Schiötz has long been my favorite lied singer. He sings with longing, sadness, and sweetness . This plus his impeccable vocal production and interpretation makes him the König of Dichterliebe.
I became acquanted w/Aksel Shiotz's HMV recordings when I was 14 years old. I am now 56. Aside from Tauber, & Fischer-Dieskau, (Wunderlich is "zu schnell" Shiotz's interpretation is priceless. 5***** Cudos to Schumann, he gives the accompanist actually something to do to add to the spice of the piece. He was probably keeping Clara's pianism in mind when composing this cycle.
I enjoyed a lot. A pity I have no way of being sure that this is superb singing, as I do not know German. But I am sure I loved it. I must learn German!
Aksel Schiotz or Shiutz according to spelling or mask singer, nickname given to him because of his singing on radio during war II, has the melancolia tone perfectly suitable for the Dichterliebe. His musicality and phrasing as well as his diction are truly unique. He does not have the emergency of sound of Fritz Wunderlich which is the other great version. 2 versions which complete each other. I would put this version in the same category of voice tone and musicality than Kathleen Ferrier.
@billyguns2 Oh, come on! Wunderlich comes close....was soll denn der Quatsch! WUNDERLICH!!!!
I first read your comment, expected a lot and then was disappointed listening to this fine singer.... Nobody comes even close to WUNDERLICH, that's for sure like nothing else....
Thank you very much Severolus for uploading this beautiful rendition. Do you have the reminder of the lieder sang by Schiotz? Would you upload them also? thanks for sharing this pleasure.

How lovely to have this from a beloved singer!
My first complete recordings of Dichterliebe [over 50 years ago] were by Schiotz, Husch and DFD: they are still my favourites.

The greatest Dichterliebe I have ever heard. Wunderlich comes close in his last public recital.

@billyguns2 As well as his second-to-last in Hannover (same year), which ironically, no one appears to know...

Lovely - thank you so much! Any chance for the rest of the cycle? And Schubert's Schöne Müllerin and other Lider?
