  • JJ wrote some great songs but can't sing for shit!

  • wonder why his version didnt become popular...

  • the drummer is an oompa loompa

  • jj is the inspiration of both knopfler and clapton, most songs they sing are from his hand :)

  • "JJ Cale doing Cocaine on Jools Holland" lol sounds bad when you put it that way

  • Hahahaaaaa, Jools :D

  • I thank God for JJ Cale. Without JJ Cale, Clapton and Knoplfer wouldn't have been as cool.

  • @creakystair he s working as a handy man lol

  • awesome but Clapton's voice rules moar :)

  • de piano bridge is the shit!

  • heh dobry jesteś koleś ale nie tak dobry jak eric clapton pozdro:)

  • first time i heard jj.cale when i was 16 was riding into the sky, am 56 now and still he got me moving on...

  • Bakersfield guitar at its finest..... :)

    .

  • is it me or is jj cale permanantly annoyed in this video?

  • @bobbybland100

Perhaps he needs a sax player?

  • @bobbybland100 nah man, he's just got that squinty expression

  • Love the description man - "JJ Cale doing cocaine on Jools Holland"

  • the piano solo reminds me of mario

  • Fantastic absolutely flawless, singers nowadays can't get this accurate, they sing out of time in live performances by 1 tenth of a second. Better than any cover.

  • great solo on the piano

  • Clapton & Cale - The Best Duo in life

  • nine people have never done cocaine

  • J.J Cale is the coolest hipster in the universe

  • why does it only show my views?

  • the 8 dislikes is for the stupid english idiot at the start

  • @skullsmasher01 hey! he's a legend :(

  • @olibooty .... he looks and sounds like an jdiot

  • @skullsmasher01 well yeah, but he's still a legend :P

  • hahaha bob de bouwer on drums

  • HAHAHA WILL FARREL :D

  • You 'd like to play as Laid back as him?? You can't bro. You must be born in tulsa ....

  • Am i the only person that preferes Clapton's cover? I mean seriously. Jools was amazing though (:

  • @Cushniee Check out Cale's original studio version. Great, funky groove to it. Much better than Clapton's version.

  • @fretbuzz59 much worste... Horrible song

  • Holy shit, George W. Bush on the drums! Get the evil out of this!

  • way smoother and cooler than the clapton-way

  • @BallerBubi Its like they are two different songs.

  • as marky smith said " I'll play s long as that fanny doesn't play his boogie woogie shite" prosecution rests

  • Gee how old is this clip, Jools looks really young in this ?

  • @strongarmy1000 Keep your spam to yourself you guys suck

  • is this the ´sprechgesang´ version...?

  • JJ Cale RULES. He wrote cocaine & Clapton considers him a genius.

  • @sweetcatarina Thanks for the info....I have always deeply admired JJ's music but did not know that he wrote this huge hit!

    Thanks again,

    Bridgette

  • Cocaine nur mit J.J.Cale

  • Awesome !

  • Enorme JJ...

  • JJ <33333 Amazing

  • Yes, I totally hear the influence he had on Knopfler ... must be why I've grown to enjoy JJ's music so much!

  • Claptons version is better

  • You can't beat that! Long live Mr. Cale.

  • Who's bringing up John Mayer on a fucking JJ Cale video? John has some serious chops but his boyish mediocre 2000's pop vocals ruin any chance of him of being serious contender. Comparing him to JJ Cale is like comparing a Chevy Aveo to a Ford GT. Long live JJ Cale

  • megga

  • Why isn't this guy one of the most famous people in America?

  • Im a fan of both versions. I started off listening to the Clapton version but now have gone to the JJ Cale. I always prefer the originals

  • aint it sad tht with the exception of jeff beck and a few others, all the best guitarist are old and dyin, any good young guitarist these days is into heavy metal and shit, the world has lost it soul and sadly one day, the amazing guitarist like jj and clapton will be no more and there will be no one tu replace them:(

  • @shaunjcw Ever heard of Joe Satriani?

  • @guitarconasor i said jeff beck and a few others besides hes not that young, hes gettin old, i think hes late 30s early 40s now or itleast looks it so hes not that young

  • @shaunjcw have a listen to john mayer buddy

  • oh how I hate cocaine . never again ! the song is great though

  • It's not the point of which version is better. The point is that if it wasn't for JJ Cale, we would've never heard this song. FINAL.

  • does anyone hear the influence jj must have had on mark knofler?dire straits?

  • Brilliant. So superior. This guy must feel like Ry Cooder with so many "greats" standing on his (their) shoulder.

    This is Art.

  • i was named after this bad ass

    no joke

    -cale

  • @deadCHURCH12 wow! that does kick ass.

  • Never heard this version before... It's amazing. It is much better than Clapton's. JJ Cale is awesome, thanks for the video. I've got to go download everything Cale now.

  • Cale is truly a rare gift. A master writer & musician

  • this old punk is the a rock legend and one of the best musicians of 20th century for sure:) I think Knopfler was influenced by Cale according to how they both play guitar with fingers. What do you think?

  • @Rishon1981 You got that right. Knopfler stated Cale was a huge influence. The first time I heard Sultans I swaer I thought it was JJ hisself.

  • @zapkvr JJ is one of a relatively small family of originals. The sound owes a lot to him. He also helped put a lot of household names on the list and influenced most who came along since the late '50s. . Even Clapton came over and went to the Church with him awhile. Few people have any idea of his imact on music.

  • whatever about that, check out the drummer's dodgy dungarees at 0:37

  • Can you imagine how great could be version with Eric and J.J on one stage...

  • so george bush found something to do after being president of the U.S. ... nice. he's doing cocaine!

  • @ferrd69 wow! well played! you struck comedy gold, young fellow.

  • Realize people; no Cale would mean no Clapton, would mean no John Mayer etc - so either you like or understand this great artist - go on and listen to what ever moves YOU and one day you might realize what this guy brought to the table !

  • MY VERSION IS BETTER ! ahaha just kidding ! :-)

  • With all due respect JJ is not in it for Guitar Hero, that is the style he originated the Tulsa Blues style. Laid back thumb picking. He wrote this an After Midnight, and many others that were covered. The man has talent, appreciate it

  • delicious music,thanks.................

  • Oh, I like J.J. Cale's music but Eric Clapton ist the best guitar player ever and his version is way better.

  • JJ Cale is one of the best and most creative songwriters and singers ever...its been a long strange trip..check out his 2006 albym that he allowed Clapton to play and sing on.....along with Billy Preston .........Road To Escondido. But you cant beat the original stuff.

  • The guy's Fuckin brilliant!

Looks as if he was the devil child of Keith Richards and David Essex but

  • clapton has always been a kale tribute artist

  • I like this video, but at the same time it does not have the correct video-material when he plays the solo.

  • Cale is a great blues man, but to compare him to Clapton as a guitar player is just plain rediculous.

  • Thank you for posting.

JJ Cale Rules !! Anytime Always !

  • Comment removed

  • He's truly great and he does have a touch of those hard cocaine eyes.

  • love it !!!!!!!!!

  • sounds like mark knopler lol! good tune thanks!

  • What is this??? The description says "JJ Cale doing Cocaine on Jools Holland"

    He isn't doing any cocaine!

  • Casio Midi guitar!

  • JJ is telling the truth, from the heart .

    brilliant

  • this is the true lyrics of a man who wrote this song aswell after midnight he actually wrote these songs you dunb fucks

  • Holy shit, Will Farrel on the drums!!!!

  • @jordy2332

you have to look and the drummer of red hot chilli pepper (yes, i listen to jj cale and rhcp), he looks like will farrel!

  • Oh, wow, that Holland playing the piano. Loved it. I didn't go through all the comments, but people do realize, right, that Cale wrote this song, along with After Midnight and many others. He and Clapton are close friends and did an album together a couple years ago. And Cale lives in Escondido last I heard.

  • não existem palavras para descrever o quanto é maravilhoso poder ouvir e sentir a musica do grande j.j. cale!!!!!!!!!

  • hm dont like what this piano man is doing to the song .....

  • I love this rendition better than his original album. Clapton took this song and evolved it into his style. I love Clapton's version, but I keep coming back to this. It's the only way you can get back. Cocaine.

  • I love this version of the song, it's classic. And I can't remember the last time I saw a musician wearing bib overalls with shirt and tie.

  • If i had a hundredth of his talent i would be the happiest person alive.

  • JJ Cale is unique and a good songwriter. His debut album "Naturally" from 1971 is one of the ten best albums ever. There isn't any Clapton is better or JJ is better, they are just different. Check out "Crazy Mama" (studio) version on here and you can appreciate the best comment I've read yet. "Man, JJ Cale is so laid back he's horizontal, love everything he ever did." by Jupitersgoose. That kinda says it all. To say Clapton's no good is pure ignorance, he is one of the best.

  • I find it amusing and kinda sad this back & forth about Clapton and JJ Cale. If you know anything about JJ Cale you would know that he is indeed a gifted and unique singer songwriter that just has always had a real aversion to being in the spotlight. He does not like to be the 'main attraction' or star nor does he care for extensive touring and/ or recording. He is quite content to be who he is and have others like Clapton (they are friends) record his songs.

  • He is the god of Blue Grass! Tha man who Clapton Called tha Masta!

Aint no body in hwite blues greater than him!

Clapton is who he is, b cus of teh man!

    Worship Cale, love clapton!

    God bless white blues genius!

  • There are only two kinds of musicians in the world - those who've got it and those who haven't. The first group is enormous - the second relatively small. This guy used to belong to the latter group but now he's moved on and is in a class of his own.

  • HELLO EVERYONE

The metal militia will be attacking Justin Bieber's video (justin bieber baby ft. ludacris) on the FOURTH OF JULY! Assemble all fans of good music in every genre! (Jazz, Metal, Classical, Classic Rock etc.) On said date leave a comment giving your thoughts on JB, close the comment with -MM. Copy and paste this comment to all the good band videos! (Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, led zeppelin, black sabbath, classical and jazz composers etc) Thumbs up this comment

  • Clapton is great, but it's a little weird that he's like one of the most famous musicians in the world and hardly anyone know's Cale, even though Clapton got big partly from Cale's material. Almost like the rap sampling James Brown thing.

  • @RikJamezBich

Um, Cale's songs had nothing to do with Clapton getting "big." Are you forgetting The Yardbyrds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. All these bands were before he ever recorded Cale's songs. While I love JJ, I think your comment was uninformed.

  • @jswhitler I can tell you're a fan of Clapton, but he did popularize Cocaine, Traveling Light & After Midnight which were all Cale's songs. Nothing wrong with covering someone else's stuff, but why was it such a secret. I never hear Cale on the radio or even mention that he wrote those songs. I prefer Cream for Clapton. I do like that song "I can't Stand it" by Eric though, Cool song.

  • @jswhitler solo clapton would sound much different had Cale never existed. Get real.

  • It's really not that hard. JJ Cale is a brilliant rock songwriter (very underrated) and Eric Clapton is a brilliant rock guitarist and performer (very well rated). When you write the song you can perform it however you please, look at how Bob Dylan performs his songs.

  • J.J.does a good job of telling it how it is COCAINE

  • Cale did a better version both live and studio. Clapton? Puhhhlease. Clapton has been doing more covers that a manhole lid casting factory, and most range from mediocre to darn great, but most are in the first category. Cale freaking rules. Clapton is well Clapton. I love both of these guys. Only Les Paul and The Ventures did more covers than Clapton. Of the three Clapton is running in third place,... sorry.

  • At his best J J Cale was the coolest, most laid back singer I ever heard. This performance is still good but he has lost his voice now - it just just doesn't float over the backing like it used to.

Listen to 'J.J. Cale - Crazy Mama (Studio)' posted around here and hear his original voice.

  • @tphillips68 jus noticed your comment on this vid and you are absolutely rediculous. Do peoples opinions about a particular song need to informed or educated. Music us more pure than U give it credit for and should be ashamed of yourself for talking down to kids about thier personal opinions. JJ Cale would simply spat in your face. . lol even tho you do like his original version better.

  • @gabroder Indecipherable!

  • she don't lie...........please Mr. Clapton. Pay JJ and tell every him to always say 'shit don't lie'

  • Clapton's version is hot, but this is so darn cool... thanks for posting.

  • al parecer si hay alguien que toca la viola ( guitarra) en este planeta es tipo es uno de ellos . sin lugar a dudas . solamente : maestro .

  • always the cool guy at a party.....JJ Cale

  • hehehehe the drummer is wearing bibs

  • YES.....super clip.....

  • Man, how cool and relaxed he is! I,m a little stoned right now and man it JAMS This rocks :-)

  • STONED on JJ CaLe

My BLUES Man iS.... JJ#MaN !

    LOVE iT !!!

  • Cocaine is awesome. Use, don't abuse.

  • perfect sense of rythm and management of improvisation.

  • @kamvysis Yes,righr words !!

althoug I first listened to this song several times in the Eric Clapton version ( Slowhand Album,Live at Budokan 1979 and Live in different places and years )., now I think J.J. Cale original version is better of Clapton.Someone says that cale solo is poor, maybe but He doesn't need to play many notes. He plays the right notes and also his voice is better 'cause is more relaxed and He is a real american voice instead of Clapton and this is Tulsa sound.

  • @blualberto1966 Thank You very much for your replay... I was inspired from your.."..perfect sense of rythm and management of improvisation.."

I was in Clapton Lucca concert in 2006 ( Summer Festival ), about 4 kilometres from my home and Florence concert, 30th, january 1987 !!!

Perhaps, some day,in the future J.J.Cale will be in Tuscany...

  • jj cale >>>> clapton

  • Jo, too much cocaine!!!

  • Clapton is overrated - JJ rocks.

  • I prefer clapton playing but thankyou JJ for writing this great song

  • loving the drummers suspenders, jj cales smooth-as-you-like call to jools to "tickle the ivories" and then followed by his own plectrumless solo. absolutely sublime. his subtle vocal is spot on. amazing.

  • Anyone commenting that Clapton's version is better or Cale's version is ...this or that....shut the fuck up. your opinions are wrong.

this entire thread reeks of uninformed opinions, kids and dipshits. a few of you get it. thank you.

  • @tphillips68 like what you say mate

  • @tphillips68 i really prefer this version much better ... !

  • @tphillips68 I personally enjoy Clapton's version more. I just think it has a more raw, rocky feel, but that's a subjective, personal opinion, that's no reason to be derogatory to people :P

  • @Doog0AD you fall into the "kids" category. not to mention the "whiney bitch category." reduce the soy in your diet, please.

  • @tphillips68 You're arguably the worst troll I've ever seen, no offense.

  • @Doog0AD , none taken, youngster! I do believe I've hit a nerve.

  • @tphillips68 Taste is personal?

  • @sebasredspecialfan shouldn't you be playing video games?

  • @tphillips68 Who died and made you the last word on which version is better? Clapton's is the better version. Opinions are like rectal openings, and everyone has one. Instead of doing a line, take a Valium. Idiot.

  • @falcon2160 bless your heart!

  • @tphillips68 Ha ha perfectly put! Rarely have I read such a prosaic yet wastedly poetic critique. You are more then correct and I have voted you up one. Top marks my dear sir!

  • @Acrelad thanks! not to kiss your ass, but I love john renbourn! the best thing I play on the guitar is a short instrumental based on his guitar part to Pentangles, The Trees They do Grow High.

  • @tphillips68 Ah well you got that right. I love Clapton's version but it is SHIT compared to Cale's. Honestly, there is just no comparison.

  • @zapkvr Really!:) Yes it's vivedly seen how Cale uses his first finger, Knopfler uses it the same way! Thank you for reply, my friend! You know, I am listening to this song since I posted my comment:) amazing:) this riff is awsome! I have almost all the albums of JJ Cale after the friend of father gave the disk with his songs. I love it, I love a lot of that kind of music and JJ Cale especially. You are right, the have a lot of in common, and the sound of guitar and the was to play solo.

  • @tphillips68 our opinions are wrong? dude they are opinions its what you as a individual, and a jj.cale fan wouldnt be judging people and telling whats right and wrong. you sir are asshole just for thinking other peoples opinions are wrong

  • @mtldrmr oh, I'm sorry. did you trip and stub your c!it?

  • @tphillips68 Eric Clapton version is clearly bette. That doesn´t mean this one is ok.But please, recognize the difference. If not, fuck off you idiotttttttttttt!!!

    I said with respect.

  • @tphillips68 Who made it ok for you to tell anyone their opinion is wrong? If someone doesn't like this version, and likes Claptons better or vice-versa, it's their opinion to have and there isn't anything you can do about it. In short, get over it.

  • @tphillips68 jj cale's version has changed through the years,he's played it everyway possible, the original relaese is pure class,as is after midnight which clapton also covered.

  • I like the Clapton version better.

  • _:_:_:cocaine:;:_:_:_:_:_.-.

    JJ Cale N° 1

  • eric clapton called jj cale god....honest

  • was that Craig Ferguson as Prince Charles?

  • Man, that's such a great sound. I have to get some of his work!!!

  • he reminds me of a cross between bob dylan and keith richards....

  • He does look like that.

  • @jeffs241 YES!!! ABSOLUTELY!! plus throw in a bit of Harry Dean Stanton...

  • @jeffs241 yup

  • best drug i ever did

  • which one was the worst? I'm serious

  • Having heard many versions of this song, I think the best one is on JJ's Troubadour album. Give it a listen.

  • agree.
