Losing someone you love suddenly, esp. as a youth, as I was, was an amplified shock, and yet children lose parents every day. When it is you, though, that is cold comfort. I think of that each time there is a tragedy, whatever the scale or territory.

Studies with an agenda generally focus on gun deaths and only show 1 side of a pattern It is very easy to mislead people into believing they effect rates. The bulk of the literature on the subject shows little to no effect on index crime rates. The big change is in patterns shifting methods and victimized populations. You have to look at the body of literature, not just 1 study

The murder rate has also not gone down as much as some like to say(sorry gun lovers) Law abiding people don't kill and they seldom get killed. The majority of people that get murdered are felons themselves that know the perp. What has changed is a drastic drop in assaults on inocent strangers with a small reduction in murder. The criminals are now scared to go after people they dont know.
