  • In my case, it's a violation of my dignity and rights and the machine gets my blood boiling. As well as the more that we put up with, the more of a police state we will become. Did you know you have more of a chance of being hit by a car crossing the street then being blown up in a airplane. More people die from pharmaceuticals that are FDA approved. etc.

    What we want to have is an aristocratic representative republic. That's what the framers of the Constitution tried to build.

    Though intense security scans might prevent bombings, they might not be worth it. Sometimes extreme rationality is not reasonable at all.

    No direct election of the President (electoral college) or the Senate (appointed by State Legislatures). Only the House of Representatives, elected every two years.

  • @jx14aby Well, there's not supposed to be direct elections, at least. Yes, technically there are still electors sent to the capitol for the frivolous ceremony of submitting votes. But what do the voters see on their ballot? The names of candidates they know nothing about. Hiding behind the candidates names are the electors.

    The electors are supposed to be locally-elected, as close to the community level as possible, and are given the charge of making good decisions for their constituents.

  • @jx14aby It seemed a lot more vital to Jefferson and company, back in the 18th century when communication was only as fast as a horse's gallop. You couldn't expect people all the way off in South Carolina to be hip with what was going on in Washington, or why the Pennsylvanian voters felt one way or another. They were too far away and mostly too busy working to survive. That's where the idea of sending the brightest local figure to government first originated.

    I'm a libertarian (lower case "L", since there's no real Australian Libertarian Party) and so I love democracy. I just wish that the LDP fielded candidates in my local/state/federal electorate. Alas, I'm stuck with scribbling "NO U" on my compulsory voting sheet. But I'm VERY careful with my Senate voting sheet, unlike most, I take the time to number the 60-odd senate candidates, unlike most Aussies who simply allow their preferred party allocate preferences.

    Well in Australia, with all our nice social democracy, I have a decent bearing on what a government can do right. For example, I can, at any time, go to a hospital and get treated for an emergency ailment for "free".     If you pull back government, you support private powers. 100% freedom doesn't exists. You alway have foreign power like big companies with their power of money or private military. You have just the option between democracy or anarchy and a choice between government and freedom doesn't exist. For many people democracy is more free.

    The TSA protects the freedom to live, in exchange for the freedom to choose who handles your balls. Simple. The Reasonoids simply ask the question "if we weren't having our junck caressed, would we REALLY be dying in a plane crash. R E A L L Y???" They suspect not.
