  • Kurt Cobain used a DS-2.

  • Lol thanks man i was so close to buying that grunge pedal.

  • i got the ds 1

  • @stntunes ok now find the guy that made this video and throw it in his face

  • I will use a Ibanez DS7 and a Weeping Demon Ibanez Wah pedal

  • This guys a retard....Kurt Cobain used a Boss DS-2 and a DS-1 but he favoured a ds-2 with the diablo mod....Along with his Jagstang and several other amps.

  • @BROCKMAN211 True, Kurt used a DS-2, it can be seen in a lot of shows and lots of websites, this guy is nuts.

  • @joneunderground He used a DS-2 for the In Utero tour and album. But he used the DS-1 on Bleach and Nevermind

  • what would the settings be for Smells like teen spirit on the Boss pedal??

  • So is it that actual Boss DS1 that you're holding in your hand that will give me the Nirvana sound, or can any DS1 at my local store do the same job?

  • i hate how he doesn't even show you the sound.

  • This guy looks a lot and sounds like Jon Lajoie (show me your genitals) but with long hair!

  • the first one is my favorite the big muff ahahah 0:36

  • HAHA LOOK AT THAT GAP BETWEEN HIS TEETH LOL!!!!! reminds me of that asshole off of the show the office lol

  • It's about money. Lots of short videos = more total video views = greater advertising revenue. Behold the wonders of capitalism!!!

  • @SterilizeThePopulace Kurt Cobain would be proud

by the way....... I'm being ironic ;)

  • wtf do you have between the main teeth lol hahah

  • Thumbs up if you laughed at "Big Muff"

  • Cliff burton uesd Big muff

  • i love how he has the original versions of the pedals and not the ones that are for sale nowadays

  • BIG MUFF--IN!! xD

  • Kurt Cobain hate the Grunge Pedal ... once buy that pedal but he destroy whit the crowd

  • this is such bull he actually used a big muff this guy is retarded

  • great teacher but should make just 1 or 2 clips not 5 thanks anyway

  • @1killerbilly

5? they have up 18 just for teen spirit!!

  • i have the ds-1 distortion i didnt even know kurt or any grunge bands had used it until i started playing with the pedal alot i got it pretty cheap too at guitar center it was 10 bucks and its reliable as hell i recommend the ds-1

  • Just wondering, can u use a distortion pedal to a ampifiler that does not have a distortion function?

  • @MickeFenix yea you can....thats what my setup is =)

  • @ezcapftw Thanks for the answer! XD

  • @MickeFenix your welcome =P

  • oh too late! i already bought the grunge pedal. but i thought it workedpretty well

  • Alwsome Help! Thanks Man! GO NIRVANA!!!

  • Wrong...he used DS2 Turbo Distortion!

  • @Georg1986 no actually he used ds1 more often

  • @Georg1986

He used DS1 and he used the DS2 sometimes around the in utero era

  • he has a big gap in between his 2 front teeth haha. I love this series though

  • can you make a video for Lithium-Nirvana?

  • hey im getting a guitar 4 my birthday and i wanna learn how 2 play Nirvana songs and i would like 2 sound a bit like thm......so can any1 plz recommend sum equipment like wat pedals 2 get, wat amp 2 get, and what kinda guitar......THNX! :]

  • you should take Marshall for amp and for guitar. ..a Gibson or Fender...my favourite guitar and the best in my opinion is Gretch Duo by Gibson and SG...

  • @ArtemhPlacebo No. Just no.

There are brands other than gibson, fender and marshall. And lets not forget that they all cost $1000-$2000 dollars.

Kissmyshoe should get a a cheap ibanez, epiphone or squier. A humbucker would be good too.

As for amps, old crates are good. And tube amps are always the best. Look out for a blue voodoo or modern bugera amps. If that's too pricey, then look at peavey vyprs and roland cubes.

Look at behringer and danelectro pedals. Great bang for the buck.

  • @mcconnachiea ok but you should reply to KissMyShoePlz because he's not gonna see your reply now...and i was just telling my opinion but you now best..:)

  • whichever guitar you buy you will for definetly want one with a humbucker pickup, a humbucker looks like two pickups side by side touching each other. its is especially good for distortion.

  • which one of these fucking lessons is the fucking song? fuck your advertisements and fuck your stupid hat FUUUCCCKKK!

  • i wish u would just make 2 long vids rather than have 47 clips on how to play this 1 song

  • You looks like someone I saw in a movie oO haha but that's true :P

  • holy crap thats the pedal i had since i was 11 lol

  • excuse my nooby question, but i have a simple semi-acoustic guitar....can i get distortion by using that box or from the amp itself?

  • You have to use an amp. The order is: guitar-cable-box-cable-amp. Did I get your question right?

  • i mean to ask if there's any way i can get distortion off my semi-acoustic guitar. Using box will be costlier...can i get similar/low-quality distortion from an amplifer itself?

  • Ok, sorry. So, generally it's possible, but you shouldn't put too much distortion on it for it'll produce too muc h noise (that's what mine does). You just need an amp with a gain, distortion or overdrive channel, but pedals produce a more individual sound.

Examples: Nirvana-The Man who sold the world (Solo), any Marcy Playground live

  • thanks for the help, i might just try it at a store

  • @Abhyyt

Yeah you can. Just get a sound hole cover. Check out the Lute hole cover site, they have pretty good covers for a cheap price

  • man i have this petal is great also kurt cobain use ds -2! and i want buy that big muff!

  • areRP55 distortion pedals good?its got a built in tuner, 80 effects, drum machine and more. bought for $150 was $250!!! I use it on a fender startocaster(mexican made)(not squire!!!!) and the amp is an SP-10 squire amp!

  • hey i am looking for a good amp thats not to much money and dose not make a really annoying buzzy sound that is louder then the guitar can someone help me???

  • @cremeens100

yeah. peavey viper, alot of different sounds and effects. awesome sound, no buzz. $350 - $550 (depending on what sizze you get)

  • @cremeens100 line 6 man

  • @mysticvintage

    Just as you.

  • he says use your distortion on your amplifier, but mine has none, or maybe it has, i don`t know, the equalizer knobs makes just minor differences so,

to get a real good sound, would someone mind instructing me..?.

    the knobs:

    level

    eq: low, mid, and high

    lead gain: supersat, post.

    voicing: bottom, edge

    and reverb level

  • Where it says lead gain are your distortion settings. On my amp I have to set my pre-grain(I think it's supersat on yours) to 10 and my guitars volume nob to 10 to get any dist. The post-gain nob is like the volume nob for that specific channel. Voicing as far as I know is like a warm vintage feel or a "sharper" modern tone(though it makes little difference on my amp). The reverb I believe keeps the same note going forever. I'm still a guitar noob so take what I say with a grain of salt.

  • @Lydomina thanks! the only thing i knew where that post were volume... i`ll try it out=3

  • gain is like distorsion

  • that`s what all the other vids say, but the supersat knob which is under where it says lead gain only make minor differences, but thanks anyway! =3

  • ROFL PAUSE AT 0:06

    funny posistion haha

    good vid though man

  • no one cares about bon jovi i could have made a better album called slippery when wet

  • Syklenut41

YOU LOOK LIKE A JERK TO ME!!

  • alright alright pause it at 1:12 and proceed to rofl

  • YOU LOOK LIKE A MONKEY!!!

  • im gonna buy a ds1 right now

  • expert vilage = not very helpful

  • hahaha take that digitech! 0:28

  • I got that grunge pedal damn near ten years ago it can sound good with other pedals and a really expensive amp. But yeah dont play it thru a shit amp or you'll want to kick yourself for buying it. The ds-1one is good as a starting point it's got a good dry crunch but as always a good amp is key to really hear the power of any effects pedal.

  • im looking to get a boss ds-1 people say its crap and the tone sucks. is this true?

  • it's a copy of cranked marshall amp. i like it and if it's good enough for kurt cobain it's good enough for me

  • does it work with a line6 spider 3 15 watt?

  • Yes- any pedal works with ant amp.

  • no i mean some pedals sound like crap with a low output amp

  • yes but for Grunge this is great

  • It is an awesome pedal but I prefer my Boss MD-2. When you first get it you will think it sucks but you just have to fool around with setting.

  • depends on what kinda music u like, if ur looking for a nirvana /grunge sound get

  • The grung pedal is too nasal sounding.

  • BOSS DS bitch!

  • grunge pedal??? jajjjajajajajajajaja

  • if you guys want really distorsion get a guitar and play through a bass amp thats wat nirvana did

  • i always do, and it sounds fuckin awesome, i get amazing tone through my old Peavey amp

  • if anyone wants to know his DS -1 settings: volume = full, gain = full, tone = anywhere between 11 - 3 (mostly about 11). he also used a sans amp classic pedal to get his sound.

  • kurt used the DS2 mostly people, not what this guy says.

  • no no no he used the DS-1 for Bleach, Nevermind, and Incesticide. He used a DS-2 for In Utero.

  • oh right yea sorry i did jump the gun!

  • Well, no. he used the DS-1 on bleach, and nevermind. he used it live and all around, up until 1992 when he bought the DS-2 but he didn't like it as much and only used it for the man who sold the world from unplugged in new york. he may have used it on some songs on in utero, but his main distorition there was the tech 21 sansamp classic. and for "guitarskater11", for incesticide, they didn't even use their own gear. TAD was out to lunch so they used TAD's gear. No DS-1 there, buddy.

  • just get a digitech distortion factory 7 different models including the boss, and big muff, awesome petal by the way(:

  • Lay Jabba No Botha

  • What is the difference between MXR distortion plus and distortion mxr?

and what is the function in terms of sound MXR distorsion plus?

  • pelotudo mira hasta donde me seguis jajajajajaja

  • exelent!

  • hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha lmfao the BIG MUFF

  • haha, yeah :D

  • lol junk

  • lol big balls at 0:34

  • lolololllolol

  • Maybe a Les Paul copy (yeah, I know he used a mustang, but it's a ballache putting a humbucker in) through a DS-1, small clone and into something like a Fender twin?

  • I got the exact sound with the DS-1 BOSS pedal. Im using a Line 6 amp and Schecter C-1 Hellraiser guitar. Sound is almost identical. I highly recommend it to anybody who wants the Nirvana sound or even just a unique sound. It puts out more than the Nirvana tone.

  • lol pause at 1:37

  • come on.......tone comes from your fingertips..........

  • AHH! Oh...phew! for a split second there I thought that was Awg.

  • 00:41 to 00:48 what the heck did ya do to your big muff!? Somebody's been bootleggin EH products! Either that or you've beaten the shit so hard outta it that it went from the platinum box O' GOD, and turned into the brown box.

  • the big muff he showed has been discontinued for quite a few years... its a russian big muff pi the precursor to the black russian big muff pi available now.. the american big muff pi that ur referring too is a reissue as well..

  • Yeah. I took a look on google after watching, so I got a glimpse of the Russian model. Lol. My mistake. But still, it looks bootlegged or somethin does it not? I think it's kinda kool.

  • yeah they're pretty strange looking in comparison lol

  • big muff lol

  • Any one have good settings for the DS1 to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?

  • tone:5-7 level 6-8 dist all the way up. =)

  • I think that you need something with more sustain for that song...having the DS-1 myself, i dont think it will do for that kind of songs...try mixing the DS-1 with the boost channel of your amplifier. Put the gain of your amp really low, and the same with your stompbox, so that you will combine them to make another distortion. Feel free to try different settings on your own until you find the one that you like. Hope i helped mate

  • But that is just my own opinion man. As the guy in the video says, Cobain used the DS-1 a lot, but i couldn't produce that sound with that alone, no matter how much i tried, so i ended up mixing it with my amp's boost (distortion). It became like....more dirty, and i really like it! Then...i also have the MT-2 metal zone, but i think its too heavy for that kind of music....its great for thrash metal like metallica and stuff though..

  • lol people say that metal zone pedal makes a buzzy sound that is shit for metallica. Actually they use normal boss distortion pedals

  • Fuckin 100 videos on one Smells Like Teen Spitrit? Man.... yo could teach this in one vid 10 minutes and 100% less talking....

  • YES!!! Thank you! Finally someone said it!! I can already play the song and it's pissing me off. Actually I don't know why I keep watching them. I guess I'll stop.

  • pause at 1:25 LMFAO

  • the ds-1 is 39.00 dollars i might get one with my sg

  • There 10:00 dollar ones on eBay!

  • cool

  • Big Muff lmfaooooooooo

  • ive got those nobs on my amp :)

  • pretty much every amp does. but in smells like teen spirt and a ton of other rock songs there are clean parts that switch to distorted parts and you obviously cant bend down and hit your amp everytime you have to switch

  • You have a "suck" and "shit" knob on your amp?

  • Comment removed

  • no I do not Since I do not play nirvana KCwannabeKC

  • Well, I have never seen a "suck" or "shit" knob on any amp before.

    So it must be you.

  • haha, nice one

  • I have the DOD and Digitech forms of the grunge pedal...it's not really for crunchy tone like Cobain used, it's more a screeching tone like J Mascis liked. If you doubt that, check out Nirvana's MTV performance of Endless Nameless; Cobain used a grunge pedal on that, hated it. It's really best for solos because it gives you screaming articulation and basically infinite sustain. It just has too much pure fuzz to be used for normal rhythm and riffing. The pedals he showed are good, though.

  • Kurt had a DS-1 through most of his life. He did have a DS-2 at around the In Utero time period, but he still preferred the DS-1

  • he used both a DS-1 and DS-2

  • Kurt Cobain didnt use a Boss DS-1, He used A Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion........Ds-1 is still a good pedal.

  • big muff lmao

  • pause at 1:08... he looks so stoned

  • not really

  • id be ashamed if he wasnt

  • Blergh! What was I talking about?

I mean, I know it's the one Kurt used, so I need to get one.

  • I can't find a damned Boss distortion pedal. Sold out in the UK big time. I can't find one anywhere.

I know that's not the one Kurt used, but it sounds good, or so I heard.

  • no, kurt only used a rat on territorial pissings and drain you. and that was only in the studio

  • were do u plug in the effect pedals

  • between your guitar and the amplifier

  • between ur gtar and nostrils

  • My dad said i have $100 to spend on a pedal for christmas. I'm looking for something really crunchy. Can anyone help?

  • I'd recomend either the Double Muff by EH or The Grunge by Digitech, regardless of what he said the Grunge is a really good allaround pedal so is the double muff.

  • Marshall Jackhammer isn't bad. Not sure of the price though

  • or the sort of "new" "Little Big Muff" from EH Electro Harmonix, it doesn't take as much space as a Big Muff, and still has a good sound. or a Super Fuzz of some sort :P

  • 100$ try 300

  • To me the Danelectro Black licorice pedal is badd ass for me, but its for metal not grunge but what do I know, haha. i like classic rock.

  • kurt used a rat

  • Is he showing the russian version of big muff?

  • fuck you man

    i love my digitech grunge

  • Just google Kurt's Equipment.. =)

  • Only Japan made DS-1s are great, the new ones are pure shit in my opinion.

  • kurt used the ds2

  • and the ds1

  • very nice review, exactly what i wanted to know.

  • hahaahah

  • i had the ds-1 =)

  • would a rat distortion get you that sound

  • yeah probably

  • boss ds-1 is ok i just dont think it is loud enough like you have to mess with your amp to get it good sounding

  • hi joe check out my first vid where i cover 3 different nirvana songs

  • i actually like the sound of my Dinosaur "Black box" as i call it. however i take interest in that grunge pedal looks and sounds cool from demos i've heard

    anyway, rock on dudes! peace.

  • but now i think ill replace it with a Boss

DS-1 i heard every single distortion pedal that's out there and i've decided the Boss

    DS-1.

  • i think the DS-2 is better because its footswichable. you can have your rythum and solo tone with 1 pedal

  • Hi joe I dont know a nother way be sides this to talk to you because Im a kid and very un expirenst with the net . so I dont kow were to go to get email . because I want to mabe write to you a little bit and complement on stating me on the guitar . so again could you mabe give me your email you just haft to send it to my youtube. thank you for your time

  • are you all dumb?...DS-2 turbo!! that was kurts fav pedal thats the nirvana sound!...he only used the ds-1 early on like on bleach....

  • btw, Kurt had his DS-1 all set to max, except tone, which was ta 1 o'clock.

  • that sound sucks on my pedal it is VERY thin and digital sounding.
