@spacitydrummer4JC that's if you wanna be just fast, but the idea is to be fast and have control. if you do it as fast as you can you might get injured if you don't do it with smooth technique in a relax manner, and the notes must be in time and even. maybe you don't have any problems with that, but it's not a great advice for those who don't know. but you are right play as fast as you can but you must play with good technique, that also means with no tension, in a very relaxed manner.
I really like this video, but I can't do the exercise at 3:50! I've been playing for about 4 years now, but I never learned to play with my fingers. Moreover, my former grip was way too tight so I have to relearn how to hold the sticks. But I just can't reproduce the exercise at 3:50!! Does anyone know what I could do?
@onnovz02 I had a similar problem but just with my left hand. I found the exercise he discusses at around 4:18 where you turn the stick around and play using your fingers against your forearm really helpful. It will probably feel alien at first but take things really slow and soon you'll be more comfortable using finger strokes.
I want to become a drummer, but all I have is a small RealFeel snare pad that my dad bought me for Christmas. XD I'm a left-hander, so my right hand has no coordination at all. This video, though created and demonstrated by someone who is obviously right handed, is still very helpful to me! The visuals and the techniques for grip and movement are great! Thanks!
i gotta get me some of those 2451's. They are exactly what im looking for. Right in between a 5b and 5a and they are made in hickory as well so they wont break to often with the metal i play.
You explain everything so clearly in a way that makes so much sense. And it is just baffling the sticking patterns you can do (the part two examples make my jaw drop). I'm gonna try some of the finger exercises! Thanks Alan.
you are not using a fulcrum for maximum strength and control, not to mention bounce.
what style are you playing with?

Developing speed isn't difficult. Just play as fast as you can for as long as you can. Take a break. Do it again.

Simply efficient and brilliant.
Best hands technique explanation I found on Youtube so far.

You might want to reconsider the name of the video, since you are not actually playing with your hands but with sticks,,,
It is very informative though.
