Northern Italians were already very white to begin with, and then came the Celts to settle in our lands. Southern Italians have been mixed with greeks, spanish and turks.

One thing I always say to people who ask me whats the difference between northern and southern italians is 'Think of the difference between a Scandinavian and an Egyptian", which is actually a fairly accurate compare.

I'm a blonde northern Italian and my skin is very fair, and I look (and am) drastically different from southern Italians, although many of them are friends of mine, regardless.

I also know that yes, THERE ARE many white Italians in southern Italy, I NEVER denied that, but the majority of them aren't.

There was a generally shared racism towards Italians, regardless of their origins. You were definitely more primitive compared to the populations that inhabited the South of Italy, that's for sure. Starting from the Greeks, passing through the Saracens and the Normans (Sicily), the South of Italy has been a hotbed of civilization. You had to wait for the Renaissance to see that in the North of Italy.
