What is it Carson says at the end.."I get 7 mins. out of you, I take a ??? and go home to Malibu". Sounds like he's saying something like "I take a bono? and go home to Malibu. My late Mom grew up with him down the street in tiny Norfolk, Nebr. She said he was exactly like he is now on t.v. But she also said he was kind of a loner...He probably lived inside his mind quite a bit...and poss. knew much bigger things were to come later.
@shaktimaan09 Ahhh, yeah, that makes since. Probably.."I make a bundle and go home to Malibu." You know, I'm still not convinced that this whole take was just a pre---planned "bit". My guess is that it probably is...but as I remember...Grodin was kind of a jerk with other hosts around that time. Just sort of "testy". What do you think...was this just a gag dreamed up by these two....or were we simply seeing two pros at work here without anything really cooked up between 'em?
@TomBBrady12 you're absolutely right, but sadly most people here don't even get it now. they'd buy anything face value without any reflection (cos reflection requires knowledge and intelligence) - and that's why advertisers love them and they're the perfect audience for the tonight show. based on ratings, "they" = vast majority of americans.
Yes Grodin is onto him but he is just stating the obvious: talk show hosts in general don't really care what guests have to say. And Carson freely admits it. Carson seems to be the one who is in control Grodin is his usual whining, begging for sympathy self I like both of them, by the way, I just thought Carson had the edge in this segment.
@darius595 Sadly, Letterman and Leno and all those loser talk show hosts don't care about what their guests have to say these days. What a shame, huh?
Dear people complaining about commercials, download firefox and its adblocker plugin. I haven't seen an ad for months. It only takes 5 minutes not including the download time so it's not a very hard and it will save you the time of having to watch those ads. Firefox is a great browser anyway.
@darius595 Disagree. If you look closely and listen to what Grodin is saying, it becomes clear Carson is not the master here. Grodin is onto him. Genius.
@psyjpg He was hilarious on David Letterman last year as his appearance in a new movie (well old now) in 2007. Look up Charles Grodin David Letterman 2007 part 2. His last comment about Letterman's hair gets a huge laugh.

@WickedTornado Considering the number of times Grodin was on the show (at least 10), always in the same character, I'd say it was a setup.

Grodin and Carson played the audience. They were good friends, but made it seem like they were adversaries. Classic stuff. Funny stuff.

@darius595 Conan definitely does care what his guests have to say. You don't really know anything about television.

@darius595 You can't host a talk show without caring what the guests have to say.
