There's a PC game called The dark mirror. And the deaths aren't that frequent. Mostly traps. But they are fucking creepy and weird. Like in one part you are inside a cave and there are holes in the wall, so you need a key and it's in one of those holes, so I looked in the wrong hole and bam! a huge iron spike went trough the guys eye and poped trough the back of his head, his legs gave out and it just hanged from his head on the wall lol I was OHHH SHIIIIIIIT! I wasn't expecting it...

Not the creepiest ever, but definitely the creepiest in the Kirby series. And as to why they always explode in video games, it's for a couple of reasons. One, explosions are awesome and epic, and two, because it gives the player a sense of closure, a sense of "No, he's really dead this time. Didn't you see him explode into nothingness just now? You don't come back from that." Also, it's just really satisfying to see the bad guy totally annihilated like that.
