The majority of attacks are 70+ miles across the gulf, like all the shipping traffic that used to go up the middle is favoring the Yemen side vs. Somalia. This negates any claims about "volunteer coast guard", dumping waste, stealing fish etc as pure rubbish. They're preying on civilian traffic, pure and simple. They need to be stopped.

if we are operating under the assumption that somalia has no government control and therefore is technically not a "state" at this point then how can they have a sovereign 12 mile coastal region?
the people who attack Mr. Molyneux are not that familiar with what he stands for. he's trying to educate people to look at all angles of a situation. how many people were even aware of foreign countries dumping waste off the Somalian coast? or harvesting all of the fish in their waters, for that matter? haven't we allowed the Somalians to be trapped in a hopeless situation? we need to start thinking of ways to prevent this instead of just reacting to it.
1. They are an organized state militia of the willing, so it is not vigilante activity.
2. In my opinion, so no offence, 12 miles isn't enough, if it was 12 miles off the US coast most people would be shitting themselves and demanding action (based on general observation).
I was in the US Navy for 10 years. Based on my experience interdicting smugglers (piracy was not heard of much before I ended my last deployment in 2002) The only places where Somali pirates could get at ships with territorial waters is the strait, and possibly near the islands east of Somalia if they also own those. To think otherwise would be to assume that merchant mariners are too stupid to avoid pirates. Interdicting navies could have concentration near the strait to prevent piracy.
i have this teacher who is aggresive to students, and one can clearly see that he cuts him self when hes negative and treats people bad. unfortunately i have a history that obsorbes it
I think you've made another mistake Stef. I think a lot of people do want an angry, vitriolic, unhealthy life because that feels like it's significant, important. It's like a mini-war, it feels like something where the victory is really important and thus one's actions are important. It's a way to create an impression of power for the powerless.
I see this quite a bit as well. People love to be offended so they can raise their flag of self importance. In reality the only thing "offensive" is a direct physical attack but clinging to an illusion of identity and then defending it in anger seems to be a common reaction.
That said I used to do it myself and still haven't quite kicked the habit. For anyone who as a result has suffered at my hands, and to those that I intended to suffer and who quite rightly laughed it off, I appologise.
Hey Stef...I'm not sure the people you are directing this to have the capacity to understand what you are saying...Their response will be 'Yeah whatever Smartass!' - you cannot argue with an ignorant man...but hey, full marks for trying!
I was right with you until you took a posturing tone like "Oh yeah I dont think you have the balls".As someone I think of as smart that seemed really childish and counterproductive to youre point.Otherwise good work I liked the libertarian piece.
What do you think about pirates attacking pleasure craft? They aren't dumping toxic waste or stealing fish, they just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Why should they be kidnapped? The "Le Ponant" and the "Carre D'as" are 2 examples of successful Somali raids against pleasure vessels.
It's obvious from the text from the other video you are referring to Phishinguy. It's too bad you made this about him and some moral high ground and not his arguments, in logic we call this a straw man. He was obviously upset about your assessment of what, in reality, is a highly complex situation that can't easily be reduced to either side, that being robin hood or terrorists. It may be both in fact and of course there many other aspects to consider.
I don't know how you put up with the endless stream of attacks. I don't think I could, even understanding the psychology behind it. Wonderful response Stef, and I for one still trust you infinitely more than just about any other source of information I've found. At least everything you say has been subjected to tests of logical consistency. TV news, talk radio, newspapers, magazines, no one else can claim that.
I would love to live in a world that is less emotional "violent". Although I do my very best not inflict the chaos I live with on other people, it doesn't always work.
I work very hard to keep in a world of rational discourse, emotion is not necessarily the enemy of reason, but it does need to be subserviant.
I find it funny that you explain away your error with "we can't know it, anyway." Because isn't a major point of your philosophy that one shouldn't just assert stuff about stuff one can't know stuff about? And if your defence now is that we can't know what the "pirates" are actually up to, doesn't that render the whole of your previous video one gigantic error?
It seems the CAPS anger is a defense reaction to a sensitive nerve. If you pointed out that I was a cyborg my whole life I might hide behind the CAPS until I was ready to deal with the issue.
10 minutes is 10 times more than 60 seconds. That really is too much to be focusing on all cap youtube comments that don't matter to you much. Really, really is too much. Not only that, but actually making a video about it, that takes extra effort...
But don't take what I said too seriously, lol, just messin/trollin around.
Well, time is relative, and I do suppose that value is relative, too. Those whom feel that ten minutes is not a waste to talk and think about things that we otherwise do not care about will talk and think about such things. Those whom do not will not.
Personally, I believe that the comments do, in fact, matter to Stef, to the point that they offended him, causing him to create this video.
Perhaps it doesn't matter to him whether he is attacked but it matters if he can offer some insight into the motive for attacking. That would be worth at least 10 minutes.
Once a person has become this paranoid mistake attacking individual. What is a proper or most beneficial way to improve upon the behaviour? Is it to become self observant and correct the problem through reason during times of digression? Or is it to simply let it go as it arises? I personally prefer the latter but Im interested to hear anybody elses opinion. Including you stef, if you find the time to respond.
Well, neither are an easy path to follow. Many would choose the former, if only because it allows laziness and procrastination. I find that the former is more effective, though it requires a lot of self discipline (significantly less online, though).
Just joking, those people are funny. I showed my grandmother your "True News 32: Somali Pirates?". She thought it was very one sided. Today she saw the captain and her daughter reuniting and she was crying. It has some people who will always think might = right. (Might = larger numbers and power)
Heinz Kohut was the first to coin the idea of narcissistic rage. His explanation of narcissistic rage and depression stated, depressions are interrupted by rages because things are not going their way, because responses are not forthcoming in the way they expected and needed. He went further to say that narcissists may even search for conflict to find a way to alleviate pain or suffering."
Very interesting video. I would actually go further than that; if someone is using personal attacks or becomes filled with impotent rage instead of trying to put forward rational arguments, they are really insulting their own intelligence and ability.
Great video Stefan - rational, humane and compassionate.
Chameleon41 - Anger can indeed be validated, and not always negative - this is true - but Stef is not saying this. He is merely pointing out the irrational actions these people have to videos on YT.
Yep, if you look at the full 'view comments' section, you'll see that that was a response to a specific post which I disagreed with, and not to stefbot.
We all know people make mistakes. But when you have a show called "True News" and speak about subjects with such certainty and passion, you'd think you'd be a little more thorough. It's not like this is the first time something like this has happened.
That's the entire point, you can't possibly be absolutely thorough, unless you experience it first hand. And the 12-mile limit is irrelevant. The supposed "pirates" are not the ones who began the violence. Exceeding a certain limit doesn't change that.
I'm not asking for absolute certainty, but with a subject like this, I wouldn't call searching the internet for an hour good journalism (or "True News").
"I'm not asking for absolute certainty, but with a subject like this, I wouldn't call searching the internet for an hour good journalism (or "True News")."
Any certainty, whatever. Stefan isn't a journalist, he's a philosopher. He calls it true news to make a kind of "reply" to the bullshit mainstream media feeds you and the bullshit they spray on every fact.
It seems when you make a mistake you try to make out that everyone is all angry and a bit crazy. You come across like a cult leader who us using psychological tactics on his followers.
No, he's giving people an advice. I experienced it firsthand: anger, especially irrational anger he is talking about, is absolutely counter-productive, and will not get you happy in life, on the contrary. And besides, it's not his "followers", as you call them, that he uses these supposed "psychological tactics" on, it are the people that irrationally get mad at him for every irrelevant mistake he makes.
It's not people that point out his mistakes that he adresses in this videos, it's people who react angrily and in CAPS on his errors. Reacting so angrily on a simple mistake is what he advises people not to do. He doesn't say anything about poiting out mistakes in general. He has said often in previous videos that he welcomes the pointing out of mistakes, and thanks the people that do.
You must be so proud of yourself. How can you know that you're right? You're foolish to say that he's lying, and then don't give any arguments, it gets no-one any further.
I think everyone ( including me of course:) ) who responds to anything should sit back and ask: What am I feeling right now as I post? What are my motivations? What am I trying to achieve? Is this a reasonable way to do this? Will it accomplish anything that I feel is worth acheiving? etc. etc. I'm not perfect, but I try to do that as much as I can. Hopefully, by doing so my posts would tend to be more positive and expressive in a beneficial way. Often, I simply refrain from posting.
I admire the fact you admit it is possible to for you to make mistakes, and that you are not intimidated by those who believe CAPSLOCK makes an argument stronger.
Travel to Somalia, look into the brains of an alledged "pirate", search for their motivations and memories, then come back, and tell me what you find.
The Somali's didn't start. They reacted. Now they've become agressive.
you have got to be a super, ultra liberal "space cadet"!
easy to tell, you blame the victims of crime and not the criminal! our N. American society is full of guys who think like you, which accounts for our high crime rates.
go ahead and tell me that those controlling the piracy are using their ransom monies to clean up the beaches of toxic waste and not building fancy big homes and buying expensive cars!
BTW, I would never want to travel to Somalia,..under any conditions
Nah, I'm not Liberal. Besides, my title is irrelevant.
I don't blame the victims of the crime, that's the point. The "pirates" were the victims in the first place. The so called heroes/the navy's of different countries come there and threaten the "pirates", and when the pirates agress themselves, they are suddenly the bad guys.
Why am I accountable in any way for high crime rates? That absolute fucking bullshit! I'm against violence, but the "pirates" aren't the ones who started the violence.
sorry, but you ARE a liberal, with an added problem of not being able to distinguish between good and bad. One is as one says and does!
according to your twisted logic, the N. American natives should be able to embark on murder, rape and pillage because of their long standing history of evils done to them?
I am not a liberal. Why are you so obsessed with titles? Because I see the other side of the story doesn't mean I can distinguish between good and bad.
And no, that happened a long time ago. I would blame the European immigrants, if they caused it, and not the Indians if it happened in that time.
please define for me YOUR definition of the term "liberal". and in the second part of your argument you make a fallacy, the Native americans would not have this right based on the aggression done against their ancestors ... though some may argue for restitution for damages, though that is a separate issue. Where the Somali "pirates" are acting against an on going threat to their existence/livelihood, thus the situations are not similar.
"go ahead and tell me that those controlling the piracy are using their ransom monies to clean up the beaches of toxic waste and not building fancy big homes and buying expensive cars!"
It doesn't matter where they spend it on. Because of toxic waste dumping and fish-stealing by other coutries made them lose a lot of money.
"BTW, I would never want to travel to Somalia,..under any conditions"
Perhaps you are aware of the fact that a number of years back, the Canadian cod fishing industry on the eastern coast was totally wiped out by over fishing by foreign fleets. How would you feel about coping with Canadian pirates going after European shipping?
Do you mean like the American "research vessels" that went up to look into sealing practices in Canada and were supported by the US Navy? again you equate unlike things, the situations of the status quo in Canada are vastly different then Somalia, Canada has other means by which to get restitution that i do not believe are viable for Somalia.
So, by firing RPGs and AK 47 assault rifles at unarmed merchant ships and their crews, the pirates don't intend killing anyone? What would they do if their demands were ignored?
Despite what their intentions might be, they didn't kill anyone.
The west on the other hand killed an entire generation. Then come the "heroes" on "navy" ships and threaten them, and merchant ships don't give a fuck and come near them anyway. There is a very good remedy against the hostage-taking, and that is to just GTFO.
I was just thinking, some of the Somalis may be just some criminals, yes, but what caused them to be criminals? The death of an entire generation by what they experience "outsiders".
unarmed ? why is that? why do they not hire proper protection services to defend their interests? i do disagree with violence, i would love to see a peaceful solution found. I believe this impossible without all the facts, so in a few decades maybe a peaceful solution would become apparent that is not now. What i do know is a healthy dose of skepticism is good in all cases and no decisions good or bad is able to be made in this area at this time, as all information will posses to much bias.
keep up the good work Stef, too many people are brainwashed to react a certain way... keep pumping out the videos and teaching what you know, the truth will appear through the fog of everone's minds eventually we will put the whole puzzle together and stand back and look at it, wondering why it took so long to see what the picture was
the governments go in and kill them because they dont want to bow down. instead they want to get their own food and feed their own familys and that is piracy.
couldnt u say that the west is controlling somalia. Think about it Somalia has lots of war lords and war groups BUT also they have a famine. So the west gives food to the people starving. Now we dump the waste into the ocean ruining the fish so the "pirates" cant eat and they r starving now. So u have the civilians starving u have ur "pirates" starving what now we have control of all the food. SO now its like this the civilians bow down cuz they get food and the pirates dont want to sooo
Anger has a lot of different sources. It's not irrational and unreasonable by necessity.
I agree that 'e-shouting' (all caps) at somebody on a YouTube video is a slightly odd concept, but that doesn't make anger a negative thing by default.
I hope you don't think I was "raging" against you, Stefan..Rage Against The Molyneux?
I wasn't. I wasn't using any expletives or anything like that. Just trying to correct some major misconceptions that you used to fuel your video. I disagree with you on a lot, but you're intelligent and I'm just trying to keep your ideas straight.
A person can first recognise their inappropriate behaviour after the event. People tend to zone out, become less conscious, at exactly the time when the inappropriate behaviour occurs, that's why it continues, is a problem, and is not recognised by the person. It is hard to train oneself out of this behaviour, but it requires one to remain present and not go off on a mental holiday when things get tricky.
@EndDepravity: Stef and some others are grandfathered in from the days, 06-07-ish, when you could request a longer time limit under "Premium Content" provider conditions after Youtube introduced the 10 minute limit. I believe they stopped that program in late 07.
The only way to get longer limits now is to become a Youtube "Partner" that of course also gets you some money from advertisement too. Though, your channel has to met some requirements first.
And yes, I realize this video is more about the dangers of inaccuracy rage, just trying to point out that the problem was not with your facts but with your arguments and understanding of the situation.
I'd say it's more analogous to saying that in a war, you can only shoot enemy combatants. International shipping is the civilian in this, just an unrelated party who intends no harm.
I've actually been following the pirate news closely for over a year now and I've never seen news about small boats carrying waste being captured, just tankers and cargo ships.
In fact, I think I may stop in to the chat room this Sunday, if I can squeeze it into a study break.
but you don't know who the people dumping toxic waste or spying or whatever are doing. Its not as if polluters go up to you and start broadcasting on megaphones thats what they're there for unless theres green peace dogging them.
And even if they did any coastgaurd would pull over any ship they thought looked suspicous.
Obama is allowed to ban any 18 wheeler coming from mexico due to immigration fears cause but somalia isn't allowed a volunteer coast gaurd.
I like your reaction to these people, it's clear-headed and contains practical advice. The only thing that could be better is if you were extending love to the abusers with it. I would say, within 12 miles of Somalia it is vigilante rule, outside of the 12 miles is piracy
PikeBeth 2 years ago

I think you've made another mistake Stef. I think a lot of people do want an angry, vitriolic, unhealthy life because that feels like it's significant, important. It's like a mini-war, it feels like something where the victory is really important and thus one's actions are important. It's a way to create an impression of power for the powerless.
newperve 2 years ago
I see this quite a bit as well. People love to be offended so they can raise their flag of self importance. In reality the only thing "offensive" is a direct physical attack but clinging to an illusion of identity and then defending it in anger seems to be a common reaction.

I find it funny that you explain away your error with "we can't know it, anyway." 10 minutes is 10 times more than 60 seconds. That really is too much to be focusing on all cap youtube comments that don't matter to you much. Really, really is too much. Not only that, but actually making a video about it, that takes extra effort...
But don't take what I said too seriously, lol, just messin/trollin around.
UnhealthySalad 2 years ago
Well, time is relative, and I do suppose that value is relative, too. Those whom feel that ten minutes is not a waste to talk and think about things that we otherwise do not care about will talk and think about such things. Those whom do not will not.
Personally, I believe that the comments do, in fact, matter to Stef, to the point that they offended him, causing him to create this video.
korimito 2 years ago
Perhaps it doesn't matter to him whether he is attacked but it matters if he can offer some insight into the motive for attacking. That would be worth at least 10 minutes.
DCLugi 2 years ago 2
Once a person has become this paranoid mistake attacking individual. What is a proper or most beneficial way to improve upon the behaviour? Is it to become self observant and correct the problem through reason during times of digression? Or is it to simply let it go as it arises? I personally prefer the latter but Im interested to hear anybody elses opinion. Including you stef, if you find the time to respond.
Cougar604 2 years ago
Well, neither are an easy path to follow. Many would choose the former, if only because it allows laziness and procrastination. I find that the former is more effective, though it requires a lot of self discipline (significantly less online, though).

We all know people make mistakes. But when you have a show called "True News" and speak about subjects with such certainty and passion, you'd think you'd be a little more thorough. It's not like this is the first time something like this has happened.
5y89sdfih 2 years ago
That's the entire point, you can't possibly be absolutely thorough, unless you experience it first hand. And the 12-mile limit is irrelevant. The supposed "pirates" are not the ones who began the violence. Exceeding a certain limit doesn't change that.

Dangerman5 2 years ago
No, he's giving people an advice. I experienced it firsthand: anger, especially irrational anger he is talking about, is absolutely counter-productive, and will not get you happy in life, on the contrary. And besides, it's not his "followers", as you call them, that he uses these supposed "psychological tactics" on, it are the people that irrationally get mad at him for every irrelevant mistake he makes.
myusernameisluc 2 years ago 2
It's his assertion that people have gotten very angry. It's just a control technique to make his mistakes seem like other people's problems.
Next time he makes a mistake you won't want to point it out for fear of being branded a nutter.
Dangerman5 2 years ago
It's not people that point out his mistakes that he adresses in this videos, it's people who react angrily and in CAPS on his errors. Reacting so angrily on a simple mistake is what he advises people not to do. He doesn't say anything about poiting out mistakes in general. He has said often in previous videos that he welcomes the pointing out of mistakes, and thanks the people that do.

you have got to be a super, ultra liberal "space cadet"!
easy to tell, you blame the victims of crime and not the criminal! our N. American society is full of guys who think like you, which accounts for our high crime rates.
go ahead and tell me that those controlling the piracy are using their ransom monies to clean up the beaches of toxic waste and not building fancy big homes and buying expensive cars!
BTW, I would never want to travel to Somalia,..under any conditions
genie0390 2 years ago
Nah, I'm not Liberal. Besides, my title is irrelevant.
I don't blame the victims of the crime, that's the point. The "pirates" were the victims in the first place. The so called heroes/the navy's of different countries come there and threaten the "pirates", and when the pirates agress themselves, they are suddenly the bad guys.
Why am I accountable in any way for high crime rates? That absolute fucking bullshit! I'm against violence, but the "pirates" aren't the ones who started the violence.
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
sorry, but you ARE a liberal, with an added problem of not being able to distinguish between good and bad. One is as one says and does!
according to your twisted logic, the N. American natives should be able to embark on murder, rape and pillage because of their long standing history of evils done to them?
genie0390 2 years ago
I am not a liberal. Why are you so obsessed with titles? Because I see the other side of the story doesn't mean I can distinguish between good and bad.
And no, that happened a long time ago. I would blame the European immigrants, if they caused it, and not the Indians if it happened in that time.
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
please define for me YOUR definition of the term "liberal". and in the second part of your argument you make a fallacy, the Native americans would not have this right based on the aggression done against their ancestors ... though some may argue for restitution for damages, though that is a separate issue. Where the Somali "pirates" are acting against an on going threat to their existence/livelihood, thus the situations are not similar.
holoimajica 2 years ago
"go ahead and tell me that those controlling the piracy are using their ransom monies to clean up the beaches of toxic waste and not building fancy big homes and buying expensive cars!"
It doesn't matter where they spend it on. Because of toxic waste dumping and fish-stealing by other coutries made them lose a lot of money.
"BTW, I would never want to travel to Somalia,..under any conditions"
And?
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
Perhaps you are aware of the fact that a number of years back, the Canadian cod fishing industry on the eastern coast was totally wiped out by over fishing by foreign fleets. How would you feel about coping with Canadian pirates going after European shipping?
genie0390 2 years ago
Not different. In my eyes we're all citizens of the world. Imaginary lines don't change anything.
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
Do you mean like the American "research vessels" that went up to look into sealing practices in Canada and were supported by the US Navy? again you equate unlike things, the situations of the status quo in Canada are vastly different then Somalia, Canada has other means by which to get restitution that i do not believe are viable for Somalia.
holoimajica 2 years ago
And remember, the pirates kill no-one. The toxic and nuclear waste killed an entire generation of Somali's. Who is the victim? You tell me.
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
So, by firing RPGs and AK 47 assault rifles at unarmed merchant ships and their crews, the pirates don't intend killing anyone? What would they do if their demands were ignored?
Get a brain!!
genie0390 2 years ago
First of all, thanks for insulting me.
Despite what their intentions might be, they didn't kill anyone.
The west on the other hand killed an entire generation. Then come the "heroes" on "navy" ships and threaten them, and merchant ships don't give a fuck and come near them anyway. There is a very good remedy against the hostage-taking, and that is to just GTFO.
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
I was just thinking, some of the Somalis may be just some criminals, yes, but what caused them to be criminals? The death of an entire generation by what they experience "outsiders".
myusernameisluc 2 years ago
unarmed ? why is that? why do they not hire proper protection services to defend their interests? i do disagree with violence, i would love to see a peaceful solution found. I believe this impossible without all the facts, so in a few decades maybe a peaceful solution would become apparent that is not now. What i do know is a healthy dose of skepticism is good in all cases and no decisions good or bad is able to be made in this area at this time, as all information will posses to much bias.

couldnt u say that the west is controlling somalia. SO now its like this the civilians bow down cuz they get food and the pirates dont want to sooo
robertdog0 2 years ago
to simplify: anger is about the individual victimizing himself by thinking that he has no choice
don't confuse a difficult choice with no choice at all
don't confuse an unwanted choice with no choice at all
if you perceive no choice you get angry
if you live in freedom - what's to be angry about?
something to consider
nyclights526 2 years ago
Anger has a lot of different sources. It's not irrational and unreasonable by necessity.
I agree that 'e-shouting' (all caps) at somebody on a YouTube video is a slightly odd concept, but that doesn't make anger a negative thing by default.

The "pirates" initiated violence against people who are entirely unrelated, even if they were within 12 miles.
Even assuming that Party A has dumped waste in Somali waters
The "pirates" are attacking unrelated Party B's ships and holding their crews and cargo for ransom.
Eg. I am mugged by a black person. I go buy a gun and shoot the next black person I see, claiming that I am enacting justice.
It's just a ridiculous argument.
Not ALL CAPS RAGEing, just promoting truth

By that logic, in a war, you can only shoot at the guy who has actually shot at you...
stefbot 2 years ago
