Bought this when it came out. I was about 12. Poster sleeve. Still have it. Still play it. Still f-ing amazing. Poor kids nowadays. Not much comes close does it?
What a class band...they were a really pioneering band....they really never fitted in any particular genre...they were NEVER New Wave....never really punk....probably Post-Punk.. a band who could change their sound drastically from album to album..hard to label....like their contemporaries Magazine
Superb Scottish Band... the forerunner to those of the eighties who maybe had more airplay success but these guys were definitely the best...... and not just their well known tunes, but such as this and Charade and others are equally as brilliant than yankee dollar or into the valley...... Keep the music going.....
stuart adamson - the best guitarist i ever saw. skids were great -but on reflection dicky jobson was a canny chanter but also a complete tool,as his subsequent arty period showed. RIP stu - what a waste .
It is completely obvious, even to my yank arse, that the spectacular Johnny Rotten AND Joy Div. stole ALL from R.J. and the Skids crew. You can tell. It's too obvious these poor dumb Highlander brilliant N.E.D.s got duped and taken by the Britts and Germans punkers, alike. The Scotts kicked it all off, and we know we did!
@JimZ885 Nah - they were right in there with the lot of them. Also a big part of the New Romantic movement as well. Massive in North of England & I guess Scotland.
It's a terrible bit of absurdity that "Rolling Stone" lists Kurt Cobain, Jack White, and the Edge in the top 25 of their "100 Greatest Guitarists" of all time...and Stuart Adamson isn't on this list at all.
A truly great band.....they kinda bridged the gap between Punk and Post Punk BUT had a sound of their own.....they could be arty..they could do harder stuff too as with this song with amazing guitar riffs (a la Adamson's great guitar)....the 'obituray' of the band written the late great J.Peel on the back of their compilation album after they ended says it all..that perhaps what they had been looking for along.....originality.... had been staring them always in the face...kills modern muzak!
i saw the skids at birmingham odeon yonks and yonks ago, i even got my ticket signed by all of them , could be worth something too, as stuart not around anymore
...was Richard jobson a rock singer who wanted to be a weatherman or the other way round? Who cares-he was the funniest man on telly for me in the late 70s.
I always thought Simple Minds were the penultimate new wave band from Scotland, but it seems these guys were way more popular over there and had better record sales than the Minds, but The Skids were never huge or well known in Australia
I booted ma Da's dinner off his lap, dancin to this when it came on :) He was ragin , it was Lamb chops. Fuk im , I'd do it again, but who's the old bastard now ? :(
Think big jobson was buckled in this vid always made me laugh, incidentity thw great BURNEL set the band on thier way saw them a lot always grat live ,punk or not
Thanks for the info-I guess I'll get the record converted to cd and pay for an artwork conversion also-for a one off you can get this done for around £20-£25.I need this album on cd!
Sharkface, I've been trying for years to get Joy on CD. I have three vinyl copies. I've spoken with reps from Captain Oi! and apparently they don't think they'd recoup the investment of buying the rights from Virgin. I've even spoken with Russell Webb, the bass player, but so far no CD.
Ahhh fantastic...I remember avidly watching the single's chart progress from week to week, I was such a big fan...the intro up to the opening drum crash still sends a shiver up my spine to this day! Thanks for posting...
(Just received my copy of The Absolute Game on CD today...)
Walking through Bradford October 1980 just bought Circus Games, saw Richard Jobson!,saw them the same night at Bradford Uni,Richard was AWESOME!!,a truly original fashion pioneer!,one of the few white men to dance without Lager or Acid!,A GENIUS
Fantastic!!!! love the skids way back in 1978 my mate and I blagged an interview with them -Rrchard..........couldn't understand a word he said!!! his accent was so strong. remember taking a photo of Stuart and he just looked right at me and said"fuck off" ahhh wonderful memories of a wonderful group, loved their powerfull intros,THANKS for posting.
