  • I have noticed that the captioning for the show is surprisingly accurate compared to many other movies and tv shows that I have seen. The only exception being the censoring of curse words. At first I was pleased that they had accurate captioning but was disappointed when I noticed that these captions are censored. Since hearing people can hear every word, why aren't deaf people given the chance to experience the same dialogue?

  • i didn't see your comment until just now. ok this discussion involves AMC, but actually it ihappens in many channels. few hearing people told me that the voiced words weren't erased, only the captioned. words. that's not equal access. it reeks of paternalism if hearing people think we need to be 'protected from these dirty words'. if they cannot caption certain words due to personal or religious beliefs, then they have no business working in that field.

  • @mishkazena Agree. Personal/religious beliefs should NOT have any part of what goes into captioning!

  • these youtube (google) features are not perfect nor perfectly smooth at times - smile - like most of us too; we all try though - !

    cheers,

    lauren/ccac

  • That CCAC video has been captioned from when it was uploaded - it works for me and others; so...if you cannot open it - perhaps others fail to see them to, so we'll sure investigate asap....as you know, you may need to click on the small red cc box on the lower right....

  • we do not have time to add it today - and don't follow what you say re CCAC's own request, it sure IS captioned there...

  • @siglmgga I tried clicking on the CC button, and nothing happened.

  • @siglmgga My apologies. Tried again. Yes, it IS captioned.

  • Hello DrDon...youtube comments do not allow us to include any web addresses or email addresses, sigh...yet try this to see the ccac channel, go to youtube, then com slash user slash ccacaptioning...and if that does not work, try an email to us, ccacaptioning has a gmail addresss :-)

  • @siglmgga The link you gave (in the roundabout way) worked. I don't see my video there, but I did find it ironic that the CCAC's own "request for submission of videos" was NOT captioned.....

  • Thanks for the clear Captioning on your video about this. With your permission, we'd like to put it on our own youtube channel, okay with you?

Cheers from the CCAC whose mission is simply inclusion of quality captioning universally. (Collaborative for Communication Access via Captioning). We cannot put an address here, yet we are easy to google.

  • @siglmgga Yes, this is OK with me, but please provide me a link to it.

  • 100% agreed! Little you know that I often e-mail to AMC about scrolling cc on t.v many times? I asked them to change it back to the original CC style like before on DVD. I prefer to read basic pop-up block style closed caption. Not scrolling style. :) All DVD do have pop-up block CC are 100% perfect until the people usually transferred/converted/cut down while edited or/and changed CC style into scrolling CC style for TV. Why? Every time I see a scrolling CC, I changed the channel!

  • FYI I decided to post this via my FB.

  • i came across an article written by a transcriber. apparently the transcribers got together to discuss the 'thorny' issues of captioning the 'unacceptable' words. the general consensual is that it's up to each transcriber to decide whether to caption the offending words or not. they are entitled to refuse if these words offend their religious belief. I was astounded that they were allowed to retain personal beliefs on their jobs and that they have this much power over deaf community.

  • @mishkazena I was wondering about that, but according to someone at another person's blog, it is apparently part of AMC's policy. But I agree that individual captionists should NOT have that kind of power to make their own judgements on what to include. If they have a personal issue with the language, then they should NOT take that particular job. And if they find out during the job they can't do it right, then they should ask someone else to take over and finish it.

  • Ah, I am big fan of this show since season 1. About offensive languages, it doesn't bother me at all. Now about 'b_____', etc. I think they do make the sound 'bleep' when they cuss.

  • @rachadw Nope. Hearing hear EVERY word.

  • @DrDonGCSUS I am not here to doubt your words but I am just curious, how did you know? If that's true, then yes we SHOULD write the letter of complaint to AMC and FCC.

  • @rachadw How do I know? Others have said so. And for final proof, my wife is hearing and she was sitting right next to me in the same room and she says she hears every cuss, NO bleeps.

  • @DrDonGCSUS Oh! I didn't realized you're married to hearing wife.
