I teach a bit of setar on youtube. I have two videos that show my theory about how most persian modes are really derived from each other and their connection with the Greek ancient modes. I believe the origin of the quarter-tone is in wind instruments, a by-product of making reeds with a major scale. I think it is the tuning that makes the cura sound so different not so much the age. The age effect can probably felt a lot better when listening to the instrument close-up.
@rossmdaly Hi Ross, a question, if I may. Is the connection between Ancient Greek modes and Persian Mayeh (modes) known and published? e.g. Aolian-> Nava, phrygian -> Shoor etc. Also is there any theory on the origin of the 3/4 tone interval? Any clues are appreciated.
Lol, i was there back then.... i think it was in the Kirche (Marheineke Platz, Kreuzberg 69)... also despite it is great music after some 1,5 - 2 hours of hearing it i fell asleep :-)
OMG you guys have to be kidding me...The Aryan people are in India,Pakistan,Kashmir,Iran,Iraq,Afghanistan,Also Turkey,And the Arabian Peninnsula.Hate to break your heart but...Aryans are just not European decent.Arya=Noble The word Arya is found in the Sanskrit language.Which was only found in India and Iran at times loooong ago.And Arya is still a hindu word used today.Guys just do the research.
we call cura as the smallest instruments of saz. you have baglama 2 typs with large and little stick. you have tanburi 2nd smallest, cura smallest of them.
search for tanburi cemil bey VERY GOOD player but he lived in the 1900.:( when u hear his creation of music. it's MAGIC
so he is irish and plays mix of turks and greeks and maybe persian(iran) cultures. very interesting, isn't it?:D even we can play each others music coz of politics:(.
99% says turks and greeks are different people only 1% says they are brother:D. why not? we live on the same planet on the same. we share olive, flowers, sun, oxygen. why should we not brother?
I am greek and i totally agree with you. I think that the fact that we share common music and culture is something very interesting that we should be celebrating and evolving and not arguing about! Ross Daly mixes cultures so beautifuly and yet he is Irish!!!
The pontians are actually and Iranian (Aryan) tribe not Turkish or Greek orignally. However, the people living there today probably have all kinds of blood in them (Greek, Turkish, Roman, etc.)
it's allmost difficult to say it's turkish or greek. it's not both but it's music. very good. he mastered allmost every single instruments. cura, saz, lavta, armudi kemence, ud and more. u can't see those artist everywhere. you can count maybe 100 artist like him. excellent.
I play the persian setar and some Turkish instruments (yayli tanbur and the baglama cura). That's why I commented on the sound quality. You have very unique instruments. Hope to see more videos.
Sorry, I have to ask another question. I am curious to know how you strung the cura up for this song. It looks like you have 7 or 8 strings but obviously you're not strumming all. Any information would be appreciated. Tnx.

This is a very elegantly crafted cura. Can you tell me if it's an antique? Thanks for sharing the videos. They are inspiring.
peybak 4 years ago
Yes this cura is indeed an antique. I don't know exactly how old or where it's from but it appears to be very old

please can someone tell me more about these instruments, they are both so impressive!
uuav 4 years ago
The string instrument is the 'cura' (pronounced joo-rah) and
it belongs to the saz family of Turkish folk instruments.
The other one is the Persian 'tombak' or 'zarb', both names are used alternately
alexlais 4 years ago
thanks !
awesome players & music
the zarb seems to have so low bass for his size!
