  • i study mjer but may i say this is a fantastic performance by a brilliant artist

  • Secrets of Yagyu Sinkage Ryu with English subtitles.

    watch?v=FfhtYKQ-iU0

  • Yeah the double sayabiki is interesting. Be curious how the school explains it... as a timing thing I can see where it would be harder... Otherwise as a MSR practitioner I just find all the little difference interesting and intriguing. Always fun to watch a master in another art. Thanks for posting.

  • domo arigato

    Thanks the upload!

  • To clarify the levels : Ishido Shizufumi sensei is 8th dan Hanshi and demonstrate a school wich is known by few people. So comments on technical points is a nonsense to be polite.

And more for Proton1: should you approach Ishido sensei, over exuberance is not the word that would come first !

Then Spoonifer if I don't mistake is 7th dan Kyoshi. So arguing with him is quite pointless.

  • Yes, George, it is Ishido Sensei, 8 Dan Hanshi. I belong to a iaido club within his line I had the pleasure of training for him at a few seminars. What he does here is different from the Musho Shinden Ryu he usually teaches within his line. He is simply amazing and a great teacher.

  • @Proton1 agreed, just check it out.

  • Proton1 - this is Jushin Ryu and this is the way that sayabiki is executed. It consists of two phases - sayabiki to achieve sayabanare and sayabiki to reinforce nukitsuke. The sense of timing required to do this as two separate movements is much harder than for doing a flowing transition as in seitei or MSR.

  • In MJER, a single sayabiki achieves banare and the reinforcement of nukitsuke. What makes Jushin Ryu special in that it requires two? All I see in it is extraneous movement that could be done away with.

Respect to Ishido, but this particular performance seems forced and, dare I say, over-exuberant. The double sayabiki may very well be a byproduct of that over-exuberance. Who knows.

  • Can I just ask you to justify your position to be able to make judgements like this. How many years have you been practicing iaido and what ranking have you achieved?

It's just that I'm starting to feel like a geologist talking to a member of the flat-earth society.

  • Seems quite unorthodox compared to what I see of most lines. Or is it a demonstration of kaewaza?

    Either way, it's pretty cool.

  • @Vodkakinesis If you read the older comments, you learn that he is Ishido-sensei (from the Ishido-line), and that here he is performing Jushin-ryu. It is correct it different from other schools.

  • Thanks for that information.

Does anyone know if this style is taught in the US?

  • I seem to recognise this guy - Is this Ishido Sensei?

  • Simply amazing. The movements seem perfect.

  • This owns! Total control!

  • this video make me even more grateful to be training in the shinbukan dojo in kawasaki.

  • real fight is much less cool and much more brutal.

  • Very Good ! !

  • ohh is any of you people in DNBK?

  • this guy is my senseis senseis sensei :P

  • such a good video, thank you for uploading!

  • What a magnificent showing of seme and domain of the sword!!!

  • Very interesting footage of rarely if either shown kata of that ryu wich is the closest one related to original Hayashizaki Ryu.

And yes the iaido of Ishido sensei is superb. I had the chance to see is performance with other Hanshi at the May 2007 Kyoto Taikai.

  • Yes this is great! You should see Ishido sensei in live that is very very impressing! Ihope that Spoonifer and every other sensei + Ishido sensei comes back to Gothenburg as said :)

  • Impressive. Quite distinct and energetic. Swift one-handed movements.

  • ahemm... I mean ... Sensei!

  • ishido sensei.

  • Well placed Andy! LOL

  • This is Ishido Shizufumi Sensei, 8th dan hanshi and Menkyo Kaiden. He is performing Jushin Ryu.

  • You sure about that, dude? Looks an awful lot like MSR to me.

  • Yup. I am Sensei's translator in Europe and have trained with him many times. He is a Menkyo Kaiden in MSR and one of the only two holders of the Jushin Hiden Books. He is performing Jushin Ryu, MSR is a synthesis of Jushin Ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu hence it looks similar. For every MSR kata there is a Jushin origin.

  • Very interesting.

  • Interesting stuff, AW. This is the first time I have seen Jushin Ryu. Any idea of the kata names?

  • Sure, the katas are much the same as MSR...

    Shohatto

    Gyakuto

    Yama oroshi

    Kasumi

    Yukichigai.

  • Does anyone know which ineage this sensei is from? Yamanouchi-ha?

  • Nice enbu! Thanks for posting it.
