@maesact sorry for the smiley thing, there was only meant to be one haha I have only just come back onto youtube after 3 years and a bit has changed haha
How did you get them NOT to run away? I want to clip my bird's feathers but I'm not sure I can trust him and I fear that he might run away or something.
@chocolateAnime09 well, if you aren't sure about clipping feathers yourself, a vet can teach you how to do it properly so you don't injure your bird :) As for them running away, they are enjoying the opportunity to eat fresh grass, so they would rather stay and eat that than fly away. There is a risk involved with keeping any animal that something may happen, but I would rather have my birds trained enough so that I have the confidence to let them outside and enjoy nature than be kept in a cage.
@tamaramacrae1990 haha yes, I watch out for that now, where I lived, there were no cats around, and the birds were very safe, but nowadays yes, there are cats, that is why my sister and I have to make sure that we watch them the whole time that they are outside :)
@supergodofcod4 You can see in the video that, yes, this owner clips their birds' wings. However, that's relatively irrelevant, especially with light-bodied and long-tailed birds like cockatiels and budgies. All it takes is for those birds to be startled or the slightest of breezes and the whole flock could be lose at once, no matter how tame they are. I strongly recommend that birds not be brought outside without a harness or carrier unless a wing-injury has rendered them /incapable/ of flight.
@ltdead I agree. No matter how tame the bird is, no matter how much you -think- your bird wont fly awy, it can happen. And its definetly better to be safe than sorry. Because when you're sorry, you only have luck and a prayer when it comes to getting your tiel back
@Cockatiel876 I never found my budgie he just literally vanished, strangely there was a falcon sitting on the cage earlier during the day. I was wondering whether the budgie just got eaten by the falcon or another predator. Funny enough one of my birds had wings but never left the fenced area, he would fly 2.5 metres high and land on the fence but never fly off. But when it did that my heart used to be in my mouth, my dad just kept letting them out saying nothing will happen.
to those arseholes who bang on about clipped wings. Budgies often inheret genetics that mean they never grow flight feathers. this is called french moult and they reproduce and live in the wild no problems. even if the bird has clipped wings it can still fly away if it gets some wind, mine did and never came back ....the time u least think it will happen it will do ur birdies a favor keep them inside or if they are outside in a pen so they cant get out.....
I clipped my birds wings and they used to walk around in my garden, they were able to easily fly away but they knew their limits. However one day I opened the cage to gain access to the food and on of the birds flew and gained a boost from the wind and disappeared somehow with clipped wings. But it's nice to let them walk around they eat things from the grass and enjoy pulling wood off fences etc.

Once I did the same with my parakeet. Then suddenly from nowhere a cat came took the bird and ran away. I followed the noise of the bird but the cat had the bird in his mouth and could hide in deep bushes. I cried soo much!!! I could hear the poor bird screeming but I couldn't do anything..
so.. plz be careful with taking your birds outside. If something happens you will never forgive yourself.
Very cute. My 'tiel's wings aren't clipped, so I don’t know if I could trust him outside like this. He gets very stressed if we even try to restrain him to clip his nails. He only likes me. He HATES other people....... Would a harness work alright for him?
you guys are retarded. how happy could a bird possibly be with its wings clipped? birds have wings for a reason. they want to fly- or at least to be able to fly every once in a while. omg they'll "fly far far away" if you don't clip the wings! uh yeah, maybe they want to....who would want to live in a cage, unable to do anything natural?
@jadoredashboard sure...i mean i totally agree with you and all. its all for the best to leave their wings as is so they can fly right out the door and be eaten by something much larger, but thats okay, you are the authority on this, even though its vet recommended. tell me, when and where did you get your veterinary degree?
You guys are idiots. If your bird is scared of you or hates you, it will fly away. I have two parakeets and diamond doves that I take out regularly and they don't have their wings clipped. They enjoy the outdoors and will stay with you unless you say so. There are a lot of free flight bird owners that allow their birds to fly around outside and they still come back. It takes training and gaining your bird's trust. I do not believe in clipping wings as it takes away the bird's freedom to fly.
@SakumaRyuichiNG: Even if the bird trusts and loves you, what if it panics, gets lost outside, and doesn't know where you are?
Clipping wings is all about ensuring its safety, even if the bird trusts you completely.
People who let their birds fly free outside run the risk of having the birds caught by a predator. I have seen a number of distressing stories by people who have lost their pets this way.
Believe me, birds caught by hawks meet a VERY painful, prolonged, and gruesome death.
That's probably in your country, you're lucky. Here there are no hawks in the city anymore. We are used to A LOT of noisy so our birds are used to it as well. It's difficult for them to be scared. That's my conclusion, 'coz really they can listen everything and keep on all calm down.
Well my opinion, I respect yours really; and I understand your point, but I guess it's different depending on the place you're living, that's all

listen, sometimes it is for a good thing for their wings to get clipped!! lots of birds can escape from cages and fly fly fly away forever!!!! so some people KNOW it is GOOD to CLIP WINGS!!! plus it doesnt harm the bird unless the bird moves too much during the proccess but usually isnt!! sheesh!!
yeah i had the same problem with my dogs so we just had the ligaments in their hind-legs permanently snipped. They don't run away anymore. But they do still bite. so we just muzzle them.
@XD4133: What a pathetic analogy. A bird's feathers will grow back, like fur and hair. A dog's ligaments won't. You are confusing wing clipping with pinioning.
We don't consider trimming a dog's coat mutilation or cruelty. We don't consider it a crime to get a haircut. Clipping a bird's wings should not be considered cruetly, either.
As a bird, I would rather live with clipped wings in the comfort of a loving family than die slowly in the grip of a hawk as it tears off my flesh bit by bit.
@hello229824 Yeah it's not bad to clip their wings, but to me it just feels like it's taking away a natural born right. Like how you have the right to freedom of speech. It shouldn't be our decision to be made for them. I get what you mean, but I would never clip their wings.
@hello229824 Yeah back when I was a kid my family lost our first parakeet when he escaped the cage and then flew out the front door as someone opened it with unlucky timing. He never came back.
heyy(: I haven't heard of PETCO, is it an Australian brand? because that's where I am, but yes, their wings are clipped and I do it myself, because I have a lot of experience, but you could get a vet or perhaps someone at a pet store to do it, but depends which is the cheapest, because they grow back often and sometimes a few at a time. Goodluck with your findings! (:
yes exactly! only once have i accidentally clipped a blood feather, and it wasn't deep, because the bird moved while I was trimming, and i just patched it up with some vaseline and he was good in a few mintues (Y)
It's pretty easy to clip the bird's wings. What I do is to take a scissor and snip off the the first 8 wing feathers of each wing. If the bird is light maybe you want to clip 9-10 instead, but generally by clipping 8 te bird can only glide.
abuse? *raises eyebrow* seriously, look at them! they are loving their time on the grass! I find it a perfectly beautiful video showing a happy family of birds! I don't see any abuse! and clipping wings does NOT impair ALL of their flight, just enough to get from perch to perch! if it was abuse, others would NOT have recommended the practice! if it makes you sick then don't watch it!
My birds live in an aviary outside in the backyard. The only way I am able to take them out and let them play in trees and run around on the grass (which they evidently enjoy) is if i trim their wings. I have trimmed wings for ages, and know what i am doing, I also was recommended to do it by vets and other bird enthusiasts. With people in the house who dislike birds flying around the house, wing trimming is the best way for my birds to enjoy the outdoors, and inside the house.
no crap you're taking their strongest form of transportation from them, and that example you gave is vague for if we don't have legs we can't travel but birds without FEATHERS still could .. AND there ARE flightless birds that ONLY use their legs...and you're telling me to learn?
You take them their natural instinct away, its like you having a paralysis with your legs, you have your legs but you cant use them, which is horrible!!
um ok, your problem is you're comparing two different things, birds without complete feathers could still feel their wings, move them, the feather s will grow back, they could walk, there are flightless birds. humans youre saying is like having paralysis, ?!?! birds could walk lol. and the human can't is what you're saying, if we have paralysis we wont be able to walk ever again. i know it's bad for the birdie but cmon, compare two similar things
omg dude, would u rather they fly away and die? ive lost more birds to no clipped wings than them walking around, especially if thier tame. wtf thier pet birds, itd b cruel if they were wild n didnt live n a cage of house, thats just mean, its not like it hurts them, my bird hates to fly, itd b cruel not to cut thier wings
i hav a female cockatiel, her name is Petri, and we clipped her wings and we hate it! our other cockatiel, Caspian, was supposed to get his wings clipped June 12th, but he followed my mom out the door, and flew away....he was a great flyer! i guess it wasnt ment to be for his wings to be clipped...i miss him....... <3CASPIAN-4EVER<3
yeah people don't realize all the pro's of keeping your parrot's wing's trimmed. You can take them everywhere, they can get plenty of fresh air, and play around outside without them flying away.
I never really thought of that.. how odd lol. That's a great idea, I'm not saying always have your bird's wings trimmed, but mine hasn't ever had it's wings trimmed nor played in the grass o.o. After hearing about the one bird that got eaten by a hawk it might be kinda scary >_> But in the grass while you watch it.. They grow back!
ohhh ok cause i used to have birds my dad wanted to clip its wings i said nooo then few years later they flew away.=[ poor cocoshella and maxy....lol weird names right?i made up the cocoshella thingy
i know how is it,but because of that i take just very jung parrot and den i make handfeeding...now,i can go run with my parrot:-)take a look...best wishes for u!dean
well that's ok if you think that, but my birdies love being outside eating grass, and playing in the tree and walking around with us. And also, they can still fly a bitand stretch their wings, I only cut the first few feathers so that they can fly from danger but not away completely. They have a great quality of life and I can have peace of mind knowing that they won't fly away.
Hy...why u cut their ferhers,just for to be outside?They are birds,they must fly,(but then just inside)i think u make mistake...sorry i dont support that!dean
its ok...when you mean....but i dont think so. because running, climbing and playing in their cage or with u its not like flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyying freeeeeeeeee like normal birds!sorry:-)
that is true, but it kinda depends how well your house is, and if your parakeets are calm flyers (unlike one of mine Lacey) Lacey bumps into walls and crashes all the time D= my other one is WAYYYY calmer though! But the problem is, they hate being away from each other D=
aww... i think they really enjoyed playing in the grass. i wish i can the same with our budgies. hehe. they might just fly away when we leave them to play in the grass. XD

Look at my other new post that I've written...
Budgies and cockatiels are swarm birds, they mostly fly in nature, they only make a rest for water and food.
You take them their natural instinct away...
I just clicked on this video by accident, I did not know that I had to watch birds having their wings clipped...

It is SO disgusting seeing this poor birds on the floor, and they can't fly away because their "owner" is so selfish and wants to take them outside...
They are BIRDS, no dogs.
Birds FLY, you should LEARN.
MrTruthcomesout 2 years ago
My birds live in an aviary outside in the backyard. The only way I am able to take them out and let them play in trees and run around on the grass (which they evidently enjoy) is if i trim their wings. I have trimmed wings for ages, and know what i am doing, I also was recommended to do it by vets and other bird enthusiasts. With people in the house who dislike birds flying around the house, wing trimming is the best way for my birds to enjoy the outdoors, and inside the house.

I understand what you mean, and I didn't want to attack you, sorry for that.
I have six cockatiels and I love them so much. I know how much they love to fly, maybe that is because I do react a bit sensitive about these things.
Budgies and especially cockatiels are swarm birds, in Australia they fly 50 km one day.
So what I'm trying to say was that you take them away their natural instinct, they can't use their wings anymore.
How would you feel if you couldn't use your legs anymore?

dude, it doesn't hurt for their wings to be clipped. unless you get their actual wing bone..LEARN
WhoSfgas 2 years ago 3
Of course it doesn't hurt, but you take them their natural instinct away!
How would you feel if your legs are gone, although you can still feel them??
I'm so sick of you wing-clippers...
MrTruthcomesout 2 years ago
no crap you're taking their strongest form of transportation from them, and that example you gave is vague for if we don't have legs we can't travel but birds without FEATHERS still could .. AND there ARE flightless birds that ONLY use their legs...and you're telling me to learn?
WhoSfgas 2 years ago 2
No, it's the truth and you know it...
You take them their natural instinct away, its like you having a paralysis with your legs, you have your legs but you cant use them, which is horrible!!
The same for birds and their wings...;)
MrTruthcomesout 2 years ago
um ok, your problem is you're comparing two different things, birds without complete feathers could still feel their wings, move them, the feather s will grow back, they could walk, there are flightless birds. humans youre saying is like having paralysis, ?!?! birds could walk lol. and the human can't is what you're saying, if we have paralysis we wont be able to walk ever again. i know it's bad for the birdie but cmon, compare two similar things
WhoSfgas 2 years ago 2
I'm really sensitive about these things, me and my girlfriend have two cockatiels which we absolutely love.
We love to see them flying, I mean come on, they are birds!
Yeah, they still have their wings but they can't fly!
MrTruthcomesout 2 years ago
i kno wat u mean, its like hair, they grow back, itd b evil not to cut thier wings
only people who really have birds and expierence with lose of the birds because of no clipped wings would know wat ur saying
i mean wat harm is it a bird walking, mine hates flyinh haha, its afraid to leave me half the time
good luck wiv ur fight with the idiot trauthcomes out guy haha
AnimeLoverForever16 2 years ago 4
omg dude, would u rather they fly away and die? ive lost more birds to no clipped wings than them walking around, especially if thier tame. wtf thier pet birds, itd b cruel if they were wild n didnt live n a cage of house, thats just mean, its not like it hurts them, my bird hates to fly, itd b cruel not to cut thier wings

haha my cockatiel is terrified of grass!!
mrtheroosterdude 2 years ago 3
yeah people don't realize all the pro's of keeping your parrot's wing's trimmed. You can take them everywhere, they can get plenty of fresh air, and play around outside without them flying away.
dogsarebetter 2 years ago
Yes But i'm also a strong believer in not clipping wings. However, if this happens you must train your birds from the earliest in their hatching.
Watch the Leo Bird videos
KingGeber 2 years ago
I never really thought of that.. how odd lol. That's a great idea, I'm not saying always have your bird's wings trimmed, but mine hasn't ever had it's wings trimmed nor played in the grass o.o. After hearing about the one bird that got eaten by a hawk it might be kinda scary >_> But in the grass while you watch it.. They grow back!

oh my goodness..........i lost my 5 month old cockatiel, Caspian, 2 months ago........but it was June 9th. =-{..i miss him so!

diatr 3 years ago
well that's ok if you think that, but my birdies love being outside eating grass, and playing in the tree and walking around with us. And also, they can still fly a bitand stretch their wings, I only cut the first few feathers so that they can fly from danger but not away completely. They have a great quality of life and I can have peace of mind knowing that they won't fly away.
Cockatiel324 3 years ago
Hy...why u cut their ferhers,just for to be outside?They are birds,they must fly,(but then just inside)i think u make mistake...sorry i dont support that!dean
diatr 3 years ago 2
they don`t need to fly, they can get exercise from playing in their cage, climbing, ect. Or running away from fingers lol
Meerkaty101 3 years ago
its ok...when you mean....but i dont think so. because running, climbing and playing in their cage or with u its not like flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyying freeeeeeeeee like normal birds!sorry:-)
diatr 3 years ago
my birds are not your average parakeets
Meerkaty101 3 years ago
all are birds...right?:-)
diatr 3 years ago
yes, but I do have 2 dogs and a crayfish XD
Meerkaty101 3 years ago
that is true, but it kinda depends how well your house is, and if your parakeets are calm flyers (unlike one of mine Lacey) Lacey bumps into walls and crashes all the time D= my other one is WAYYYY calmer though! But the problem is, they hate being away from each other D=
Meerkaty101 3 years ago
hee hee i have a bird just like that
ShelbyElling99 3 years ago
aww... i think they really enjoyed playing in the grass. i wish i can the same with our budgies. hehe. they might just fly away when we leave them to play in the grass. XD
