Yes, you can get harps that don't use animal products.
Modern harps use modern man made glues - older instruments used to use glue made from animal bones.
Strings: bass strings are wire. Mid range and treble strings on modern pedal harps tend to be GUT (sheep). Some harpists (such as vegan harpists) will use nylon or synthetic gut (also known as carbon fiber strings).
Can I just say how very jealous I am of mungoesmad! I wish I was on a boat in the sunset listening to this!
This piece is very beautiful and she plays it very sensitively. By the way, adding to the shoes/bare feet debate, I much prefer bare feet and I find I have better control of the pedals and they don't bang so much becuase i can hook my toes around them and therefore push them with more control. But thats just my experiance, very interested to know what the rest of you think :)
Its my experience as a male harpist to prefer bare feet, though it can be a strange feeling while performing. Male shoes can often be wider, especially near the toe, making it harder to accurately control the pedals.
I'm anchored up in my boat on a beautiful evening watching the sun set trying out my any where internet dongle thing. Seagulls are swirling all around me in some sort of feeding frenzy. then I hit the key and listen to this, I thought I was in heaven.
I am a harpist and I know how long it takes to learn and to perfect a song. Dont worry about what JohnLee said about the shoes. I also play songs without my shoes.
Harp solos (in this case, an etude) are not "songs," they are "pieces." Songs, most often, have lyrics and are sung. I agree with John Lee: harpists should (must) wear shoes, and for good reason. You can't pedal accurately and with any speed in bare feet without "banging" the pedals (which Miss Llywelyn did in a few spots). That's caused by not having proper leverage from the heel to the ball of the foot, which shoes provide. Her watch strap distracted from the overall effect.
Ouch, bare feet @_@;; I tried it once and it hurt... then again, my feet hurt so much because I walked around all day... Anyway, beautiful music. Play some more.
Nothing wrong with bare feet. Well, maybe socks would be nice. Anyhow, I had a teacher make me wear shoes, and it was a pain because of my male wide feet. My new teacher, principal harpist for DSO goes with "What works to create best sound,"
Such sublime playing, is Mali going to tour in England at all? I'd love to be able to see her. Glad to see genuine artistry, especially at such a formal event. Beautiful.
Just realized you were only sixteen at the time of this recording, how amazing! Let us know when you will next be playing in London, because I want to bring the whole family to hear you play. Best wishes!

I have a question about the harp-
How the heck do you memorize where ALL those strings are, don't they get mixed up??!!
johnnyfighter 3 years ago
There are different colored strings - all Cs are red, and all Fs are black. It's quite easy once one has the hang of it. ;-)
