@kimrayjung12 Almost right :) Filipijnen. It's pronounced as fielipijne(n), it can be annoying sometimes because the "biet" vowel is sometimes written the same as the "bit" vowel, like here. Most of the Dutch people don't pronounce the final n.

Your videos are great. I'm spending a few months in the Amsterdam area from March, simply because I have a bit of spare time between jobs here in the UK and I really like the Netherlands and its way of life. I'd love to learn some more Dutch while I'm there, though whenever I've visited, locals immediately switch to English upon realising I'm British. I've a lot of respect for your widespread multilingualism, but how would you recommend I counteract this so I can practice my Dutch?

@dabillybombom I think the best strategy is to just tell people you'd like them to speak Dutch :) Lots of people come across this problem, though. I guess we love showing off our language skills a little too much.

Oh, BTW, @dutchforn00bs , I've heard many times while searching on the net about dutch that the dutch hate or don't like it when you call the netherlands, holland. Is that true and how did this come about that people called your country holland?

@ZeldaWindWaker50 Holland is an area in the Netherlands (Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland are 2 of our provinces). It's been the most populated, and economically most successful part of the country for a few centuries now, which (I think) is why lots of people know the entire country as Holland. I don't mind either name, but it's true that some people don't like Holland as a name.. since they don't really live there :) It's similar to telling a Scottish person he lives in England.

It kinda like belgium (Belgie). So that makes, Brazil = Brazilie. Bra - zi - li - e.

In sounds: Brrrr (as in being cold and shaking) - ah (suprised) - zi (as in new ZEAland) - lee (chinese name) - uh (like you're thinking realy hard)

Actually, this ain't a hard language at all, BTW, dutchforn00bs, really nice video and I commented on your other video. I commented again. Sorry. But, have you learned german? Because the two languages are very similar. Like Frankrijk (Dutch) and Frankreich (German) sound exactly the same. Try learning German if you're a pro at dutch. I'll keep watching so I can learn Dutch.

@ZeldaWindWaker50 Dutch and German are almost the same . Some German words does look like Dutch words . In the most times it means the same . If you rule Dutch , you can rule German too ^^ German won't be difficult for you then :D btw , i'm Dutch :)

are you swedish (assumed for the heart)? I going for Netherlands for one year and I am Swedish . Is it possible to learn tspeaking Dutch in a year? Learning languages isnt really my strongest subject. :/

@harboee No, I'm Dutch (see flag. and the language I'm speaking). The heart for Swedish was because I was learning Swedish at the time :D As for learning Dutch in a year.. because Swedish and Dutch are pretty similar, it should be possible to get a good grasp of written Dutch in a couple of months. Learning to speak it, though, is a lot harder. I think if you study really hard, and practice a lot it should be possible to understand&talk to people in a year :)

The funny thing is; teaching someone standard Dutch is not really efficient. No problem if you go to the Netherlands, but it is if you go to Flanders.

There are even separate courses on how to speak West-Vlaams... :) Otherwise newly immigrants wouldn't understand a thing, even with perfect Dutch!

"Ik kom uit" would be in West-Vlaanderen " 'k Bennekik van"...

@alexveeuk Afrikaans and Dutch is actually the same language but the difference is that Afrikaans is actually something like a dialect from the Dutch language. In Holland everyone can speak Dutch but not perfectly. This is because of Dialects. So Dutch is nothing more then the basic language in Holland and then every region also has it's own dutch (dialect) I live in the east and our Dialect can be used in Germany.
