I have both of these and they are incredible cars. 335i with Dinan stg2 upgrade gives it a lot of nice torque but the M3 is still more of a "driver's" car. The 335i (sedan) isn't as pretty on the outside but way nicer (and 6 yrs newer) on the inside. The 335i is a better DD/road trip car but I'm gonna have a hard time selling either when I get the itch for something new.
My old E46 M3 had terrible suspensions for daily use but good corners I must admit. You can go thru some bumpy roads with the E46 M3 and you'll know what I'm talking about.
I've test drive the 335i and it seems a bit too heavy but more comfort compare to the old car. The sport suspension still give you nice corners but without the instant shock on bumpy roads.
Are you guys tards? there is no passenger in the M3 whereas the 335i had a fat passenger with video camera. m3 pulled on it that much because of this. Put the passenger in the M3 and no passenger in the 335i and you will see 335i slightly pull on it. both should be very very close stock for stock with no passengers. you guys are newb...
I loved the N54 in my 135i, but things such as oil that didn't take long to overheat, no LSD from the factory, throttle lag (not to be confused with turbo lag), and a suspension setup for run flats made mall out of love. I miss the turbo torque and some of the modern touches of the E8/9Xs, but there is something about an M car STOCK that at least for me makes me happier than any new BMW (the E9X M3s excluded). There is an aura to M cars and I don't regret the "downgrade" to an E46 M3.
Enjoy having your oil overheat after just a couple of laps in the 335i. NA engines are better for the track. The M3 is a true track car. The 335i is a blvd cruiser.
335i is fast, really fast and comparable to e46 m3 in a straight line, but E46 M3 is just better handling, sharper, firmer suspension and everything else. Both are great car, but in the end of day, I would walk away with E46 M3....wait, i just did that last month :D
thats m3 has more than just intakes and a a stock 335i is faster than the e46 M3 not just in a straigh line even in the track,( dont believe me lock it up ) or the 335i's driver didnt know how to drive
I think most of you are missing the point. If you want to spend many more $, then get an M3, but for the price a 335i is fantastically fast. Also, the 335 is a 3.0.
Good video, looks like the 335 lifted just as the M3 was overtaking tho. I have an e46 M3 and my brother has a 335(2 door all wheel drive 6sp). Off the line, the 335 is very quick, barely any turbo lag. The M3 is a lot harder to launch. From third gear on, the M3 is faster and when the 335 has to shift to 4th, the M3 is still pulling hard in 3rd.
Both are great cars and fast in a straight line but they drive very differently. When it comes down to the actual experience, 335 = :) but the M3 = :D
I’m happy with my 328i, but the only performance mods are sport suspection and the Signature Motoring performance intake for about $150. Signature Motoring kit adds around 11HP on the dyno, great sound, and the best performance upgrade for the money. See my channel videos!
-Adds 9-11 HP
-Never replace filter again (uses K&N filter)
-GREAT SOUND
-Installs in maybe 30-45 min. K&N filter lasts a lifetime.
@demoskunk Apparently a lot of people care that are looking to boost their HP in their E46s because I get like 4-6 messages a day requesting info. Most E46 enthusiasts know that the Signature Motoring intake is the first and easiest performance option to go for. I mean for like $170 you can get up to 13HP gain in teh 330 and a bit less for the 325/328. Cheers!
@dean0681 I am not reading anything. But you obviously think the 335i makes the advertised power. There was this dude at Qualcomm a month back and he had an 07 335i. He added a JB3 and had full race exhaust as well as some intake from a company I have never heard of. He claimed that he made an extra 70horsepower from the tune so he was making about 370hp. I told him, no you are making roughly 410hp and probably making the same amount of torque as well. He ran a 12.7@115mph LOL was he you?
@dean0681 you do realise the 335i dynos as much as cars with roughly 330-340bhp right? The advertised power numbers by BMW are not true for the 135i, 335i, or 535i. It makes more like 340BHP stock. YOU should check the forum to see that. My friend's 335i dynod 5 more rwhp than my stock 370z rated 332 horsepower from the factory. This is no secret. The 335i is a fast car no doubt, but its not a 300hp/300ft-lbs car either.
The E46 looks much more robust than the E36 IMHO. I would put in the Signature Motoring performance intake kit for only around $150 and gain up to 13HP on the stock output for the 330i and a bit less for the 325 and 328. I highly recommend this item, see my youtube channel for the action video on it.
@dean0681 Have fun with your turbos blowing up from the lack of turbo oil coolers, and all the other recalls. ill take the m3... only recall i found was a window regulator. ha... m3 used for 20g hpf turbo kit for 13g(yes 13 look it up) and 650rwhp and still cheaper than a new 335i(40g)
@dean0681 I never said you had to reach "proper" power by turbocharging. Proper is a subjective term. I think my Z4M is perfect out of the box. If all I cared about was 60-130 mph pulls, I'd boost it. $6k for 445 hp via ESS. If you're obsessed with power, you should live in America where we invented drag racing and base our Mustangs, Camaros, and Challangers around it. I prefer a balanced car that handles well and is a joy to drive - my reasoning in buying a Bimmer.
@dean0681 I will continue to have "lifed" in reality and agree to disagree. I do believe the 335i is an excellent road car - that's its purpose, and it does it well. The M3 is also a better track car, like you said. However, one thing you're forgetting is torque multiplication by running a lower gear set. If an engine red lines 15% higher, it can be geared lower to achieve the same top speed in each gear. BTW the S54 does make its posted numbers on a dyno, no doubt about it. Both are great!
@dean0681 You must defy the laws of physics up in the UK. In that case I'm sorry; I didn't realize turbo engines don't get hot and require oil coolers, or that aluminum was a stronger block material than iron. But back here in reality, we know you can't tune just anything for 1000 hp. A boosted S54 holds the BMW record for 60-130 pulls. A supercharger and intercooler will run you less than $10k from ESS, and net well over 500 hp... 500 hp that won't die out after 10 min on a track.
@dean0681 There's a reason there are 1000 hp S54s and no 1000 hp 335s. The S54 is a masterpiece. A chipped 335 can do one thing - highway pulls until it overheats. The S54 can run all day on a track without breaking a sweat, and if you want to boost it you can get over 500-600 hp safely on stock internals. It's too bad BMW has abandoned the true enthusiasts by replacing a built naturally aspirated engine in its M cars with a turbocharged engine.
@dean0681 and m3s have lsdiffs and 335i's dont, end of argument, that right there that makes 335i suck, and i would never own one, out of warranty that car will destroy you bank account if something goes wrong, and it will
@M3tor2nR7 Amen. U cant compare n/a cars to f/i cars. Boost the m.. the 335i is out of luck. and chipping a 335i to lay any more power than its already putting out with out an lsd makes no sense at all except to have bragging rights. not to hate on the 335i it is a nice car and probably a better daily driver. but if u want performance the M is king
First off, the E46 M3 does 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 13.1 seconds at 106mph. Around any given track, the E46 M3 always laps faster than a 335i. Has better power curve, more agressive gear ratio's, lighter weight, and an LSD. Two completely different vehicles. Drive on back to back and you can instantly tell the M3 was bred for racing, whereas the 335i is a fast cruiser. 335i isn't as nearly as responsive, crisp or agile as the M3 is.
@M3tor2nR7 I'd like to see this race again except with no passenger in the 335. I'll give you that the M3 is better on the track and it may be slightly quicker stock in a straight line but how far will $500 get you in the M3 ? In the 335i it will get you easily in the 12's in the 1/4 and 0-60 in high 3's.
@dean0681 all im saying is that a turboed cars power curve is not as effective as a well built naturally aspirated, and quit believing everything you read, i never said the 335i was a sloth, im saying that its not going to out perform the m3 on a track stock for stock. also the m3 will give you better driver response, and if all you care about is straight line power from a turbo engine, get a car that is actually cost effective to go fast in a straight line.
@dean0681 lmao. do you know why it revs that high? it keeps a very solid power/torque curve, the 335i is street sedan with a big amount of power, that doesnt make it better or faster, its how the power is used. try takin that 335i through a curvy road faster than that m3, and a heavily modded m3 is going to flat out kill a modded 335i. ever heard of an hpf m3? the m3 is made to race, while the 335i is made to be a daily driven business mans car, congrats you can go fast in a straight line.
LOL u guys are dumb. There is NO WAY that M3 pulls like THAT in 3rd GEAR. first of all u have to rev the shit out of an M3 to get max HP/TQ. And just a little info for you morons: Fastest 1/4 mile time 2002 M3 (stock) = 13.485@103.750 fastest STOCK 335xi (heavier AWD model) = 13.400@102.800 now tell me that M3 pulled how he did... Fuckin fanboys...
@Vchenzo335ix whats the problem with revving up so high? im glad that your able to just go to wikipedia and rely on everything it says to try and prove that the 335i is somehow better than a m3. why wouldnt you want to rev that high and keep continuously making power smoothly and effectively? it clearly has a much better top end which makes all the difference in the world if your racing on the street like this. plus take that m3 down a very curvy road and that 335i will be so far behind...
@Vchenzo335ix lol just because 3359 has a TT set up doesn't make it fast. Its better to have the instant response of an N/A with a good torque curve than have to wait a second for the turbos to spool up than another split second for them to max out. The only thing the 335i has is its I-6 engine which, like the Supra, has a great power curve. If it was a V-6 it would be totally different. Plus the damn 335i is actually rated closer to 340hp/340tq even Steve Dinan admits that.
If you want the best BMW you buy an M series, just like if you want the best BENZ you buy an AMG. It's not just HP and TQ, it's better overall suspension and braking too. My clk55 amg was nasty. I'm actually looking for a 335i for a daily driver. And that's exactly what it is. You can get a fairly quick car, with decent room inside, even get a 4 door with all wheel drive (xi model). And they look good......but it's not an M3.
I fucken Hate 335's that think they can be better than an M3. If you wanna be better than an M3 buy an M3 and put some HPF on it or some shit. A regualr 3 series will never beat a damn M3. So stop fooling around with your daily town car guys and get a reak mans car like an M3.
@M3tor2nR7: agreed!! I went for a test drive in a 335i (E90) when it first came out and the sales manager I spoke with indicated that the E46 M3 would start to walk the 335i at higher speeds.
@M3tor2nR7 Yeah, I agree. Kids seem to always think that just because a car comes equipped with a turbo(S) that it will be easy to swap a bigger one in for more power.
The JB3 tuned 335i will beat the stock M3 any day. I had both. The 335i is are really chill car great for everyday driving. My e46 M3 could out handle anything I ever raced. Every time I got behind the wheel I felt like I was on a track- 0 body roll even through twisties at 80mph. The stage 2 dinan and full exhaust topped it off. Too bad its sold now.
Ok Let me tell everyone that thinks the 335 is faster then the M3. U ARE WRONG!. The M3 is way faster the 335 just had a better jump. If u look at the end of trhe video the M3 layed it down and left him like he was standing still. I have a 2005 M3 and have raced just about all of the 3 class and none of them can keep up. I live in washington if anyone needs a good ass kicking.
The M3 is made for the race track with turns. An M5 is made for the autobahn. A 335i/ci is made for street driving. Yeah it might accelerate almost like an M3 but it will never drive like an M3. Cannot compare in lateral acceleration or braking. Ive seen tuned 335's at road courses theyre weak and always overheat after a good open track session, they dont even have a limited slip diff.
M3 is a sports car and the 335 is a really good street car. I think 335s are better in automatic too.
@PDIddier very true, ive taken my 335 to the track and overheating is a big problem. I only got through about 15 minutes of my 20 minute sessions before i got limited power and had to just ease it through a few laps before i brought it in. about a 95 degree day to be fair, but no other car including a DB9, 350z, Porsche 911 and a srt-10 viper, had that problem.
@PDIddier Ever heard of M-package? Half price for the same car if you tune the 335i! You could even throw in a shit load of chassies upgrade and have a better track machine for less than a stock M3!!!
@MrRobbanHG m sport still dont have M differential. M3 is essentially a car built for the track. Quite naive to think u can build a better track car than the M division at BMW.
@KS873081 Read Quaife LSD... I still say that the M3 is some what a badge, add 10000USD on the 335 and it´s still less than 3/4 of an M3, but definitly 100% M3 performance++
@lllSubmit.. your entirely neglecting the fact that your warranty is now gone.. and when the stock turbos crap out on you.. which WILL happen, your SOL.
Buy a 335i mod it, enjoy it, and then sell it.. don't plan on driving that thing for 100k like you can do with an e46 M3.
@is300cb when the turbos crap out then its time for a turbo upgrade which will net me even more power... you could always buy an HPF stage 1 or 2 kit for 14k-20k for the same performance... oh wait not even because youll be making the same power on a stage 1 but the m3 would be a single turbo not twin so it takes longer to build power
Not sure what your arguing here.. I talking about the power that can be made on a 335i will not be reliable for the life of the car, while an M3 can be driven for over 100k with no problems. With the JB3 software and whatnot, your pushing the stock twins to their max capacity.
As far as single turbos go on the M3.. as long as the hotside a/r's aren't ridiculous the turbo lag will be negligible.. the 2 cars will make power differently, the 335 more linearly, and the M3 more peaky.
Your argument is irrelevant, you think that when the turbos start to wear out the car is now dead and will never be the same and its unfixable? No that would just be an excuse to get even bigger turbos and more power or just buy the stock ones again... you make no sense.
I make no sense? You make no sense.. Your points are have no relevance to what I am saying..
I'm not saying that car is unfixable
I'm not saying that the car will never be the same
I'm not even commenting on the cost
ALL I am saying is to make the 335 faster pushes the STOCK turbo's to their maximum capacities. All I am saying is that to make the 335 a M3 beater pushes the cars stock turbos past their intended outputs.. directly effecting long term reliability.
correct me if i am wrong, but i do believe the person who posted the video drives the 335i, not the m3, because the m3 does not have wood paneling, and the other car, the white one, has the m3 labeling on the back, so, this would contradict the description of the video, whoever posted isnt driving the m3, they lost because they were driving the 335i, which makes sense, because an m3 would anniahalate it
Friends...friends...M3...335...we're all in agreement that these bitches ROCK! Pointless to banter about which mods make which car faster...there's always a way to make one faster than the other. ///M Power is ///M Power...simple as that. I have and love my 335...but when the opp to get the ///M3 presents...I WILL TAKE IT. Having said that...the 335 is definitely a sleeper....that is...while perhaps a step behind the M3...it kicks serious ass - when needed just about everywhere else.
thats impressive considering your running wider tires and a practically stock set up in the m3. i'm willing to bet that that oem 18's on 255's will pull even farther from the 335i.
Yes, an E46 M3 is faster than a 335i. I've yet lost to one. Both from a stop, a roll, a highway race or around a twisty road, the M3 is faster and will be ahead. Especially above 3rd gear.
If you want to launch a 335i well rev it to 1,500 rpms. The 335i has more torque than the M3 E46. Revving it beyond 2,000rpm won't help, causing wheel spin or DTC will kick in. --Reference- Proud 08' E92 335i owner.
AWH just add a jb3 pnp, a code 3 intercooler, riss downpipes and catback and dual injen intake- filters. It will be an m3 killer. Although i also like m3's. But 2 turbos with a straight six is sex!
335i actually handles much better than a c63, nobody denies that. Plus, the c63 is way more expensive. If you wanna compare, compare the c63 to the new M3.
@TMCDarkmaster lmao and no its not... it will own the e46 m3 (06 and down) but it doesnt stand a chance vs the e92(07 and up) m3....the m3 has better handling acceleration and it just feels athletic...ive driven both...the c63 just has a big lazy powerful v8 and the rear tires cant hold down the power so u just get terrible handling
you guys really underestimate what a 335i can do, especially when its chipped. just because it doesn't have all the flare (fenders, gills) like an m3 does doesn't mean its not a contender.
I have an e92 m3 with G-power Supercharger, and no 335i can come anywhere near me... not even close, I do own a 135i with v3 chip, downpipes and AFE intake, and its a good litlte thing for what it is... particularly in Australia where the 335i is 130k the m3 is 170k and the 135i is only 80k... great bang for your bucks... but my 135i just doesnt have the finesse or stability anywhere near that of the m3.
boosted m3? do you realise how much money that will take and how much time , not inlcuding how reliable your engine is gonna be. you would also have to change a few other things.
335i+jb3+downpipes+intake=e92 m3 ass raper. best bang for the buck peace
I have both of these and they are incredible cars. 335i with Dinan stg2 upgrade gives it a lot of nice torque but the M3 is still more of a "driver's" car. He ran a 12.7@115mph LOL was he you?

turbotdi2002 1 year ago

-Installs in round 45min.
-Guaranteed HP increase
-Induction sound to die for
-Awesome fit/finish.
See my video of how it sounds AND performs!

@dean0681 Have fun with your turbos blowing up from the lack of turbo oil coolers, and all the other recalls. ill take the m3... only recall i found was a window regulator. ha... m3 used for 20g hpf turbo kit for 13g(yes 13 look it up) and 650rwhp and still cheaper than a new 335i(40g)
joshluvsdani 1 year ago
@dean0681 I never said you had to reach "proper" power by turbocharging. Proper is a subjective term. I think my Z4M is perfect out of the box. If all I cared about was 60-130 mph pulls, I'd boost it. $6k for 445 hp via ESS. If you're obsessed with power, you should live in America where we invented drag racing and base our Mustangs, Camaros, and Challangers around it. I prefer a balanced car that handles well and is a joy to drive - my reasoning in buying a Bimmer.
stephenmtnbay 1 year ago
@dean0681 I will continue to have "lifed" in reality and agree to disagree. I do believe the 335i is an excellent road car - that's its purpose, and it does it well. The M3 is also a better track car, like you said. However, one thing you're forgetting is torque multiplication by running a lower gear set. If an engine red lines 15% higher, it can be geared lower to achieve the same top speed in each gear. BTW the S54 does make its posted numbers on a dyno, no doubt about it. Both are great!
stephenmtnbay 1 year ago
@dean0681 You must defy the laws of physics up in the UK. In that case I'm sorry; I didn't realize turbo engines don't get hot and require oil coolers, or that aluminum was a stronger block material than iron. But back here in reality, we know you can't tune just anything for 1000 hp. A boosted S54 holds the BMW record for 60-130 pulls. A supercharger and intercooler will run you less than $10k from ESS, and net well over 500 hp... 500 hp that won't die out after 10 min on a track.
stephenmtnbay 1 year ago
@dean0681 There's a reason there are 1000 hp S54s and no 1000 hp 335s. The S54 is a masterpiece. A chipped 335 can do one thing - highway pulls until it overheats. The S54 can run all day on a track without breaking a sweat, and if you want to boost it you can get over 500-600 hp safely on stock internals. It's too bad BMW has abandoned the true enthusiasts by replacing a built naturally aspirated engine in its M cars with a turbocharged engine.

Thats an M3 mate... M power RULES
kamransaeed1587 1 year ago
@dean0681

SCTitan06 11 months ago
@dean0681 all im saying is that a turboed cars power curve is not as effective as a well built naturally aspirated, and quit believing everything you read, i never said the 335i was a sloth, im saying that its not going to out perform the m3 on a track stock for stock. also the m3 will give you better driver response, and if all you care about is straight line power from a turbo engine, get a car that is actually cost effective to go fast in a straight line.
petoria0013 1 year ago
@dean0681 lmao. do you know why it revs that high? it keeps a very solid power/torque curve, the 335i is street sedan with a big amount of power, that doesnt make it better or faster, its how the power is used. try takin that 335i through a curvy road faster than that m3, and a heavily modded m3 is going to flat out kill a modded 335i. ever heard of an hpf m3? the m3 is made to race, while the 335i is made to be a daily driven business mans car, congrats you can go fast in a straight line.

@Vchenzo335ix where do you get your silly info? You yourself are the fanboy, look at your screen name. Calm down.
silverstreak328 1 year ago
@Vchenzo335ix whats the problem with revving up so high? im glad that your able to just go to wikipedia and rely on everything it says to try and prove that the 335i is somehow better than a m3. why wouldnt you want to rev that high and keep continuously making power smoothly and effectively? it clearly has a much better top end which makes all the difference in the world if your racing on the street like this. plus take that m3 down a very curvy road and that 335i will be so far behind...
petoria0013 1 year ago

Mazda6B6 2 years ago
The M3 is made for the race track with turns. An M5 is made for the autobahn. A 335i/ci is made for street driving. Yeah it might accelerate almost like an M3 but it will never drive like an M3. Cannot compare in lateral acceleration or braking. Ive seen tuned 335's at road courses theyre weak and always overheat after a good open track session, they dont even have a limited slip diff.
M3 is a sports car and the 335 is a really good street car. I think 335s are better in automatic too.
PDIddier 2 years ago 21
Yes you're right. M models are exceptional sports cars. I love driving our M6.
Mazda6B6 2 years ago
@PDIddier very true, ive taken my 335 to the track and overheating is a big problem. I only got through about 15 minutes of my 20 minute sessions before i got limited power and had to just ease it through a few laps before i brought it in. about a 95 degree day to be fair, but no other car including a DB9, 350z, Porsche 911 and a srt-10 viper, had that problem.
Healbatto 1 year ago

ok spend 500$ on a chip and your spanking the m3 like it wasnt even moving.. average of 90-100rwhp gains from this chip ALONE
lllSubmit 2 years ago
@lllSubmit.. your entirely neglecting the fact that your warranty is now gone.. and when the stock turbos crap out on you.. which WILL happen, your SOL.
Buy a 335i mod it, enjoy it, and then sell it.. don't plan on driving that thing for 100k like you can do with an e46 M3.
is300cb 2 years ago 3
@is300cb when the turbos crap out then its time for a turbo upgrade which will net me even more power... you could always buy an HPF stage 1 or 2 kit for 14k-20k for the same performance... oh wait not even because youll be making the same power on a stage 1 but the m3 would be a single turbo not twin so it takes longer to build power
lllSubmit 2 years ago
@IIISubmit
Not sure what your arguing here.. I talking about the power that can be made on a 335i will not be reliable for the life of the car, while an M3 can be driven for over 100k with no problems. With the JB3 software and whatnot, your pushing the stock twins to their max capacity.
As far as single turbos go on the M3.. as long as the hotside a/r's aren't ridiculous the turbo lag will be negligible.. the 2 cars will make power differently, the 335 more linearly, and the M3 more peaky.
is300cb 2 years ago
Your argument is irrelevant, you think that when the turbos start to wear out the car is now dead and will never be the same and its unfixable? No that would just be an excuse to get even bigger turbos and more power or just buy the stock ones again... you make no sense.
lllSubmit 2 years ago
And I am assuming you don't own either car because replacing the stock turbos is not cheap..
is300cb 2 years ago
like i said i would upgrade the turbos for little over 1k
lllSubmit 2 years ago
btw i can replace the turbos on my own not that expensive....
lllSubmit 2 years ago
I make no sense? You make no sense.. Your points are have no relevance to what I am saying..
I'm not saying that car is unfixable
I'm not saying that the car will never be the same
I'm not even commenting on the cost
ALL I am saying is to make the 335 faster pushes the STOCK turbo's to their maximum capacities. All I am saying is that to make the 335 a M3 beater pushes the cars stock turbos past their intended outputs.. directly effecting long term reliability.
is300cb 2 years ago
