  • why nuts and bolts? why not just use screws?

  • @snowboarderrx nuts and bolts secure it better in my experience doing diy stuff for my camera.

  • I like it good job...

  • I built this jib and my onyl question is alot of the weight and strain seems to be on the lazy suzan piece. Ive yet to add counter weight to the other side but i hope that will ease it. if not it seems like the lazy suzan is going to pop of from the weight. Any suggestions to make the center pivot piece reinforced?

  • Nice until I saw the test film...

  • Looks WAY to rickety. Not fluid at all.

Much better tutorials out there that use better parts from common household electronics for around the same price.

  • at the begining of these videos im all like "yeah i can probably do this" and at the end i always think F**K why is this so hard

  • I miss Jared in the final BFX Episode

  • 3/8ths Drillbit Taylor

  • tHIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN NEEDING MAN THANK YOU!!!

  • Bet old Norm Abram will be making one next..

I think if I was making one I use box Aluminium. Also I see no way of altering the angel of the camera when use it, i.e. if you wish to keep some thing in shot or wish to pan as rising....

I do hate it when there is music on in the background its sucks.....

  • @devonmale69 At 5:19, he says that you can use a wingnut on the top center support to take out the bolt and tilt the camera.

  • @Rhoran If you remove the top bolt it will not be very steady it will need a slot hole so you can have the top bolt fixed but not tight on the wood, use a nylock nut, and then you can tilt BUT this is still using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. much over the top in how its made Aluminium box much better.

  • If you want something a little more professional I sell all metal camera crane jibs (£95) - check out my channel

  • "Warptest one...?" :)

  • haha, i love the test film xD

  • You guys should put all the needed stuff into the description so we dont have to try to write it down while watching. thanks much! great video!

  • it's gonna be a bit of work to mobile this bulky stuff around. something detachable in the body will be worth more of the overall function.

  • I built one of these and it works. It's plenty strong enough to support any prosummer camera. Remember it's a bunch of 2x4s that are holding up your house right now. As for the jackass talking about load rated- if you can afford one that is buy it. If your on a near zero budget like a lot of us this one works great and is plenty strong. One word of advice is get a good turntable that has no slack in it it makes a big difference in its performance

  • If you need a longer jib arm just add another set of 2x3x8's to the current jib arm and add some middle supports! It made mine just over 15 feet, works great I use it in my schools auditorium to film live events with multiple cameras...

although when you put a 15-20 pound camera at the end plus a motorized pan tilt head the amount of counter weight you need is insane! so i had to extend the rear jib assembly (part that holds counter weight) about three feet. So my weights had more leverage.

  • jerry's a beast, where is he now?

  • @willtruslow Who's jerry?

  • @mg0930mg the guy whos giving the tutorial?

  • @willtruslow That's Jared...

  • this it a pretty cool project but the weight it should be able to support would be like a pair of sneakers....It's a bunch of bullshit, and none of it is load rated.

  • @cartercl I built one and it can support and easy 30lbs. I bet some 2x4s are holding your weight right now- it's what housed are built of. As for load rated - get real it works and is plenty strong all for under $50

  • This is too cool. Just what I need. Big thanks!!

  • brilliant

if i could build, i'd so build that

loved the short at the end, very thought-provoking

  • Nice job for a wooden crane. I was just wondering; have you ever bent one of those 3" screws and then drove the Phillips head driver through a finger? I now use one of them fancy pants driver drill magnetic extentions with a sleeve so as not to perforate my digits any more. Just a thought after watching the build.

  • At 0:16 it sounds like he says : 'For Bitch!'

  • you need a counterweight

  • 0:01

  • Am building mine with PVC to hold an SLR or small handy cam for school musicals ect. Might mount it to a tripod for portablilty

  • What about if you are wanting to make a 10ft or a 12ft jib arm? Where and how fare down do go on the arm for the center post of the arm?

  • dont forget to paint it black for coolness ;)

  • there are not 2x3 bords....there is only 2x4s unless u rip one then u will have a 2x3 bord

  • It sounds like steve singing in the background!

  • Is that a Jib crane or Noah's freaking Arc? You could lift a car with that thing or give rides to small children. How about using some metal electrical conduit? (10ft = $2) With the lighter arm you could just fab a plate that attaches directly to an existing tripod and use that for your panning.

  • Goooood building one :D

  • at 00:37 is says a couple 1 and someting ones, what does that say?

  • @teckcode1 It's been 2 months, but if you're still wondering, the full plans are in the link on the description.

Great plans btw Indymogul, I'm probably going to use these.

  • thanks that really helped 2 make my own crane but i don't think i will use ur exact design tho.

  • thank u very much, i made this and my films are as pro as pro can be, lol, keep up the good work 5/5

  • put some wheels under that baby n damn!

  • @Emovamp64 omg dude your on to something!!!

  • lol xD

  • nice but where the hell am i going to store it

  • @SlimVideos562 Pocket.

  • Just build one using these plans, modifying slightly, great tutorial!

  • thats awsome...but that shit must weigh heavy as hell!!

  • Fucking A.

  • 5 stars - saved as favorite

  • ahahaha

  • argh,

    i love this tutorial.

But why aren't there any blueprints in dutch?

  • oh you mean dinkin hurkan fleacel bogirin

  • You're not making a canoe!

  • well made video.

    Im gonna try it

  • where can i get the song used in the first half of this video

  • it comes with final cut studio.

  • Why are people giving this guy's comment thumbs down? He answered the person's question. If someone asked where he or she could get a Ferrari, and I said "At a Ferrari dealer," would I also get thumbs down?

Someday, if you're really serious about filmmaking, you're going to have to put up the money for Final Cut, Premiere or Avid. Do you really think Martin Scorcese is going to use Windows Movie Maker on his next film?

  • @mattofwashington i know, lol'z ferrari thats gold

  • @mattofwashington

Martin Scorcese's editor uses Lightworks. Now open source and free. fcp.co/final-cut-pro/news/109-will-fcp-be-killed-off-by-open-source-lightworks

  • when you make the center piece, theres the crease between the two 24" 2x4's and so you cant drill the holes for the legs on the side because its there. you need to make new holes in the hinge or be offset if it works for you

  • if I could download all my thoughts to a computer would my memories of you young love be considered child porn...ROFL!

  • wat is the song at 6:17

  • Wow that was one of the best instructional videos i've seen, Funny Short Steve!

  • Great tips. Awful shorts.

  • Great tutorial. Don't matter, wood or metal. Just use what we see in video and do what one likes.

Done. I'm going to go for steel so this tutorial helped a lot.

  • i made a jib like this it works pretty good thanks for tutorial

  • This one is great!

  • Awesome!

  • I had to press pause. THANK YOU THANK YOU for actually taking your time in the tutorial!!!! Keep making them very detailed, and slow so the average person can understand!!

  • lol thats steve nelson singing in the background!

    :D

  • WOW i am gonna make a k'nex version of this :P

  • you rock indy mogul

  • Thanks for this tutorial!

  • Is Steve singing? cos it sounds pretty much like him

  • I agree with you that wood is cheaper and easier to work with. But with metal you get a much more elegant look, and it doesn't look as clumsy as wood.

The design is good but i would use metal instead of wood. Different people, different taste :)

  • how much does one of those cost in all to build?

  • $80

  • Have you forgotton that you need to put weights on the other end, for more stabile shots-?

  • Shakey Camera and confusing video compared to the blueprints ont he website.

  • you guys are the best! thank you so much

  • why use wood why not metal or plastic?

  • wood , stronger than most plastic, it's easier to work with than metal and its cheapo :)

  • But it's not exactly lightweight as aluminium, and it's ugly xD

  • actually i think it looks nice, but metal is hard to work with on a project like this can i's expensive,(30 for an aluminium rod vs 2 for a 2x4x8

  • very nicely put together and built and good video, but for how shakey it is you might as well just hold it... or use aluminum

  • is that steve in the backround?

  • no its john Stewart

  • Great, thanks! About what I was thinking, and good to see the tech aspects on video.

  • i see you are a major woodwork fan...otherwise you would have used metal

  • when are you going to upload the instructions on how to build a trojan horse

  • also the print instructions vary from this video... should definitely fix that

  • some of the materials are such a bitch to obtain

  • Where can I get the blue print of this?

  • great video. just wondering, because i have no idea, thats why im asking; is wood really the best choice for this or would metal be better?

  • The allways use metal, aluminium for this. its stronger, and more sollid. Wood is to flexible, and isnt as strong as a metal cunstruction.:)

  • that bitch aint level. be nice to have a spirit and a loose head.

  • Can you tilt and/or pan the camera?

  • I'm a complete newbie but the effect of that big sweeping motion of the final film is stunning.

  • I just finished building one, and it rocks. Great tutorial guys, keep up the awesome work!

  • but the whole point is so you don't have to buy a professional one...

  • @CaptainsKiddProd do you know how much the pro ones cost? over 1.5 k

  • Oh my god! that's steve Nelson singing in the background isn't it :p ha ha!

  • Can you just use a tripod that you already have, and make the same jib for it? Just curious. Thanks for doing that video!

  • they just made a vid on onwe you can

  • OH my! crazzzy! :D

  • that thing is a slick trick, wood is good. Steve, the inside of your head is a scary place :)

  • Great job with the jib... funniest test film ever!!!

  • Steve makes the best test films! I want to take a hetero- nap with him.

  • check out matthijskeuper's video called "camera crane" he made a 16-foot one for $60 that has pan & tilt! he also has test videos

  • Note to self: Download proper instructions as well as video and hire carpenter quick!

I can't handle wood for shit... couldn't even make a birdhouse in 8th grade

  • best test film ever

  • I have the same question has lol838: Can it fold up? Also, is there a way the wheels could be attached? For easy transport and finally: Instructions? I couldn't get everything from the video.

  • THAT SHIT'S SO FUCKIN SICK!!!!!!!!

  • Best weekend extra to date. 5 stars.

  • were can i buy one ^^

  • A very useful vid. If amybody is interested then come by my channel and see my short, Dead Things.

  • that test film was funy but quite weird lol

  • awesome

  • is that steve nelson singing in the back?

  • yes it is him and his friends playing.

  • can it fold up so it doesnt take alot of space up?

  • great tutorial but christ, do i want one. i think ill pray for one cos i am way too lazy to make one myself!

  • hot For Words music?

  • lol "my young love be considered child porn?"!!!! LMAO

  • o.o i watch the video like 5 times and i still dont understand it lol but it looked kool at the end and probly helps im just too lazy to make it lol

  • Really cool

  • Wow, this would totally be worth the effort.

  • wow...cool

  • For the film maker with a few bucks to spare and alot of time, this is quite handy. Clearly for those wishing to become more professional.

  • well good, complex though!

  • (part four)The bottom line is that this is NOT a DIY project. Anybody who attempts this is going to need a carpenter, at least one strong friend to help out, and plenty of cash ($80?? Wow...lumber must be cheap in New York) for the lumber and the tools they may not have. This guy did a great job, don't get me wrong, but he has the skill...and IndyMogul.

  • good thing i post regularely to the indy mogul forums so i can answer anyone's questions or solve anyone's problems during their attempt to build this thing! seriously. if anyone has any problems building this, post your question to the forum and i'll help you out...it is my design after all.

  • (part four)The bottom line is that this is NOT a DIY project. No way. Between the costs involved and the help someone would need, this is a group project. A very DIFFICULT group project, not to mention time-consuming. The carpenter built a great crane, there's no doubt of that, but he had the skill, money and tools to do it.

  • Robtran, you are not wrong when you say that this is a complicated and time consuming project, but to be honest your assumption that only a trained carpenter can do it is quite wrong, and your exceedingly long winded rant was unnessecary.

  • (part three)How do I know all this? Both my grandfather and greatgrandfather were old school Master Carpenters. They taught me a lot, and if they were alive today and standing next to me, they'd be laughing even harder. I don't get it: You guys put a heavy-duty disclaimer every time Erik does some makeup, but this has no disclaimer whatsoever. Strange.

  • relax relax, the plans will be on the indymogul blog sometime on monday with the full detail. and to be honest, photographing the steps and parts and writing the thorough post itself will take longer than the mere 4-ish hours it took to build the entire jib itself from a bundle of wood and a single bag of parts.

  • My grand father too was a carpenter in his functional years and let me be honest though it does require some skill and tools, with proper safety precautions (aka comon sense)and well planned directions it's workable.

  • (part two)That kind of skill has to be taught. Anyone who attempts this project without the requisite skills is going to end up with a unworkable mess. Also, you'd better have either a carpenter friend with an awesome set of tools or a Platinum Mastercard, because ALL the tools shown here are very expensive. Oh yeah, and using them isn't like picking a hammer or a screwdriver - they're use is not self-evident.

  • (part one)ATTENTION: Do NOT even attempt this build unless you or someone you know who can help you is at least a journeyman-level carpenter!!

I've always dug what you guy's post here, and this is no different but this video is EXTREMELY misleading. The diagrams alone take a highly specialized skill. And the way the carpenter just casually says "Find the center" for various pieces of wood made me laugh out loud.

  • Finding the center of anything is really quite simple. It's a matter of measuring. or do I have to be a carpenter to measure as well?

  • Hey it's Me Andrew, thanks for getting around to my request! I have always wanted to know how to make one of those bad boys! :p

  • looks like a curse aka work-i'm glad you did it, why would i,looks like i don't have to.

    thank you

  • Very cool!

  • cool but i think a regular person would have trouble doing this.....i think im going to hire a carpenter show him this video and pay him to do it

  • or just hire a local jib owner/operator with remote controls for pan/tilt/dutch focus/iris/zoom, self leveling head etc :)

  • Hmmm....build your own jib for under 100 that you can use whenever, or go out and pay someone with better equipment....yeah, it all maters about your budget and time

  • Turn off the music during narrations.

  • No one will ever need? I'm not sure you understand how many filmmakers use this tool, and how many independent filmmakers wish they had one at their disposal.

  • no kidding... i'd kill for one of these right now... gives your movies alot of production value and a great look.

    -Brent

  • This is definitely a cheap and semi-simple design in comparison to the real deal. You'll need the tools and some carpenter experience, but this would be a great thing to have.

  • nice but u can find cheep noob ones on ebay for like 50 bucks

  • Great tutorial, thanks!

  • hows bout a weekend update for a diy 35mm adapter?

  • here here! (wow that sounded gay! never again....sorry)

  • Wow Thx Guy's I've bin waiting 4 ever to get a tutorial like this one Awesome !!!!!! :D

  • Nice DIY

  • Could we perhaps get a strong PVC version of the jib-arm?

  • Wow, if I had the energy or time to make a Jib arm. I would totally be at Bunnings right now.

  • nice

  • LMFAO!

  • cool!

  • lol! hilarious test film!

  • memories of young love be considered child porn? lol

  • lol great test film, and great tutroial. I probably wont make use of this, im only 14, but im sure this info s idispendable to some. Good work!

  • This is a great tutorial!!!

But this guy who does weekend extra every now and then is so incredibly boring!
