@DrunkDuck138 Tips as an acronym for "To Insure Proper Service" is a false etymology that you bought lock, stock, and barrel from liberal revisionist historians. It's false for two reasons. The first reason is that the acronym uses the wrong form of "ensure", so if it were true you would have to call them TEPS, but obviously that sounds stupid. Secondly, tipping was an English custom among the wealthy that was brought to the U.S. by people wanting to flaunt their own supposed wealth.
Andrew you need to understand how the job system works. You are hired to perform a service, waiting in this case comes with a minimum wage (Fair Labor Standard) its there in plain english. If you aren't getting paid for serving, then you're being cheated.. plain and simple. It is not the job of the customers to keep you paid, tipping is a nice "bonus", but nothing more than a gratuity. The fact the you keep denying this is vacuous on your part.
The Fair Labor Standards Act states that employees earning at least $30/month in tips can be paid $2.13/hr in direct wages and pay taxes on their tips. Employers are the ones who have the final say on what servers get paid so long as it's at least $2.13/hr. Now tell me where in any of this the customers own responsibility for paying your rent. If you don't like what you get paid, don't get mad the customers who don't control your paycheck. Voice that to your employer who's laughing to the bank.
3.19!!! Psh I get 2.13...all of which goes to health insurance/taxes....the only money that I take home and that pays my bills comes from tips. I give great service to all my tables and in return I expect a 20% tip, and I usually get it :)
I think waiters should get payed minimum wage, if I'm expected to pay more I'd like to see it reflected in the menu price, rather than having to bend to what seems to be an ever fluctuating percentage based on good faith. WTF kind of system is that? Blame the government not the customer I personally believe it's outrageous the can pay you below minimum wage.
I'd also like to say here in WA state paying 20% is insane since in this state employers are required to pay servers minimum wage...Minimum wage in WA is 8.55 an hour.
rofl i work in belguilm as a waiter and i dont need tips its welkom XD but i realy dont need it to cover my "low pay" my tip is if your low payd find a new job at a privit bar
"We will remember, and we will react accordingly", so it's okay to be scornful and fascist when it comes to wanting my tip?, thats horrible, its fickle and its campy. It's like a game of baseball, you're getting mad at one person that doesnt tip, but you exclude the facts that you've been tipped tenfold before and after the person arrived to your bar.
"so it's okay to be scornful and fascist when it comes to wanting my tip?"
Absolutely. Regardless what you think about the system, it's in place for a reason, and I'm not interested in working for free, thanks.
"you exclude the facts that you've been tipped tenfold before and after"
Yup. And those people are the ones I'm going to make my priority. As a bartender, if you've proven yourself to be a poor tipper tenfold, you'll be lucky to get a drink at ALL.
@nekkidandrew There isn't a "system" that's the whole point here. Your job is to serve drinks regardless of getting a tip or not. You don't get a tip you don't stop serving.
I don't have to prove myself to a bartender, you serve the drinks or I talk to your manager, and your wrong, a bad tip doesn't mean I shouldn't get a drink. It means you need to step off your high horse. It's not my fault you couldn't finish school, nor is it my responsibility to see you get things just because.
You certainly do have to prove yourself if you want anything resembling efficient service. I mean, I'll certainly give a new face the benefit of a doubt, but if your bad tipping habits become habitual, the level of service you receive declines, because I have no reason to be concerned about your experience. Why should I prioritize the sort of lowlife who wants something for free?
And any manager worth his salt wouldn't patronize a habitually rude customer. There's a line to be drawn.
@nekkidandrew , I don't have to prove myself in order to get efficient service. It's your job to serve tables, it has nothing to do with judging me because I didn't tip you. Bad tipping is not bad revenue, when I keep returning back to the place I enjoyed , I provide a steady revenue, and thats what matters.
How does not tipping make me a "low life"? I still paid for the food, and I never asked for anything free, so thats just you creating strawman arguments. Your job is to serve.
@ PrisonCipher Sure it does. An employee expects to be paid for a job well done. If you don't tip, I don't get paid. And I'm not going to work for free.
You may have paid for the food, but you ARE asking for something for free. You're asking for free service. You can pay for food anywhere - grocery store, Subway, pizza place - but you come into a restaurant to be served. If you expect THAT for free, you are, in fact, a lowlife. Thanks.
@nekkidandrew , well actually no, you still get paid, just not as much as you want to be, and that's when greed steps in. You get a paycheck, it just doesn't look the same when you're not tipped a couple of dollars every night. No server works for free, do some research, you get more money through tips, but its not the only way you get paid.
I don't think you ever worked as a server if you think you only get paid during tips, or you might have been conned into labor.
@PrisonCipher, You might wanna gain a little bit of knowledge about the topic at hand if you're interested in arguing about it. I don't doubt that SOME people are paid a livable wage - my first serving job was a small restaurant in Boston, and my tips were in addition to my $10/hr pay. But standard wage in my state and the surrounding states for servers and bartenders is $2.13 an hour, which is, of course, almost always voided after taxes are deducted and all that.... by and large, not everyone
(cont'd) is like you, and my tips are usually just fine. My paycheck, however, after I correctly claim my tips, is typically less than 3 bucks. Every two weeks.
This isn't to whine. I have no problem with the system as is. BUT, I'm not gonna play ball with those proven willing to ignore the customs, because, again, it would be working for free. I just got back from work, actually, and tonight I simply ignored a customer at the bar who's seen fit on multiple occasions to simply not tip
So you're okay with earning less than 3 dollars as long as you get tips? Isn't that the problem to begin with? You're playing ball, yet you wish to not accept some common truths. You decided to pick up serving. Tipping is optional , its called gratuity for a reason. But like I said before, your sense of what you're entitled to is ridiculous.
My "sense of entitlement" isn't any more ridiculous than yours. I think I'm entitled to a tip, you think you're entitled to free service. Your job here is not to criticize me for my job choice. I've accepted that this is what I get paid for bartending. You, on the other hand, refuse to accept that there's certain customs you're expected to abide by as a bar guest. I may be playing ball, but I'm doing everything by the book. You're asking to play the game, but you don't want the rules to apply.
Okay since you're not getting the core mechanic here I'll state it clearly. I don't expect free service, I expect you to do your job. I'm not hiring you, so your not working pro bono. The ego on people like you is the reason I don't tip. Look up the word gratuity. I assume you get angry when someone you know doesn't get you a present for Christmas? Customs do not = mandatory. Thats what you seem to be side stepping. Your job is to serve, I'm entitled to ask for a free drink, and thats all.
@PrisonCipher: Well, you DO seem to expect free service. The meat and potatoes of your argument is that you don't want to pay for your service, and expect it regardless of whether or not you pay. I'm not sure what you're not getting here.
And I don't get mad when I don't get Christmas presents. I prefer to enjoy the company of family on Christmas - gifts can be fun, but I'm not 12 years old anymore. That shit doesn't matter to me.
You're entitled to ask for a free drink? Under what logic?
@nekkid erroneous, I expect a server to do his/her job. I don't pay for their services, I pay for the food. I should tip the cook, but thats a whole other story. So let me get this straight "that shit doesn't matter to me" but tipping does? You do know that no one has ever made a career out of serving tables right? It's usually a stepping stone.
It's called a gratuity for a reason, you have to perform above average for a tip, your job is to serve, you work harder for the gratuity.
@PrisonCipher Well, perhaps you don't pay for their services. That's what tipping is - paying for a service. You proved my point precisely: the menu price absolutely pays for your food, while your tip pays for the service. Again, it simply proves how greedy a non-tipper is - they expect service for free. Bratty entitlement - is there anything more noxious?
And people have made careers out of serving. Not me, but in a high-end restaurant a career server could outperform her manager come payday.
@nekkid False, I pay for the food, not for your service. Your job isn't that of a "free agent". You get paid whether I tip you or not correct?, then I'm not paying for a service, I might give a gratuity but thats it, unless worked into the check, tipping is optional. You really have it wrong. Tipping is not paying for a service, its a reward for above average performance, seriously use google or wiki.
@PrisonCipher Okay, it seems we're gonna have to make this a little simpler. A server or bartender - in MOST instances - does not get paid whether or not you tip. I've seen it happen, yes, but most employers dole out minimum tipped wage as per state law, therefore having the employee's taxes eat up the meager $2.13/hr (or thereabouts) paycheck and leaving tips to pick up the slack. You don't have to agree with the system - many don't - but that doesn't constitute an excuse to take advantage of
@nekki if you're a server and you aren't getting paid minimum wage, you're either getting stiffed or work in a shady bar. Either way its a paying job, you can bring up any anecdotal story you want, its still the truth, serving is a job and not a "free agent" service.
You're misunderstanding what a tip is, its a gratuity, not anything else. You should be getting paid via minimum wage or your manager. Tipping is an option, whether you care to admit it or not.
@PrisonCipher, there's a difference between minimum wage and minimum wage as it pertains to tipped employees. High-traffic restaurants and chains will never have full federal minimum wage on their payroll for servers and bartenders - that's just the way it is. If that's a shady establishment, then every establishment you've ever been to is, by your definition, shady. It's a paying job when customers pony up the correct amount for tipping - otherwise, you can't expect those paychecks to feed
@nekkid except you just proved my point, server do get paid, how much they get paid is irrelevant as they sign a contract to get paid a certain amount of money by default, unless of course working off the books, but that adds more to the "shady" bar he/she might work at. By law every server working gets paid a minimum wage. Tipping is still an option regardless, its a gratuity unless worked into the check, till then it will remain an option.
@PrisonCipher You're right in that, legally, tipping is an option. That's unfortunate. But since tipping IS a fee paid for services rendered, a moral obligation would compel a person of any ethical character to tip, since without that fee, the employee waits on the table free of charge.
@nekk You're missing the other point here, Tipping isn't a service fee, the server isn't under any contract agreed between him and the customer. The server is already getting paid to serve/wait tables, the "bonus" as it were, is the tip. You can google or youtube the info on how much servers get paid currently ($2.15-3.00) and realize that tipping is purely gratuity as they're already getting paid.
A server has to wait on tables, this is an agreement with the manager before hand.
@PrisonCipher You... you don't really understand things that you read, do you? The server is NOT already getting paid. I'm not sure how you're not understanding this. That's how the system works. What gets taken out of a typical paycheck is rarely covered by the hourly wage. Typically, this results in a voided paycheck. Therefore, the customer IS responsible for paying the server, and it is reprehensible to do otherwise. Disagree all you want, but you're incorrect.
A tip is payment for a service rendered in a certain field; if you do not agree with that, you are the one who misunderstands what a tip is. That is fact, like it or not, indisputably. You can say what the business "should do" until you're blue in the face, but until the system is changed, if you don't play by its rules, you're shorting innocent employees of funds that they worked for. That's the bottom line here; that's what the fact are.
(cont'd) the employee. Tipping IS paying for a service, and that's the fact, whether or not you care to admit it. I agree that the AMOUNT of the tip can fluctuate based on the performance of individuals - if you were displeased with your service, it makes sense to leave a smaller tip than you would for an excellent dining experience - but at its basest level, restaurant-going comes down to a simple equation: bill (price of items) + tip (price of service) = cost. And that's all there is to it.
It's like having a pro bball player complaining about his fouls when he keeps smacking everyone. It' stupid to argue about something that you have total control over.
"Make your own damn martini", so it's okay to be a fascist just because I don't feel like tipping?. It's America, I can go where I want, and tipping is a GRATUITY, look up the word. I'm not going to tip every waiter I go to, just because of "etiquette"
Lets face it, it's all greed at some point, every waiter in NY (where I live) now expects tips....expecting gratuity?....imagine if Frank Sinatra heard that, or Dean Martin. American's are far too lazy and stupid these days.
If you don't tip we are slaves. I make 2 dollars an hour and I get taxed like you tipped 15% even if you leave me nothing. And as far as getting another job, I would love to! But the problem w/ that is the economy sucks and I have bills that have to be paid now. So tip ur waitress and shut up! : )
it's waiters' job to take my order, bring the food to my table, bring the refills, the check and take the money. if they go beyond that then they deserve a little extra. i dont tip cause i have to.
and don't give me that crap that you rely on tips only, if you dont like it, get another job.
MAN you're lucky I only get 500 characters to reply to you with!
YES, you're right, it is our job to take your order, serve your food, etc etc, but guess what? I dont even get paid half of minimum wage to do that, with a shit ton of taxes taken out, my average paycheck is $90 for 40+ hours of work.. not to mention i have to tip out food runners, bussers, etc... get another job you say? Okay but then who will be there to wait on you hand and foot? hmm. we work hard for you, pay us for it
it is not my job to pay you. it's your employers responsibility to make sure you get minimum wage. you say you work hard for me, so i have to pay you??? you are working for the restaurant performing your job. i pay them for FOOD and waiters are not on my payroll. other jobs are hard too and low paid but why dont those ppl get tips??? bullshit.
all waiters watch this and stfu watch?v=Z-qV9wVGb38
Don't you think we would like if our employers paid us enough for our labor? but no that's not the way it works, when you go to a resturant you should be expecting to pay your server for the time and labor they spend on you, it's just how it is... if you don't plan on tipping then you may as well just go though a drive through. DO NOT say shit to me until you spend a little time being a server, trust me.. you'll get it then.
OH and one more thing... yes there are plenty of underpaid jobs out there but i can gurentree you there are none that make HALF minimum wage (at least not legally) and guess what? there is a reason we aren't working in those jobs, because we can make damn good money at what we do, unless of course we are serving ignorant cheap asses, and trust me there are plenty of those! Which is why this video and others like it exsist.
2x4, in that very video, the one guy refusing to tip says at 1:16 "Jesus Christ, these ladies aren't starving to death, they're making minimum wage" -- that's false. Waitresses make $2.13/hr, even though Federal minimum wage in America is $7.40/hr. THEY MAKE $2.13/hr BECAUSE YOU ARE EXPECTED TO TIP THEM. That entire scene has absolutely no meaning because the director/producer didn't have their facts straight. THEY DO NOT MAKE MIN. WAGE - THEY MAKE LESS THAN THAT BECAUSE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TIP
I don't mind servers advocating a 20%+ tipping rate, because they're the ones who benefit from it. I work in Operations, and I think Ops employees should make $100k a year. Doesn't mean it will happen, but I can hope.
What's amazing is this sense of entitlement, as though I am *obligated* to subsidize your existence because your actual employer is, for some reason, allowed to pay you less than minimum wage.
AT LEAST 20% What happened to 15%? What accounts for this constant increase?
@eunicron The main problem with a percentage system is that it does not reflect the level of service. It takes the same effort to bring a customer a burger as it does baby back ribs, though the latter costs twice the former. Logically, if a tip is given based on level of service, it should be rendered to the chef who must possess that knowledge, but he/she is not included in the tip pool. Only the servers, bus people, hosts, and bartenders share tips, yet only the last entity requires skill.
how about you get a better job? i never tip. they don't cook the food or wash the dishes. they just bring food. if i could i would just walk over to the cooks and get my damn food myself.
Yeah, don't I wish that all servers did was bring food! LMAO! You don't see what goes on after hours, when they're all there cleaning the entire freakin restaurant for $2.13 an hour! They rely on the tips for their sustenance! And that's not counting the 8 or so hours spent on their feet on the floor running around catering to you and cleaning up after you and everybody else and dealing with customers who come in in a bitchy mood and take it out on a waitress they've never even met!
And, yes, I've seen it happen all the time. But all they do is "bring food." *rolls eyes* And out of those tips that they get, they have to pay out a percentage to the hosts and busboys and others for THEIR tips. And the amount of money they have to pay out of their tips is based on their sales for the shift. So say they're a really good server and they make a lot of sales, their tipout is going to be really high. They have to pay a tipout based on your meal, whether you tip or not.
So if you don't tip, they actually have to pay money in FOR you. If you don't tip, they actually lose money. They lose money for the tipout they have to pay and they lose money because they have to pay taxes based on the meal YOU ate. Now, when was the last time you went to work and had to pay THEM money out of YOUR pocket, instead of the other way around, and you were happy about it?
The attitude the girl here displays is one born out of frustration from being screwed over by the customer one too many times and I can tell you from experience, it's what every one of us waitresses have thought at one point or another every single day. One thought, too, based on your comment about getting a better job: if everybody did that, there would be no waitresses left and then you couldn't go out to eat anywhere, now could you, because there would be no one to serve you?
And without servers, no restaurant could survive, so there would be no restaurants left for you to eat at. It's a hard job and somebody's got to do it. So, basically, if you go out to eat and you don't tip your server, you're f*****g somebody over who just worked their a** off to do a really good job for you. Hope you're proud of yourself.
Just to let you know, I work in a restaurant and I see what they do. And personally they don't do a very good job. And maybe if they would have gone to college they would have gotten a better job. And if they are a waitress trying to make money for college maybe they should get another job. And to the girl who made this video, if you aren't getting tipped, thats because you suck.
if you have to rely on getting tipped... STAY HOMEE!! and LOOK FOR A REALLL job...
What the fuck are you doing going out to eat anyways bitch? you should be in the kitchen making some pancakes and sandwiches and shit you filthy looking whore. If i told you i'd love you would you let me fuck you in the ass?
Bitch, if you were my bartender, I would not tip you for being a pompous little whore. WTF is wrong with you? You CHOOSE to go into the service industry. It's not as if you were forced into the job. If you don't like it, get another fucking job. You are not entitled to MY money. The restaurant should be paying you more.
haha, this is the worst tipping video ever! It's chicks like you why people feel hostile toward tipping. I'm not tipping 15% for crappy service no matter what. Get real! *LOL*
If the bartender or waitress is having a bad day, they need to leave that shit outside of the restaurant before they come in to work, because if I got a waitress with an atttude like yours, she would get JACK !!
A dollar a drink ??? so let me get this straight....I go to the bar, ask for a beer, A BEER THAT'S ALREADY MADE AND BOTTLED, all the bartender does is open the bottle, and I have to pay EXTRA for that ??? Get outta here with that bull.
Now, I usually tip 15%, but this bullshit attitude from all of you servers is really irritating. Why don't you go to your boss and demand that he or she PAY YOU MORE THAN $3.00 AN HOUR ???? Instead of being mad at us, you should be mad at the scheister who's ripping you off on a daily basis. No one put a gun to your head and made you take that job.
Um, the government has more to do with the pay rate than the restaurant owners. They make a killing on the taxes they get from tipped employees and the owners of such businesses. And frankly, if servers didn't get such attitudes from customers on a regular basis, they wouldn't reciprocate. How would YOU like if a customer came into your workplace with a bitchy attitude for whatever reason and proceeded to take it out on you, someone he's never even met? It happens quite regularly to us servers.
What do you think being a server is all about? That's right, working for money. If we don't smile at you just right, we don't get tipped. If we're too busy to thank you profusely for coming in, we don't get tipped. Screw the fact that we work like dogs to keep all of our tables satisfied at one time. We're just servers. We don't have a REAL job.
" ... because we do remember and we will act accordingly."
Nice work ethics.

There's a line to be drawn.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekkidandrew , I don't have to prove myself in order to get efficient service. It's your job to serve tables, it has nothing to do with judging me because I didn't tip you. Bad tipping is not bad revenue, when I keep returning back to the place I enjoyed , I provide a steady revenue, and thats what matters.
How does not tipping make me a "low life"? I still paid for the food, and I never asked for anything free, so thats just you creating strawman arguments. Your job is to serve.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@ PrisonCipher Sure it does. An employee expects to be paid for a job well done. If you don't tip, I don't get paid. And I'm not going to work for free.
You may have paid for the food, but you ARE asking for something for free. You're asking for free service. You can pay for food anywhere - grocery store, Subway, pizza place - but you come into a restaurant to be served. If you expect THAT for free, you are, in fact, a lowlife. Thanks.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekkidandrew , well actually no, you still get paid, just not as much as you want to be, and that's when greed steps in. You get a paycheck, it just doesn't look the same when you're not tipped a couple of dollars every night. No server works for free, do some research, you get more money through tips, but its not the only way you get paid.
I don't think you ever worked as a server if you think you only get paid during tips, or you might have been conned into labor.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher, You might wanna gain a little bit of knowledge about the topic at hand if you're interested in arguing about it. I don't doubt that SOME people are paid a livable wage - my first serving job was a small restaurant in Boston, and my tips were in addition to my $10/hr pay. But standard wage in my state and the surrounding states for servers and bartenders is $2.13 an hour, which is, of course, almost always voided after taxes are deducted and all that.... by and large, not everyone
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
(cont'd) is like you, and my tips are usually just fine. My paycheck, however, after I correctly claim my tips, is typically less than 3 bucks. Every two weeks.
This isn't to whine. I have no problem with the system as is. BUT, I'm not gonna play ball with those proven willing to ignore the customs, because, again, it would be working for free. I just got back from work, actually, and tonight I simply ignored a customer at the bar who's seen fit on multiple occasions to simply not tip
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
So you're okay with earning less than 3 dollars as long as you get tips? Isn't that the problem to begin with? You're playing ball, yet you wish to not accept some common truths. You decided to pick up serving. Tipping is optional , its called gratuity for a reason. But like I said before, your sense of what you're entitled to is ridiculous.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
My "sense of entitlement" isn't any more ridiculous than yours. I think I'm entitled to a tip, you think you're entitled to free service. Your job here is not to criticize me for my job choice. I've accepted that this is what I get paid for bartending. You, on the other hand, refuse to accept that there's certain customs you're expected to abide by as a bar guest. I may be playing ball, but I'm doing everything by the book. You're asking to play the game, but you don't want the rules to apply.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
Okay since you're not getting the core mechanic here I'll state it clearly. I don't expect free service, I expect you to do your job. I'm not hiring you, so your not working pro bono. The ego on people like you is the reason I don't tip. Look up the word gratuity. I assume you get angry when someone you know doesn't get you a present for Christmas? Customs do not = mandatory. Thats what you seem to be side stepping. Your job is to serve, I'm entitled to ask for a free drink, and thats all.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher: Well, you DO seem to expect free service. The meat and potatoes of your argument is that you don't want to pay for your service, and expect it regardless of whether or not you pay. I'm not sure what you're not getting here.
And I don't get mad when I don't get Christmas presents. I prefer to enjoy the company of family on Christmas - gifts can be fun, but I'm not 12 years old anymore. That shit doesn't matter to me.
You're entitled to ask for a free drink? Under what logic?
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekkid erroneous, I expect a server to do his/her job. I don't pay for their services, I pay for the food. I should tip the cook, but thats a whole other story. So let me get this straight "that shit doesn't matter to me" but tipping does? You do know that no one has ever made a career out of serving tables right? It's usually a stepping stone.
It's called a gratuity for a reason, you have to perform above average for a tip, your job is to serve, you work harder for the gratuity.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher Well, perhaps you don't pay for their services. That's what tipping is - paying for a service. You proved my point precisely: the menu price absolutely pays for your food, while your tip pays for the service. Again, it simply proves how greedy a non-tipper is - they expect service for free. Bratty entitlement - is there anything more noxious?
And people have made careers out of serving. Not me, but in a high-end restaurant a career server could outperform her manager come payday.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekkid False, I pay for the food, not for your service. Your job isn't that of a "free agent". You get paid whether I tip you or not correct?, then I'm not paying for a service, I might give a gratuity but thats it, unless worked into the check, tipping is optional. You really have it wrong. Tipping is not paying for a service, its a reward for above average performance, seriously use google or wiki.
Anecdotal claims don't help you argument.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher Okay, it seems we're gonna have to make this a little simpler. A server or bartender - in MOST instances - does not get paid whether or not you tip. I've seen it happen, yes, but most employers dole out minimum tipped wage as per state law, therefore having the employee's taxes eat up the meager $2.13/hr (or thereabouts) paycheck and leaving tips to pick up the slack. You don't have to agree with the system - many don't - but that doesn't constitute an excuse to take advantage of
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekki if you're a server and you aren't getting paid minimum wage, you're either getting stiffed or work in a shady bar. Either way its a paying job, you can bring up any anecdotal story you want, its still the truth, serving is a job and not a "free agent" service.
You're misunderstanding what a tip is, its a gratuity, not anything else. You should be getting paid via minimum wage or your manager. Tipping is an option, whether you care to admit it or not.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher, there's a difference between minimum wage and minimum wage as it pertains to tipped employees. High-traffic restaurants and chains will never have full federal minimum wage on their payroll for servers and bartenders - that's just the way it is. If that's a shady establishment, then every establishment you've ever been to is, by your definition, shady. It's a paying job when customers pony up the correct amount for tipping - otherwise, you can't expect those paychecks to feed
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekkid except you just proved my point, server do get paid, how much they get paid is irrelevant as they sign a contract to get paid a certain amount of money by default, unless of course working off the books, but that adds more to the "shady" bar he/she might work at. By law every server working gets paid a minimum wage. Tipping is still an option regardless, its a gratuity unless worked into the check, till then it will remain an option.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher You're right in that, legally, tipping is an option. That's unfortunate. But since tipping IS a fee paid for services rendered, a moral obligation would compel a person of any ethical character to tip, since without that fee, the employee waits on the table free of charge.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekk You're missing the other point here, Tipping isn't a service fee, the server isn't under any contract agreed between him and the customer. The server is already getting paid to serve/wait tables, the "bonus" as it were, is the tip. You can google or youtube the info on how much servers get paid currently ($2.15-3.00) and realize that tipping is purely gratuity as they're already getting paid.
A server has to wait on tables, this is an agreement with the manager before hand.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher You... you don't really understand things that you read, do you? The server is NOT already getting paid. I'm not sure how you're not understanding this. That's how the system works. What gets taken out of a typical paycheck is rarely covered by the hourly wage. Typically, this results in a voided paycheck. Therefore, the customer IS responsible for paying the server, and it is reprehensible to do otherwise. Disagree all you want, but you're incorrect.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
@nekkidandrew Andrew, I've been meaning to ask you something. Did the police ever catch the guy?
MelkorHimself 1 year ago
(cont'd) families.
That's the bottom line here; that's what the fact are.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
(cont'd) the employee. Tipping IS paying for a service, and that's the fact, whether or not you care to admit it. I agree that the AMOUNT of the tip can fluctuate based on the performance of individuals - if you were displeased with your service, it makes sense to leave a smaller tip than you would for an excellent dining experience - but at its basest level, restaurant-going comes down to a simple equation: bill (price of items) + tip (price of service) = cost. And that's all there is to it.
nekkidandrew 1 year ago
It's like having a pro bball player complaining about his fouls when he keeps smacking everyone. It' stupid to argue about something that you have total control over.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
"Make your own damn martini", so it's okay to be a fascist just because I don't feel like tipping?. It's America, I can go where I want, and tipping is a GRATUITY, look up the word. I'm not going to tip every waiter I go to, just because of "etiquette"
Lets face it, it's all greed at some point, every waiter in NY (where I live) now expects tips....expecting gratuity?....imagine if Frank Sinatra heard that, or Dean Martin. American's are far too lazy and stupid these days.
PrisonCipher 2 years ago
If you don't tip we are slaves. I make 2 dollars an hour and I get taxed like you tipped 15% even if you leave me nothing. And as far as getting another job, I would love to! But the problem w/ that is the economy sucks and I have bills that have to be paid now. So tip ur waitress and shut up! : )
krscrossed 2 years ago
it's waiters' job to take my order, bring the food to my table, bring the refills, the check and take the money. if they go beyond that then they deserve a little extra. i dont tip cause i have to.
and don't give me that crap that you rely on tips only, if you dont like it, get another job.
2x4 2 years ago
MAN you're lucky I only get 500 characters to reply to you with!
YES, you're right, it is our job to take your order, serve your food, etc etc, but guess what? I dont even get paid half of minimum wage to do that, with a shit ton of taxes taken out, my average paycheck is $90 for 40+ hours of work.. not to mention i have to tip out food runners, bussers, etc... get another job you say? Okay but then who will be there to wait on you hand and foot? hmm. we work hard for you, pay us for it
missnaomi89 2 years ago
it is not my job to pay you. it's your employers responsibility to make sure you get minimum wage. you say you work hard for me, so i have to pay you??? you are working for the restaurant performing your job. i pay them for FOOD and waiters are not on my payroll. other jobs are hard too and low paid but why dont those ppl get tips??? bullshit.
all waiters watch this and stfu watch?v=Z-qV9wVGb38

Don't you think we would like if our employers paid us enough for our labor? but no that's not the way it works, when you go to a resturant you should be expecting to pay your server for the time and labor they spend on you, it's just how it is... if you don't plan on tipping then you may as well just go though a drive through. DO NOT say shit to me until you spend a little time being a server, trust me.. you'll get it then.
missnaomi89 2 years ago
OH and one more thing... yes there are plenty of underpaid jobs out there but i can gurentree you there are none that make HALF minimum wage (at least not legally) and guess what? there is a reason we aren't working in those jobs, because we can make damn good money at what we do, unless of course we are serving ignorant cheap asses, and trust me there are plenty of those! Which is why this video and others like it exsist.
missnaomi89 2 years ago

Well said, Haley!!

What accounts for this constant increase?
eunicron 3 years ago

redblade79 2 years ago
@eunicron The main problem with a percentage system is that it does not reflect the level of service. It takes the same effort to bring a customer a burger as it does baby back ribs, though the latter costs twice the former. Logically, if a tip is given based on level of service, it should be rendered to the chef who must possess that knowledge, but he/she is not included in the tip pool. Only the servers, bus people, hosts, and bartenders share tips, yet only the last entity requires skill.
MelkorHimself 1 year ago
how about you get a better job? i never tip. they don't cook the food or wash the dishes. they just bring food. if i could i would just walk over to the cooks and get my damn food myself.
jakeschires 3 years ago
Yeah, don't I wish that all servers did was bring food! LMAO! You don't see what goes on after hours, when they're all there cleaning the entire freakin restaurant for $2.13 an hour! They rely on the tips for their sustenance! And that's not counting the 8 or so hours spent on their feet on the floor running around catering to you and cleaning up after you and everybody else and dealing with customers who come in in a bitchy mood and take it out on a waitress they've never even met!
rickyfan3956 3 years ago
And, yes, I've seen it happen all the time. But all they do is "bring food." *rolls eyes* And out of those tips that they get, they have to pay out a percentage to the hosts and busboys and others for THEIR tips. And the amount of money they have to pay out of their tips is based on their sales for the shift. So say they're a really good server and they make a lot of sales, their tipout is going to be really high. They have to pay a tipout based on your meal, whether you tip or not.
rickyfan3956 3 years ago
So if you don't tip, they actually have to pay money in FOR you. If you don't tip, they actually lose money. They lose money for the tipout they have to pay and they lose money because they have to pay taxes based on the meal YOU ate. Now, when was the last time you went to work and had to pay THEM money out of YOUR pocket, instead of the other way around, and you were happy about it?
rickyfan3956 3 years ago
The attitude the girl here displays is one born out of frustration from being screwed over by the customer one too many times and I can tell you from experience, it's what every one of us waitresses have thought at one point or another every single day. One thought, too, based on your comment about getting a better job: if everybody did that, there would be no waitresses left and then you couldn't go out to eat anywhere, now could you, because there would be no one to serve you?
rickyfan3956 3 years ago
And without servers, no restaurant could survive, so there would be no restaurants left for you to eat at. It's a hard job and somebody's got to do it. So, basically, if you go out to eat and you don't tip your server, you're f*****g somebody over who just worked their a** off to do a really good job for you. Hope you're proud of yourself.
rickyfan3956 3 years ago
Then please, by all means, go to a fast food restaurant so you can go through the drive-thru.
redblade79 2 years ago
Just to let you know, I work in a restaurant and I see what they do. And personally they don't do a very good job. And maybe if they would have gone to college they would have gotten a better job. And if they are a waitress trying to make money for college maybe they should get another job. And to the girl who made this video, if you aren't getting tipped, thats because you suck.
jakeschires 2 years ago
if you have to rely on getting tipped...

While I agree waitresses and Bartenders should be tipped, I don't think your attitude is going to help the situation.
babydoll1566 3 years ago
Bitch, if you were my bartender, I would not tip you for being a pompous little whore. WTF is wrong with you? You CHOOSE to go into the service industry. It's not as if you were forced into the job. If you don't like it, get another fucking job. You are not entitled to MY money. The restaurant should be paying you more.

We all servers know..most people from the South do not know how to tip. You are a clear example.
Ralva23 1 year ago
Now, I usually tip 15%, but this bullshit attitude from all of you servers is really irritating. Why don't you go to your boss and demand that he or she PAY YOU MORE THAN $3.00 AN HOUR ???? Instead of being mad at us, you should be mad at the scheister who's ripping you off on a daily basis. No one put a gun to your head and made you take that job.
OhioKev 3 years ago
