  • Wow. do you know where I can listen to or get the recording that was transcribed from? I heard two other recordings of him playing it, but I think I like what he did in the version you played better.

  • @PianoManSam2 Yeah I'm actually not sure where the recording of this is! I learned this from a book I have of Art Tatum transcriptions, and yeah it's my favorite of his versions of this song, glad you like it!

  • My man you're amazing! Genius actually...

  • 2:49 - 2:53 !!!!!!! wow!

  • I love this version I love all your videos Kylan you are really talented, you inspired me into playing Tiger Rag. I first saw you playing it before l heard Tatum and I never saw anything like it. And so young that inspired me even more.. Thanks for posting!

  • Love your old piano, sounds so authenticly "salooney". Plus your amazin performance.... just premium entertainment. Gift us with more! :)

  • do you have an album yet?

  • Nice work, my friend.

  • Thanks so much!!! I'm all smiles and tapping my foot! Beautiful playing!

  • Nice Job!

I've been working on this one myself and and I can't find the recording for the transcribed performance - do you have it? can you help me find it?

  • I liked the left hand. I thought when the left hand is going, the piece has a nice flow to it, but it often loses it during the rh runs. When Tatum plays, the runs always fit perfectly in the music, which goes to show just how difficult what he did was. I enjoyed the parts where you were relaxed a lot, but sometimes you appeared to be "snatching" (I think too worried about the speed of the runs).

  • got a nice feel in it

  • beautiful

  • Not really a fan of tatum cause I don't like jazz. But you could easily turn pro from this.

  • Congratulations, I really loved this! Glad to meet your wonderful piano & Art Tatum.

  • Wtf! I like Waller better but this performance was awesome. Incredible speed there in some parts.

  • Heard this again after a long time. Still interesting and soooo energetic. ;-)

  • Great performance, makes me think of my late father who used to play this also very well.

I am afraid I can only play in C myself and for the rest I'll keep on dreaming.... Thanks for posting this!

  • Everyone should check out Danny Thompson at the Baby Grand in Charing Cross in Glesgae (slang for Glasgow) that's if you're ever in the town. Thursdays Fridays and Saturdays.

  • is this kylan playing , the one who plays 'tea for two so well on his gran's piqano at newport ???

  • im starting to learn this, any tips?

  • awesome! well played dude

is it me or does the piano needs to get tuned or perhaps just poor audio recording? either way, nicely done

  • Poor audio? This was excellent!

  • You nailed it, Kylan - feels good, doesn't it? ;)

  • Great!

Could you maybe send me a sheet of that transcription?

    Thanks

    S:)

  • I have found (in my opinion) the best arrangement and performance (of this century) of my favorite Waller tune (out of the three that i've heard) since Alicia Keys' version (and its way better than her version too). Amazing job, Tom and Art would be proud!

  • A wonderful, jaw-dropping performance. Thanks for uploading!

  • Thank you for listening! I'm particularly proud of this performance, but it's nothing like the man Tatum himself...

  • Comparisons are against the true nature of art in my opinion, but if you can't avoid them then just think there was a time when Art still couldn't play as well as you play now. Better? :) I insist your performance is amazing, well done!

  • foundring states he is attached to his grandmom's piano. It makes you think you're listening to an old Art Tatum recording. He's pretty good. Gifted if you please!

  • you are a white art tatum!! you rule man! i wish i could play as good as you

  • There's nothing wrong with your piano sound here. It sounds great in my headphones. I turn my mike way down when I record, too. Do you play religious, romantic, or pop?

  • I don't understand: how do you have a large repertoire of unmemorized jazz (there's no scores for playing this the way you're playing it)?

  • Actually, I'm cheating!

There are in fact scores for some of these tunes--they can be found in the Hal Leonard published "Artist Transcriptions" series, which is dedicated to recreating note-for-note transcriptions of recordings of the greats of yore.

That being said, a transcription is not the piece itself and can only be accurate to a certain point, and when in doubt, I always default to the original recording, although I frequently add my own "flair" to the music. Artistic license!

  • Thanks for your criticism and compliments, they are much appreciated!

Though with a name with vimana in it, I would think you'd be of the inclination that just perhaps we all get many lives to develop our piano skills...

...I always got a sense that I knew how to play piano from "before"...

  • Not bad best I've heard yet but a bit whippy on the left hand. Tatum is very subtle. Check out Jez playing Tatums rendition of Dvoraks elegy in C.

  • Yeah, my left hand is a bit sloppy in places.

And Tatum's Dvorak renditions are all phenomenal, as are all of his other "interpretations" of classical tunes, although there are only a few.

  • Makes me want to smoke.

  • Thank you so much for such a fantastic piece of work!! I only hope I can learn some of this. Sincerely, Rudy

  • Great technique!

  • freaking awsome! :O

  • wow..this is fantastic.

I just wanted to know if you can read music at all? cause i play piano by ear but can't read piano music.

anyways..its a very classy rendition of this beautiful piece.

  • The audio quality sounds good when you press "Watch in High Quality".

    About you're playing though: fantastic.

I have a question, something I've been thinking about: what are your thoughts own piano lessons versus teaching oneself. I'm wondering if you still take lessons (or if you ever even did). I've been learning piano by teaching myself for the past 9 years or so. I get a little better every time I play, but do you think I will eventually reach a brick wall, and I will need piano lessons?

  • If I believed in it, I'd think Tatum and Waller were reincarnated in you! GREAT right hand stuff as always. You are incredible and this comes from a Tatum expert :-) I look forward to everything you put on youtube, more than anyone else! Love ya!!

  • Simply fantastic, you should be famous, love it love it.

Since I saw you playing handful of keys, I managed to get the music and am now half way through it, one day ill get it on here but its probably a year away, but thats because of job and a 2 yr old kid ha ha!!

    Really great man,

    Jon

  • love every note! fantastic pianist

  • Is this improv? If it isn't, I haven't heard this version before. What cd is this from? Do you know how many of these so called "early recordings" Art Tatum has?

  • you are freaking awesome. can i just ask, can you improvise? and you say you're classically trained, have you done a diploma? you're obviously higher than grade 8 :P

  • Just fantastic. Congrats on following so successfully in the footsteps of perhaps the most impossibly hyper-skilled musician in jazz history. Wow.

  • KMCMPTTYTHJNCPSAB

  • That's it. It's official. I can't watch your videos anymore. I'm too insanely jealous of your talent.

    BRAVO!!

  • *blushes*

  • is this note for note or your own take?

  • This is *mostly* note for note. You can find the sheet music in the "Jazz Masters" series of transcriptions simply called "Art Tatum" or "Art Tatum (MFM 85)", transcribed by Jed Distler. It's cheap and easy to find online, and has a few great other tunes in it.

That being said, I've been "playing" this piece for a while, and in certain areas I've developed and embellished my own runs/additions, but tried to do so while maintaining his style, and more importantly, the beat.

  • And damn, what a crazy last few lines

  • Isn't it? I swear, some of the stuff he pulled off harmonically...I just don't know how he even conceived of it all, especially back then.

  • jeesh, you're tellin me. Great work playing it with such a great energy!

  • Ohhhh man that's some good playin. Thanks for another great tune, man

  • Love it!!!!! You really capture the spirit of this kind of music.

And that older upright piano has a certain tone quality that gives it an 'authentic" feel.

  • Absolutely amazing.
