@InecomCompany Sorry to again slam in here... but I tought I let you know (if you don't know already) and indeed all HZ fans who don't know, that there is a *spiritual successor* to HZ in the works. Much like what Supreme Commander is to Total Annihilation, it appears Airmech's primary source of inspiration is indeed HZ. I just found out about this. Chk out the YT vids.
@InecomCompany Possible HZ error/bug? According to the then Sega Visions mag, if you managed to get at least 1 infantry unit inside an already enemy captured sub-base, that base was supposed to switch back to neutral: neither player now has the full 4 infantry units controlling the sub-base. But that is not what happens. It remains in enemy control until, of course, you come in & put all 4 infantry inside his base. So, who's right: HZ or the mag?
Its surprizing that you have to take care of each individual unit's ammo *and* fuel. TA, SComm, StarC & even M.A.X. don't have both those logistics. Also, how the terrain affects movement (units sliding on snow!) was also ahead of time. Once we discovered 1 can change orders of already made units, the multi-player experience intensified. Heh, I wanted to put a cardboard to hide each section of the screen (fog of war) but TV wasen't big enough.
HZ, best game on Genesis. After beating TFII, I was ready for more shooter action. Saw HZ also by Techno, took it home, tossed away the manual & wtf? No power-ups, bosses, ship? Could not understand what I was seeing. I gave up, but when my father arrived, he knew. Its was the game he was waiting for. As soon as I got the hang of it, the other games started to gather dust. Ingenious I tought...
Omg I remember this game from bac In The day i put in soo many hrs. This game got me into RTS war craft and c&c. Thanks fir the video. This game was before it's time I don't think Warcraft and cc was out in 89 or 90. Shyt I was 8 and 9 into rts games lolol horrible
@Zero771 I wish he would go back to that style because his videos sounded more raw and natural than they do now. The 2008 CGRs were awesome. Mark was funny, intellectual and he did a lot of multi part videos. From 2010 to now, I find his commentary to be too flashy, reminds me of all the other game reviewers.
This game is also on my top ten all-time list. I used to spend many hours of my youth playing this game over and over memorizing every level and finding different ways to destroy the enemy base. My best friend in middle school and I could literally spend an entire day locked in an all out battle. Great memories! I wish they would have released this on the Wii's Virtual Console because unlike you, I did sell my original cartridge though I held on to it for over 10 years!
@pumataino It could have been awesome on the DS. Its so frustrating that this amazing game has not had a remake/sequel. With Technosoft gone, and Sega being clusless, its sadly unlikely to get the update it deserves.
There is a strategy on the islands level. You build ambulances around your bases and because they take up so much room your opponent cant drop anything off there. All they can do is send in boats which you protect your island with. Problem is that you reach the 50 unit cap very quickly.
My friend Ben would build turrets around his bases and move them to my main base. Everytime I spawned they would kill be before I could do anything. It's basically a lockdown.
My first job was working at Wendy's. I bought this game with my first paycheck. I think it was $40. I wanted to get Phantasy Star II but it was about $70. I got this cause it looked cool and I didn't have $70.
It doesn't seem like the secondary units do anything, all I saw was Mark flying around, dropping units that did nothing, and getting his main guy killed a bunch of times yet somehow he won.
Wow talk about memories. As a kid I remember wanting to buy this game soo bad but the game store only had 1 copy only for rent. So I rented it as much as I could and played it for hours and hours lol This is by far my most favourite game I played on my sega back in the day lol thx for the post, good memories :)
I remember getting this at a flea market for two bucks. It's a fantastic game and a very historic one in terms of the RTS genre but I absolutely suck at it.
i loved this game so much, you could individually select tracks from the options menu at the start of the game... I put them on a cassette for my walkman when i was 11.
@aquapendulum Wrong! At least because Herzog Zwei is a sequel to Herzog on the MSX. And Stonkers on ZX Spectrum is often considered to be the first because of... well, it's age.
@aquapendulum actually, calling Herzog Zwei the first RTS is a common misconception, before it there was Stonkers on the ZX spectrum and before them there was Utopia on the Intellivision

I concur! This is one of the best, most satisfying games ever made. Not only is the 1P mode utterly addictive, I wasted countless hours playing against friends in the VS. mode. I have no idea why this game hasn't been remade for new systems other than it being a kind of cult classic and no one knowing how to pronounce the title. It also has one of the best musical scores outside of FF and Zelda.
I have my copy with a completely unripped booklet, and I have so many childhood memories linked to this game... first RTS I've ever played, and is my favorite sega game of all time as well!!
agreed - this was the best game sega ever made. i have absolutely no idea how it wasn't more popular. i was the only one of my friends who had it, and we were addicted to to that shit like it was crack. multiplayer was the shit! those battles could take 5 hours.
Used to play my roommate this game into the wee hours of the morning. He would fall asleep and I would take over his bases then surround his main base with units. I'd wake him up after I gave the attack command so he got to see his base be destroyed! muwa HA HA HAAAAA!
this was one of my all time favorite games while i had genesis. I can think of a dozen games on the pc like Command & Conquer that play very close to this strategy but none go back to the jetformer and speed and urgency this game has to complete a mission. Another great thing is Herzog played very well in 2 player vs mode
great console, great game, great review - as always. i love your very personal way in giving people nostalgia, especially cause you kinda can add your nostalgia to my own - at least for me...
to me youre a part of all those retro-games, great job - honestly.

id love to finally see the review about the 32X + games for it - is it that hard to get it over there?
Why is it that so many game titles (ok not SO many after all) have German titles.
I just wonder, because I AM German and in my opinion...well...German is very...kind of specific and not cool at all. At least it is not suitable for game titles at all. Do you think German is sort of cool? Or why is it that some choose to make German game titles?
With that said, I wish you all einen wunderschönen Tag ;)
im german as well, and i dont really get you lol, many german names for games?
there are only two wich appear instantly in my mind: this one and wolfenstein... so.... yea, not many to me. and as far as i know from some american friends: they dont like the language - its too rough... well, thats my statement to that, too bad another german answered ;D
well the thing with japanese anime is a different topic altogether
japanese are in many ways fascinated in germans and this translates to much grman expressions used in anime. also german words are spoken similar to japanese, whereas is english the pronunciation is completely different.
for example in japanese and german, the vowels "a e i o u" sounds exactly the same, in english they sound different
other than that the just like germans for their ingenuity in the past...
Well, it was created by the Japanese so I think Americans might have a problem really getting to the heart of your question. I personally don't mind German names for games, as long as their meaning is not silly.
Lots of people thing English is cool, but i think it's the most boring language there is to be honest! I love all the sounds of German, like the ch sounds like in nacht, I dunno I just find it cool :)
I had this game! I loaned it to a friend.. who loaned to a friend.. that moved roughly 1,500 miles away. Except I never knew it... I just thought i lost it or it was stolen..
Happy ending to that story is that nearly 20 years later he tracked me down on facebook - said "dude I got something of yours I need to mail to you, I've had for far too long." So he mailed me a secret package and when I opened it.. My jaw hit the ground.. OMG OMG OMG I was 12 years old again!! =)
I have unpleasant memories of this game. My friend and I rented it. I just wanted to fly the Veritech around, and was depressed when it was more of a strategy game where you manage resources. Im no good at that.
why diddnt you record it in sterio? i bought the game because of the review... now i'm saving up for a sega gennisis model 1 because of how good it sounds in sterio...
This really is an awesome game. for them to put this complex fun and balanced game together in the late 80's when most games were about as deep as a puddle is amazing. I remember winning some matches agains my 4th grade friends that would last all day. very satisfying
MUSHA is defiately not worth it. I prefer shooters on the Sega Saturn like Radiant Silvegun. I tried MUSHA but I could not get into it. Nor its sequel on sega CD.
I'll never forget when I picked up Herzog Zwei for $9 from a bargain bin at "The Good Guys" the same year it released in the U.S. It was the best money I ever spent. Zwei got me loving strategic war games like Dune: Battle for Arrakis.
I know, but many video game magazines don't seem to share our opinion. For them the RTS genre starts with Dune II, for me it starts with Herzog Zwei. Maybe there was even a niche product I didn't know that had the first RTS elements.
Oh god, my favorite gaming magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly gave Herzog Zwei such low ratings that year in their Review Crew section - I was pissed. Trust me, there were no other RTS games like Zwei at the time. But then the RTS games started springing up on the PC Engine. NEC soon got Nectaris / Military Madness and a few others before Dune II.
this is my fav megadrive (genesis) game, i still play this game up to today with a friend of mine, it seems where not the only 2 nuts who love this game to bits, nice
Look, I'm the baddest Herzog Zwei player that ever lived. If you want to challenge me, I live near Charlotte, NC. Feel free to message me here if you dare to challenge!
Herzog Zwei is, indisputably, a must-play. The kind of thing where you just quit your websurfing and review reading, give the game some time to learn how to play, and probably end up adding it to your list of personal favorites.
The fact that it hasn't appeared on any services like GameTap, XBLA, or the Virtual Console is disappointing.
I wish it could've been in Sega Genesis Collection (though it would've been 3rd-party) along with Toejam & Earl, which was absent for no good reason.
With so many online games and MMORPGs available, its amazing that no one has used the concept of this game to make an online RTs.
Just thinking of what could be done with this game, with the potential for improved A.I. and interface (imagine a DS version; that could totally trump any other RTS by having you controlling the robot/jet AND being able to point and click on the map using the pen).
This game looks amazing. I dont care for the music of it though, but a lot of genesis games didnt have very good music so that's okay (Though the ones that did had AWESOME music)

well true there are not many games with german titles
but i used to see a few during my lifespan xD
But I figuered out that Japanese like to use German titles, f.e. for mangas ("Elfenlied") and computer games.
Yeah German sounds pretty strange if it's not ur mother language, that's the reason why I don't see why to use German game titles at all.
Once again: I love your reviews, you are the best game reviewer for me on youtube and you are getting better at it every episode!

German is an awesome language, if I had the time and resources i would learn to speak it fluently.. Just wish I had have taken it up in school!
AdamDallas 2 years ago
You think so? Kewl...
I can't measure the "kewlness" of German as it is my mother language xD
But I think it is really really hard to learn, and might sound strange to others.
godsadog 2 years ago
Lots of people thing English is cool, but i think it's the most boring language there is to be honest! I love all the sounds of German, like the ch sounds like in nacht, I dunno I just find it cool :)
AdamDallas 2 years ago
Can it be that you are a Rammstein fan? : )
Well the only thing I think is cool about my mother language are the special letters we have:
ß ö ä ü
xD
godsadog 2 years ago
that sound when your base is under attack!!!! brings back the memories!!! the best Genesis game ever made, way ahead of its time!

Everyone Google "Rapid Aerial Deployment"
Rapid Aerial Deployment is a
FREEWARE / HOMEBREW RTS game for PC, directly inspired *BY* HERZOG ZWEI.

Best game made for the SEGA
Megadrive|Genesis.
Released in late 1989 in Japan, early 1990 in the United States.
Highly Addictive.
First Real-Time Strategy game released worldwide (Herzog on MSX was JPN only).
FUCKING AWESOME game.
years before Dune II, the first RTS for IBM*PC*

Oh man. I used to play this game a lot.

I REALLY regret not getting this when I had the chance now. I only hope someone else tries to remake it! :)

I have unpleasant memories of this game. My friend and I rented it. I just wanted to fly the Veritech around, and was depressed when it was more of a strategy game where you manage resources. Im no good at that.
felicity4711 2 years ago
why diddnt you record it in sterio? i bought the game because of the review... now i'm saving up for a sega gennisis model 1 because of how good it sounds in sterio...

4 parts? Wow, Mark loves this game.
I feel compelled to give it a go, at the very least.

This looks like a good game. 'Herzog' (One) first appeared on the MSX system in 1988.

i own this game and it is amazing...i may have been born outside its timeframe, but i still play it all the time...
MusicEqualsLove77 2 years ago
This really is an awesome game. for them to put this complex fun and balanced game together in the late 80's when most games were about as deep as a puddle is amazing. I remember winning some matches agains my 4th grade friends that would last all day. very satisfying

i am bidding for this game right now on an auction site, wish me luck!!! I also want musha but its around $200!!!!!! :-(
paulspydar 2 years ago
MUSHA is defiately not worth it. I prefer shooters on the Sega Saturn like Radiant Silvegun. I tried MUSHA but I could not get into it. Nor its sequel on sega CD.
phonedork 2 years ago
MUSHA is DEFINATELY worth it if you have a wii, on the virtual console.

wasnt marks favorite genesis game Musha ?

How do you guys play this? I had this game for ages and I still get my ass kicked in the very first level.
SAGAIA2 2 years ago
Its really hard ! Best to play it against a friend. Some of our highschool-era battles lasted 6, 8 even 10 HOURS !!
The Sega Genesis transformer & machine would get REALLY HOT then!!

I'll never forget when I picked up Herzog Zwei for $9 from a bargain bin at "The Good Guys" the same year it released in the U.S. It was the best money I ever spent. Zwei got me loving strategic war games like Dune: Battle for Arrakis.
Grooveraider 3 years ago
Many people always say Dune II was the first to invent the RTS genre, but imo it was Herzog Zwei. (I loved both games btw)
neonana74 3 years ago
That's hilarious, Herzog Zwei was out long before the Dune strategy games.
Grooveraider 3 years ago
I know, but many video game magazines don't seem to share our opinion. For them the RTS genre starts with Dune II, for me it starts with Herzog Zwei. Maybe there was even a niche product I didn't know that had the first RTS elements.
neonana74 3 years ago
Oh god, my favorite gaming magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly gave Herzog Zwei such low ratings that year in their Review Crew section - I was pissed. Trust me, there were no other RTS games like Zwei at the time. But then the RTS games started springing up on the PC Engine. NEC soon got Nectaris / Military Madness and a few others before Dune II.

If only they'd bring it back on XBox Live Arcade!

I probably would by a Xbox with Xbox live subscription only to play that

Look, I'm the baddest Herzog Zwei player that ever lived. If you want to challenge me, I live near Charlotte, NC. Feel free to message me here if you dare to challenge!
InstructorChris 3 years ago
Herzog Zwei is, indisputably, a must-play. The kind of thing where you just quit your websurfing and review reading, give the game some time to learn how to play, and probably end up adding it to your list of personal favorites.
The fact that it hasn't appeared on any services like GameTap, XBLA, or the Virtual Console is disappointing.
I wish it could've been in Sega Genesis Collection (though it would've been 3rd-party) along with Toejam & Earl, which was absent for no good reason.

i just bought this game together with a genesis here in japan for 50USD. it really rocks!

With so many online games and MMORPGs available, its amazing that no one has used the concept of this game to make an online RTs.
Just thinking of what could be done with this game, with the potential for improved A.I. and interface (imagine a DS version; that could totally trump any other RTS by having you controlling the robot/jet AND being able to point and click on the map using the pen).

i have to say you dont see that great of a player. constantly running out of fuel, not dropping off soldiers to take over closer enemy bases.
my brother and i played this game a ton and i think we would wipe the floor with you :)

you should do a matchup and air it on yt then.

I would love to see this game get a retro remake, enhace graphics and mabey add more varied scenarios but keep the interface top down and classic.
JonnyAMax 3 years ago
This game looks amazing. I dont care for the music of it though, but a lot of genesis games didnt have very good music so that's okay (Though the ones that did had AWESOME music)

Herzog Zwei is one of the first RTS games in the world produced in 1989. That title itself makes the game kickass up-to-date.
