Malay stock. Cham speaks a language that belongs to the Austronesian language family and Khmer speaks a language that belongs to Austroasiatic language family.
Kauthara 4 years ago
yess i have da same idea.. cuzz dey should be called khmer surin cham..
first they were plain old cham until they lost everything den move to cambodia den cambodia had a interracial relation with cham and wat do u called dat?? there arent alot of cham no more just all mixed as u can see!

stole your mother fucker, shut the fuck up if you dont know history, fuck champa, they tried to attack DaiViet Kingdom 7 times and failed to be invaded by our Kingdom,Cham people are stupid and useless, fuck champa muslim terrorist.
canadabuon 4 years ago
Who are you replying too? Vietnamese stoled Champa lands, period. The Cham towers proved we've been in the are well before the Viets. Hue was a Cham city and Saigon was a Khmer city. Viets stoled them both. Cenral Vietnam ain't yours. The Mekong Delta ain't yours. Even today youre slowly spreading like rats into Cambodia and taking over the Khmer's resources. Check yourself.
Kauthara 4 years ago
i dont know what are you talking about..that time was a darkage,i admit champa was a powerful kingdom, thats why they wanted to expand their land and culture, they attacked Daiviet Kingdom so many times,so the only way Daiviet should had done: fight back! when you lost the battle you lost your kingdom it was obviously! we never say Cham people is Viet people,we only say Cham people is one of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam,we still respect your culture.
canadabuon 4 years ago
Obviously you dont know jack about Islam or the history of Champa. Theres a handful of ppl that make Islam look bad but thats not what our religion is all about. The majority of Muslims are peaceful ppl. We don't go around suicide bombing, thats condemned in the Qur'an. Do some research, come back, and debate properly without using profanity.
Kauthara 4 years ago
cham is originated from malaysia/indonesia but are from vietnam/Champa then move to cambodia because of the viet. another thing that cambodian accept the cham are because around 1660 the king of cambodia were islam.
hatedbymany215bixtch 4 years ago

This song is in Cham language, a form of Malay language...
I can understand some of the words which is same in pronounciation with Malay..
Their dress are similar to Malaysian/Indonesian traditional dress style...
Many Malaysian/Indonesian believed that Cham peoples are originally came from both Malaysia & Indonesia..
Cham peoples are also considered as Malays...
