  • There was no Today Show perspective. Not only could they not hear what Dave was saying (they just heard some noise but could not make out what was said at all), but they weren't even taping the show at that point. You can tell from the movement around the set that they were not taping yet.

  • I'm not a Letterman fan, but not enough bad things can happen to Bryant Gumbel. He's an asshat!

  • oh yeah! AND I`M NOT WEARING PANTS!

  • I wanna see the other version of this!! The Today Show cameras obviously have this on film.

  • All the writers of that era have moved on, Chris Elliot, Merrill Markoe et al. These were quirky irreverent creatives who will unlikely be outdone. Hats off to the Late Show of the 1980's.

  • I really want to see the other end of this, what was going on during The Today Show.

  • @JacobDragyn Me too. Anyone here have access to the Today Show perspective of this?

  • he doesn't do this anymore cause he's the only one in the ed sullivan theatre, i think.

  • don't suppose anyone has a tape of the today show from this event? to get another persective?...ha

  • @DrLanceAngry That NEEDS to be put on youtube!

  • He was more funny on Nothing But Crap.

  • Did this make it on to the Today show or did they edit it out

  • Haha... He killed back in the NBC days...

  • Gumbel was such a self-important, humorless jackass. Just another guy who forgot he was a glorified enterntainer--not a protector of western civilization. He was only famous because he was on TV, not the other way around.

  • Don't forget folks when it comes to Bryant Gumble it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Huh Bry?

  • I believe Bryant Gumbel was very P.O.'ed at Dave Letterman because of his stunt.

  • Comment removed

  • he should do this every show

  • This add is the size of a beach towel, rofl.

  • Hilarious!! What a legend....

  • Man, I love when Letterman's a dick.

  • Here Here! Letterman is at his best when he is mean, angry, and anti-social.

  • @ elperromagico, yes he IS! He uses himself to have some fun in his studio with women, nice character!

  • Inadvertently, does anybody remember what Bryant Gumbel was talking about on the show that specific day? Neither do I. Neither does Bryant Gumbel. Which just shows you what a pinhead he really is. No sense of humor, sincerity or perspective. He's not much missed.

  • Yeaaa, that guy was a big ass wuss who probably got picked on everyday while in grade school by guys like Dave.

    Wuuusss

  • you can see Gene Shallot's mustache from the top of the rock

  • Epic..seriously epic! Brilliant television..I wish there was more of this stuff on TV today. Today hosts and comedian mostly try to shock poeple with words and insults..no one actually does anything to take matters in their own hands. This clip is awsome!

  • I agree. This is seriously funny, intelligent TV.

  • LOL

  • lighten up dafrigidlady

  • Man, Dave had balls in those days didn't he? He can still be funny but only when he's pissed off. e.g. When McCain blew him off to do another interview his ranting and sarcasm was reminiscent of the old Dave.

  • Is there any clip from the Today Show when they film this. It would be fun to see it from their perspective.

  • I remember watching this - Christ, this was funny! It took Bryant YEARS to get over this. Letterman rules!!

  • letterman is a god

  • I wouldn't give Gumbel's problems TO A MONKEY ON A ROCK!!! We love you, Dave!

  • Dave, in his pre-castration days.

  • And Im not wearin pants!!! Damn!!!5

  • OMG I can't believe he did this! TOO funny!

  • Absolutely fucking hilarious!

  • The guy that turns his head at 1:16, is that Gene Shalit?

  • Gumble who ?

    Dave rules !!!!!!!!!

  • Gumbel's gonna bust your ass Dave.

    lol

  • LAMAO!

  • fuck jay leno

  • I'm sorry: But Dave Belongs On NBC!!!

  • hahah thats a classic!

  • I watch clips of Late Night when David Letterman hosted in the 80's. Very funny shows. I think he inspired Conan O'Brien in a way. And in turn they both inspired the new host Jimmy Fallon.

  • she gave Dave the bird

  • lol "On with the tree lighting!"

  • Whos that woman next to Bryant Gumbel?

  • Jane Pauley

  • Conan's show is a carbon copy of Dave's show when he was in NBC.

  • Gumbel's a sucker

  • It was so much better then. Now, it's routine.

  • LOL

  • Thanks for posting this. I just read an article referring to this incident and wanted to see it for myself. Damn I love YouTube.

  • Me too! Exact same thing.

  • Wow! Me too, I was reading it in Wikipedia LOL

  • Hehe, Wikipedia + Youtube = Knowledge!

    Hehehehe.

  • That stinkin' one hour earlier. He has to play it so conservative now.

I miss irreverent Dave. Damn him and his fatherhood and his heart bypass anyway!!!

    (only kidding. :-D )

  • Why doesn't Dave do this kind of stuff anymore?

  • With the move to the Ed Sullivan Theater the ability to spontaneously interrupt other TV shows live during taping was lost. No more Live at Five across the hall. Now there's the Hello Deli.

  • Well, at 62 years of age, this sort of stuff doesn't scream maturity. But it still was pretty funny.

  • Virgin.

  • "scream maturity"

I bet you're the same type of person who "respects women", where at the end of the day you get treated like shit since you're a boring tramp

  • You bone head, my comment was in response to somebody who asked why Dave doesn't do this kind of thing anymore. My comment suggests that Dave is a more classier guy now because he's much older. I didn't suggest that this was funny at all. As an aside, I bet your the same type of person who "beat women", where at the end of the day you wind up in a patty wagon down the station.

  • @mikokat He did for a while at CBS and his ratings basically tanked and Leno's skyrocketed. He does do things like this to some degree though.

  • @mikokat - I've wondered that, too. I don't even watch him anymore. He seems old and tired. When he sits at his desk and talks, he looks down. I think it's kinda sad.

  • genius, huh?
