There was no Today Show perspective. Not only could they not hear what Dave was saying (they just heard some noise but could not make out what was said at all), but they weren't even taping the show at that point. You can tell from the movement around the set that they were not taping yet.
All the writers of that era have moved on, Chris Elliot, Merrill Markoe et al. These were quirky irreverent creatives who will unlikely be outdone. Hats off to the Late Show of the 1980's.
Gumbel was such a self-important, humorless jackass. Just another guy who forgot he was a glorified enterntainer--not a protector of western civilization. He was only famous because he was on TV, not the other way around.
Inadvertently, does anybody remember what Bryant Gumbel was talking about on the show that specific day? Neither do I. Neither does Bryant Gumbel. Which just shows you what a pinhead he really is. No sense of humor, sincerity or perspective. He's not much missed.
Epic..seriously epic! Brilliant television..I wish there was more of this stuff on TV today. Today hosts and comedian mostly try to shock poeple with words and insults..no one actually does anything to take matters in their own hands. This clip is awsome!

I like Dave generally but this strikes me as much more rude, disrespectful and unprofessional than funny. What he did here was not much different than people making faces or gesturing wildly behind a reporter reporting live on location.
I know I would not appreciate someone coming to my workplace, uninvited, and trying to make me look like a fool.
Man, Dave had balls in those days didn't he? He can still be funny but only when he's pissed off. e.g. When McCain blew him off to do another interview his ranting and sarcasm was reminiscent of the old Dave.
I watch clips of Late Night when David Letterman hosted in the 80's. Very funny shows. I think he inspired Conan O'Brien in a way. And in turn they both inspired the new host Jimmy Fallon.
With the move to the Ed Sullivan Theater the ability to spontaneously interrupt other TV shows live during taping was lost. No more Live at Five across the hall. Now there's the Hello Deli.
You bone head, my comment was in response to somebody who asked why Dave doesn't do this kind of thing anymore. My comment suggests that Dave is a more classier guy now because he's much older. I didn't suggest that this was funny at all. As an aside, I bet your the same type of person who "beat women", where at the end of the day you wind up in a patty wagon down the station.
@mikokat - I've wondered that, too. I don't even watch him anymore. He seems old and tired. When he sits at his desk and talks, he looks down. I think it's kinda sad.

@mikokat He did for a while at CBS and his ratings basically tanked and Leno's skyrocketed. He does do things like this to some degree though.
