I never realized what an idiot eddie was until I saw this video. He used to be one of my favorite payers growing up. I know he was high as a kite in this video! I couldn't believe some of the stuff he was saying!
Stoned, drunk or a little of both? He's high man...when he was asked about other guitar players and couldn't think of any, the interviewer should have mentioned SRV.
Has anybody ever really believed EVH when he bitches about DLR or Sammy not being able to hold it together and being amicable to band mates?? Listen to this idiot. He's fucking hammered or high or both. And hey, Eddie, can you put the cigarette down for 30 seconds while a professional attempts to interview you. What a pig.
@WIStreetKings You are right on the money..........he has the intellect of a 10yr old...Also he hasn't played anything relevant in the last 25 yrs..................He likes drinking more than playing the guitar and it shows.............
Gee, I wonder why he has problems with keeping people in his band. I idolized this guy when I was a kid and he is a gifted guitarist. It's sad. Alcohol doesn't make you a jerk. It actually amplifies the person you really are. Eddie is a jerk. Jerk + alcohol = bigger jerk.
@rfd73 i agree weed limits your creative ability. i find it will make me more daring with my improv and do thing. i wouldnt normally do. but to write songs most people need sobriety.
I think Eddie's best years were the ones when he didn't smoke that much weed...musicians who believe drugs are some sort of leverage shit for improving your style only end up playing in small gigs in shitty bars, and if you think I am talking bullshit just take a look at Jake E. Lee, he is not even the shadow of what he used to be
@thenamesfrancisco you have obviously put no thought into what being called a guitar GOd with hundreds of thousands of screaming fans can do to a persons psyche when unchecked. I feel sorry for the guy.
You have to have some skill to run your fingers through your hair while holding a cigarette between them like Edward did @ 0:58. and being 'high' doesn't hurt.
The only really good thing he said that wasnt an annoying answer was the very last thing. I wonder why Ed never gives credit to Jimmy Page as an influence, there is no doubt in my mind that Page was a huge influence on him, instead Ive heard Ed bag him out, bad blood for some reason..
I think Eddie should have just made his own guitar....from scratch - not just putting pieces together, if he hated everyone else so much. I'm no EVH, but I've played almost every guitar brand out there. Kramer is not it. I think the Charvel model 6 is perhaps the greatest electric guitar of all time. This was 1985...this is now, and he's still a prick. He's a great guitarist but he's lost the friends, family, and fans that loved him. Good luck with that.
@seanmarkeymusic hahahaha!!! eddie was probably a better guitarist than "angus" in his mothers womb!!! thats like saying michelangelo buonarotti stole the idea of chiselling marble from ancient greeks and romans!!!!!!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he wanted to be somewhere else instead of doing this interview. But GODDAMN, HE'S STONED AS FUCK UIAHUAHIUAHIUAHAIHAIU hilarious!
Lmao i fucken love this human being! Its like he makes being a musician seem so damn easy, kinda like mozart did! :0 eddie man thanx for all the music and thanx for such a bad ass album for the new millenium! Good luck the rest of the way! \m/
Charvel Gibson Fender... WELL. Here's the funny thing I doubt that then EVH would think Kramer would be bought by Gibson and I don't think he would know that Charvel would be doing some Art Series and then Fender would do his signature guitar/amps... I bet he had to do a heck of apologizing for this! ;)
@evolutionmb he is higher than the summit of olympus mons on this vid!!!!!!! (thats a volcano on mars thats 5 times bigger than everest, for all you non astronomy enthusiasts...)
You guys need to chill the hell out. Eddie's just having a good time, and hi sense of humor is obviously different than these guys. He's just livin life like he knows it, there's no shame in that.
@gatortailor He has nothing against Clapton. Clapton is Eddie's biggest influence. You ask Eddie to play any solo from any tune Clapton recorded, he'll play it to you note for note exactly like Clapton. If you closed your eyes, you'd think Clapton was playing it.
@gatortailor Eddie's just clearly fucked up in this. This was right after 1984 exploded so he's rolling in drugs and money, He's not being sarcastic against Clapton. He seriously loves him.
I don't care what anyone says. I met him in Houston, Tx on their last tour. He is the nicest guy on the planet. My brother got us backstage passes, VIP, the works, he talked to me hung out with Wolfgang, Alex, and Dave. If their bad people, then they sure didn't show it that night. Plus, they sound better than ever on the ADKOT. Going to see them in New Orleans! Can't wait. And he did so much more for music than anyone of you ever have or will.
I read a 1996 interview where he said he "loved drinking beer for the taste." What a fucking dumbass and a legendary asshole of a person. But I still bought a ticket to see his old prick self because he is that amazing of a guitarist. ;)
@gatortailor Actually, I have been a huge fan of Eddie's since 1979. He inspired me, like a lot of other people, to pick up and learn to play guitar. I love all of Van Halen's music, and am absolutely thrilled to see them back with such a killer album. The fact that EVH is extremely good-looking, is just a bonus :)
Saw Eddie a few days after VH2 came out...Used to think he was a god ...& a guitar god he was/is ....but what a Douche of a human being here...total turn off. & who signed off on that new Tattoo vid .... crap ... Saw Iommi with Heaven & Hell ... that was EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think all the stories about him being an asshole started during the last few years of when Sammy was in the band when they all hated each other, and the during the VH III disaster. He was a pretty bad drunk then. There's youtube vids of him being interviewed on the street while he was just waiting for his car at a valet being a pretty nice guy.
@theheetmizer.....dude....do your homework....he most def played kramers.....his franky is a totally diff guitar than his 5150,,1984,,all his back, ups ect.ect......he played kramers for 11 years or so....like I said DO YOUR HOMEWORK......and yes he,used a kramer neck on his franky....MANY DIFF ONES!!!....hockystick...beak...ect...on the 2
EVH is STONED as a BAT on this video, STONED as a BAT, SEEING double, know seriously EVH is an amazing guitar player but his attitude stinks to the high heavens, people at peavey say he is a horrible man to work with, at 2.25 u see glimpses of how he is now, a pure arrogant twat who thinks he deserves to be center of a tension, he is clearly an excellent guitar player, but he is not a peoples person & as soon as he opens his mouth filth comes out
@LucianoGallagher such a cool guy ? he is a good guitar player, but anyone that knows EVH knows he is not a cool guy, he is 1 of the most arrogant people u will ever meet, the guys at peavey refuse 2work with him, he insults people all the time back the stage, if something is not right he starts calling people useless ect, when peavey asked him 2 do a backstage interview for their new amp he told them to fck off unless he was getting paid what he gets onstage, after they donated 5 free amp heads
@oneshot111222 Yes - on 1991's For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, he plays a song with that exact technique called 'Judgment Day'. You can hear him do it right before he kicks into the solo, at about the 2:49 mark, and again at the end of the song around 4:23.
That someone at 5:52 that Eddie seen doing this pull-off was none other than Jimmy Page. Ed attended a Led Zeppelin concert at the forum in L.A. in 1971 and that's where the idea came from (Note: Eddie was not the first guitarist to tap but he has always been credited for making it popular especially in Van Halen's heyday: The 1980's!)
Ed was always being yelled at by Ted Templeman, Alex or DLR for letting ppl hear music before it was released ( a band named Angel was in the studio recording you really got me after hearing ed's copy) Al wanted Ed to cover up when he tapped before getting signed & he took a ton of shit for doing Beat It. So Ed's being gun shy about what he should be saying. He's high too. Is that Floyd Rose doing the interview?
I love Eddie's playing, but Jesus. Al stuck around out of brotherhood, Michael stuck around because he's a mediocre bassist who was getting a fat paycheck, and DLR bailed because...well...just watch this video. Good grief.
Eddie is one of the greatest of all times, no doubt!! But this is just a good accurate snapshot of how he can be an ass & a straight up liar. He never played a Kramer, he just stuck the sticker on his Frankenstrat. I bought a few Kramers just because of him, I think we all did. I would love a Wolfgang but not at those prices. Give me a Ibanez Jem or a PRS anytime!!
@TheHeetmizer He indeed owned and played many Kramers. As for the frankenstein, when he started his endorsement with kramer he replaced the neck with a kramer neck. The pacer model, and the Baretta are both based off of Eddie's guitars. The pacer being the frankenstrat, and the Baretta being the Hockey stick 5150 Kramer.
STONED!!
