  • Very useful video , i will be using this for painting my car i 2 coats, thank you!

  • Wow! What a brill finish, well done.

  • lovely job !

  • thanks

  • thanks for the valuable demo , i will be using that exelent tecnique next week [once the sandings done] many thanks and wish me luck lol

    thanks again lee

  • @leecjoe Hi, If there is any breeze or wind you have to do smaller areas......... If you can find someone to roll whilst you do the 'Laying off' that is much easier. Lastly keep the dry brush very slightly damp with thinners so you don't get a build up of paint on it. If you are working on your own keep it in a folded damp cloth to stop it drying. Good luck !

  • @leecjoe What did you start doing at 2:05 that got rid of all the White areas left in the green?

    A gelcoat of some sort???

I'm getting ready to paint a new boat very soon and all help would be appreciated thanks!!

  • That was inspiring..i'm a decorator by trade (10yrs) and have never seen anything of such quality! Craftsmen such as yourself are few and far between!

  • @bargiepat it looks like your getting an excellent finish with your technique, but your laying off strokes don't seem to start at the very bottom of the panel they seem to start an inch or so up. Do you find the paint sometimes sags of runs at the very bottom?? Was just wondering as I was taught to paint in a similar way except I was alway tx to finish on a downward stroke. Just interested to see if it makes a difference. But again excellent job!!

  • @Rokera7x Hi,

Going up was the best way on this job for two reasons................. At the bottom the gunwales project about 100mm so the brush could not be kept at the correct angle . Also by going up you are not dragging paint from the sharp top edge where you want it to stay. Hope that makes sense.

  • why dont u just use some krylon spray cans

  • hi there please can you help me =( i have some 2 pack paint that is 2 parts paint 1 part hardner and a little thinners. i want to use it on a canal boat so is this the same paint as yours or is your paint an intiyerly diffrent makeup?

also if it is not the same paint then can you suggest somwhere i can buy or order this paint from and what is it called please =)

    kind regards gaz

  • @kezmaticks160885

    Hi ,

Totally different from 2 pack paint. Search for International Toplac on Google.

    Good luck.

  • @bargiepat hi thanks for the info would you beleve it ive got a boat at cowroast merenah , tring and theres a boat shop there and thay sell toplac there lol but when you strike the paint with the brush is the brush dipped in thinners to get the smoth affect or is it a dry brush??? this is the last piece of the puzzle and then ime set =) so plese help and many thanks already =)

also the boat is called nudge nudge it was in the canal boat magazine not long ago lol

  • @kezmaticks160885 Hi, The dry brush can have a little thinners on it but well shaken off ........ after some time it pics up a liitle paint that can be removed with thinners on a cloth. Also after the stroking of each area cover it with a piice of cloth soaked in thinners to keep it just moist. You will soon get the hang of it and good luck. Remember work fast and light stokes. If you can have a helper, one of you applies the paint and the other 'lays off' it is so much easier.

  • Hey sir,

    First... Semi Gloss Green

    Sec... Thinner Y333

go to Roller and dry brush... I am RIGHT OR WRONG?? Please let me know thanks

  • @1980power1

HIGH GLOSS.........Toplac is a premium gloss marine enamel for all substrates above the waterline. It is exceptionally easy to apply by brush or roller and pad and contains UV filter for increased durability.

    * Excellent flow characteristics

    * Range of bright colours

    * Over twice the life of ordinary alkyd enamels

Its unique chemical structure enables Toplac to outperform traditional finishes giving a long lasting high definition gloss.

    USE NUMBER 1 Thinners...........

  • can u guess what it is yet

  • Hi BargiePat, Could you kindly tell me how the simulated mohair roller differs from high density foam gloss rollers, I ask because I aim to paint my van using a roller and rustoleum paint and was wondering if the mohair roller would give a better finish.

    thank you and warmest regards

    Martin

  • @austinmaxi555 Hi Martin, I have only used the Mohair and not the foam so I can't help you. Maybe worth trying both to experiment, I suspect the foam is not as good. Regards, Patrick.

  • @austinmaxi555 You want to paint your van? Like a van one drives on the road? A road vehicle has many shapes and curves and stuff. There isn't a flat panel anywhere and, in my opinion, any method other than spraying under suitable conditions, is impractical if you want a decent finish.

  • lol. that is the worst paint job ive ever seen anyone do. hahahhaha

  • Comment removed

  • @0richeym Can you do better? Most people who see the finished result of work like this think it's been sprayed. I trained as a coachpainter. I'd like ot see the average joe paint any vertical surface with gloss paint and not make a balls up of it. It's a skill. Notice how the final lay off in vertical. That way the paint will flow out but won't sag and run.

  • @SONOR4 Yes i can do better, I work for a boat builder and have professionally painted around 30 boats. It might look like a half decent finish through your computer screen, however he is applying it unevenly and over a vast space asking for terrible dry edges (where there are noticeable joins from where he starts and finishes.

One of the main issues with the way hes doing this is laying off horizontally when it should be vertically to catch the sunlight giving a nice shine.

    good day.

  • @0richeym His lay off IS VERTICAL. And he may be working to wet edges, it's impossible to say. If it's a good paint (I use Tekaloid) he will be able to work this size of surface with wet edges. He is applying the paint via roller horizontally, but the important LAY OFF IS DEFO VERTICAL. You rightly say the computer screen doesn't give a good image, so how can YOU judge his work? Give him a break, and don't be so judgemental.

  • @SONOR4 are you a complete IDIOT. see i can write in capitals too!

Anyone with a set of eyes and understands the difference between vertical and horizontal can see its HORIZONTAL!

As it says in the intro he is using international toplac which have have used hundreds of times and the wet edge does not stay wet for long in any tempreture.

Just take it from someone who knows, this is not the correct way of painting a boat!

  • @0richeym Anyone can claim to be a painter - if you want to impress people, you can upload a video of your own work. Yes?

  • @FairyArk shut up you self righteous twat. all i know is im better than this bloke.

  • @0richeym Show us your skill, I double dog dare you to reveal your talent in painting to the internet. :)

  • @FairyArk my god you really are a loser.

im too busy painting properly to make stupid videos.

  • @0richeym Right! You feel free to let us Netizens know when you have a video to display your talent as this man does. It is good work on his part.

  • @0richeym you really are a Troll aren't you, if you are too busy painting how come you keep commenting ?

  • @0richeym I'm starting to dispair about you. This bloke's final lay off IS VERTICAL!!!!! - VERTICAL AS IN STRAIGHT UP. VERTICAL AS IN VERTICAL TAKE OFF HARRIER JUMP JET. NOT HORIZONTAL - AS IN SIDE TO SIDE. AS IN HORIZON. You need glasses and a dictionary. I await your next offensive judgemental self righteous reply. But before that, look at 2.30 onwards. I repeat - straight up, vertical lay off. This fella has had the balls to show his work.. Now let's see yours.

  • @SONOR4 right you complete moron.

anyone who paint like you claim to knows that you should ideally lay the paint off in one stroke.

it would be completely noticeable with this paint job that he has gone over and over with it.

  • @0richeym You were so keen to put everybody down a while ago. Now it's all quiet from Oricheym. Perhaps because you clearly don't know what the word vertical means. Or what the phrase lay off means. Begining to doubt you've ever painted anything in your life. So c'mon show us all how good you really are. Upload some of your amazing work. Can't wait. Do Rolls Royce cars know about you? Clearly they should stop production, and only restart when you,and only you are painting their cars for them.

  • @SONOR4 look, you dont have a clue so just fuck off.

a typical narrow boater id imagine.

  • @0richeym Shame you have to be so offensive. I'm not a narrow boater. I live on dry land and I'm a qualified coach painter. Would still like to see your work. I will endeavour to post some images of my most recent project - a restored fire engine.

  • @rightfredsdead Roof is cream to keep the sun off .........

  • @rightfredsdead That is the undercoat.......... Top coat is Black.

  • @rightfredsdead And you never got to see the paint dry.................

  • This is a really invaluable video, thanks for showing us all how its done. What a superb finish you got there. Great stuff.

  • Use a extention pole no need to bend over

  • what type of paint did you use?

  • @zxvcw International paints ..... Toplac.

  • @bargiepat hiya fella good job on the boat. love the finish and the colour so much i would like your advice on painting my van this way. is this possible. it is metal and glass fibre. would this work ? what is the exact colour you are useing there and where could i get some. how much etc. any help or advice would be great. thanks.

  • Thank you - really nervous putting the final coat on - did you use any thinner/addatives if so what type. i've decided to paint the same way as you - great vid and cheers

  • Great job - is it a short hair roller ? cheers

  • @martinda2k

    YES, A simulated mohair roller...........

  • Great vid. Will be attempting this on my own boat in coming weeks. Cheers for the lesson.

  • Buy a compressor and a spray gun is better.

  • Impressive.

  • Wow that brush realy does the trick.

  • I'll bet a pint that you are using is a nice oil based enamel paint. We aren't allowed to have nice paints like that here in the U.S. Everything is water based, except for very expensive 2-part epoxy type paints used on cars, and even those are waterbased.

  • IN the US you can find quality oil based marine paint. Off hand I can think of Interlux Yacht Enamel and Rustoleum Marine Enamel. These are both oil based with the Rustoleum being a very good paint for the money.

  • Hi Patrick Dumb question coming up. Im intrigued with the narrow boats. I did see some while in England in 1970 but we dont have them in Australia. How did you get from Lancaster canal to the Pool of London? By Canal? Are they able to go in the sea? Sorry for dumb questions? Jan-

  • best painting i have seen in many a year there

  • So this is the last 1 percent of the job, with 99 percent in preparation eh?

  • Sterling work there, a lovely mirror finish!!! Not sure about the size of the lettering for the name, but each to their own, superb job!!! :D

  • Fantastic, can you nip round and do mine now !

  • @jazzyjeph No kidding, I have a canoe that could use a nice update.

  • This paintwork is 20 times better than my brand new £130,000 boat! Fabulous demonstration. Super job!

  • brillinat. love the tech. great finish!!+++++++++
