hi ray just bought my irst ever project from you the WSG, i cant wait and im so excited I might pee my pants lmao, cheers for your awesome designs, if i get on well with this then you will defo have more of my money and admiration cheesr ross
When trying to design a nice feature set with a reasonable level of complexity you often have to defer the addition of elements to a satellite product. The ULTIMATE Expander is the satellite unit that includes several more functional units. It has a state variable filter (LP, BP, and HP) that doubles as a sine oscillator as well as an ADSR EG. The MFOS 10 step or 16 step seq.s can provides arpeggiation. The ULTIMATE's white noise can be given a pink characteristic using it's low pass filter.
It does not have a sine wave generator??? What about pink noise??? Does it have an appeggerator???A "killer" synthe HAS to have sine, pink and appeggeration! :-)
@cheddybumpkins While I don't have a polyphonic synth on the drawing board you can buy a MIDI to CV convertor with multiple outputs that would permit you to play several "voices" made up of VCOs, VCF, and VCA from your modular. I made a cool polyphonic synth in the dim past... about 25 years ago and somehow I lost the documentation. I have a few projects on the bench right now but in the future I may revisit and share that old design if I can remember what I did .
I am building the ULTIMATE now, just finished matching x-sistors and hope to use 3.5mm jacks instead of bananas. Would the ULTIMATE be modifiable to use all 3.5mm jacks with possible use of "multiple" modules that provide parallel connection (i.e. since bananas are stackable, why not, right?). Hope to work it with paia/doepfer equipment.
@kitdemos It should work fine with the 3.5mm jacks (if they fit why not) as long as you connect the panel to the signal ground (power supply ground). I can see taking an output to multiple inputs but I would avoid shorting multiple outputs to one input completely since that would be connecting many low impedance circuit points to one another and would probably not have the effect you intended. As far as working with other modules I would make the assumption that things will work fine.
@XysteRST205 You can always learn. Check out the "How Can I Start Learning About Electronics?" page at Music From Outer Space. It's under Synth-DIY 101 in the Synth DIY tree.
What is the MFOS email address, I have soooooooooooooooo many questions. For instance, can the soundlab ultimate be controlled with the MFOS mini controller, if it can't, are there other keyboards from MFOS that it can be controlled from, what is it being controller from in the samples here?
Yes it can be controlled by the Mini-Controller as well as the Single Bus Keyboard Controller. Or a sequencer or a MIDI to CV convertor. In the samples we are using the MFOS Single Bus Keyboard Controller.
I would give it a try. 2N3904s or 2N2222s are really cheap and matching is not that hard as long as you have a GOOD DVM. If matching falls short get the SSM2210s. I went straight for the SSM2210s in mine.
I would have to say that the Sound Lab ULTIMATE is semi-modular. However the upcoming expander will do much to bring it into the full-modular world. Cheers
Hello Ray , this is an amazing project :) , one question that I can't answer myself on your page. Is it full modular or semimodular ( like ARP 2600 )??. I've posted this video on switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com
How do you play it if it's just a box?

Is it possible to get complete built synths from you to?
I want to play the ready product, the building is none of my interest, but i maybe still would love to have one of your synths ;)

@hypervisionaryrealm It does too have a sine wave generator(the filter can be one).

How feasable would it be to replace all the patch points and leads on this design with one centralised patch programmer using digital switching?

is it possible to have a midi in?

Ray, are you possibly thinking of designing a polysynth?

Awesome! I got all excited then but then realised i have pretty much zero knowledge of electronics

The sounds are really impressive! Analogue at its best. 3 VCOs! Awesome!

does any one know if this can act as an amplifier? No effects when amplifying though??
ProcrastinatorsUnify 1 year ago
No the ULTIMATE does not have an amplifier nor can it be used for one. The ULTIMATE EXPANDER has a low power stereo headphone amp.

Awesome! I love my WSG and basically wanted exactly what you've come up with here. I can't believe I didn't see this until now!

Hey Ray, stop making new cool projects!
My wife will smash my face if i continue to build MFOS stuff! ...LOL
I WANT THE ULTIMATE.

Great synth Ray!!,
second AR or ADSR would have been really cool. Could one of your other PCB be extra added?
alain112007 2 years ago
That is definitely one of the modules that will be included in the expander.

WOW! You have done it again. I already have a case picked out for one. this would be sound lab # 3

Thanks for posting this demo! Can't wait to start building this project. Will you include front panels for the expander project as well ?
Dovinia 2 years ago
Yes I will and since I can't decide what NOT to put in the expander it may be as large as the ULTIMATE.
