Actually Smith should NOT have scored. This TD nearly cost them the game. New Orleans had no time outs left. He should have stepped out of bounds at the 2 yard line. Then they could have run the clock down to 8 seconds and kicked the game winning FG leaving the Saints no time. Had SF not gotten that last drive and New Orleans had won on their final TD, this play would have actually COST the 49ers the game and their season.
What's funny is he's holding the ball in the wrong arm (toward tacklers) so he can't stiff-arm and risks getting it stripped -- his coaches probably didn't breathe through the whole play. Bet he doesn't make that mistake again.

@bournefury No, you NEVER give up points, never! Why risk going offsides and then fumbling or an INT in the next play? You have 7 points staring you in the face, you take it without question. To run out of bounds would've been stupid and his ass would've been handed to him by Harbough.

@Prey521 But the goal is to win, I mean in this case the there was probably no chance of throwing a pick since they would have run to run the click down. I mean consider what happened, the saints went down and scored, what if the Niners couldn't have put together that amazing drive at the end. I understand there's risks, bobbled snaps etc. but it seems safer to run the clock down than give that NO offense the ball.

If Drew Brees never scored a TD that fast after this play the 49ers most likely would have lose. @healthyandyoung Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. Anything can happen. Botched snap, blocked kick. It would've been stupid to get conservative and simply go for a FG especially when the endzone is wide open.
You see an open lane for a TD, you take it. Its hard enough to score in the league as it is.

@psuallegator You must not watch the Niners very often because if you did you would know that they hardly ever score TD's. Usually they settle for a field goal. Why pull up short and not score and then you have to make sure to you protect the ball for over 2 more minutes. I'm glad Alex was the QB and not you cuz the Niners would not be playing in the NFC Championship with that play calling. Go Niners!!!

Actually Smith should NOT have scored. This TD nearly cost them the game. New Orleans had no time outs left. He should have stepped out of bounds at the 2 yard line. Then they could have run the clock down to 8 seconds and kicked the game winning FG leaving the Saints no time. Had SF not gotten that last drive and New Orleans had won on their final TD, this play would have actually COST the 49ers the game and their season.
