I don't understand the sympathy for a fallen rider.
This is jousting. I know we live in a different time period but, the fact is, you're still charging at eachother with massive sticks while on horseback. To not expect injury is simply foolish. You should, honestly, expect injury with every single match. This is silly, no disrespect to the woman in the video that was brave enough to take on this challenge though.
Wow that's scary. There's a difference between being knocked off from the initial force of a hit, and falling off 3 seconds after being hit like you're dead. Scary.
@JBMontgomery87 I know you posted this like 5 months ago haha but I thought I could maybe answer your question. IJA uses lances tipped with balsa wood which is much more prone to break than the wood that full contact jousters use. The end result is that IJA jousting is much safer and usually just the tip of the lance will break. In full contact the lance often bends which lends a much higher possibility to an unhorsing. If it does break the entire lance shatters.
@JBMontgomery87 As far as her falling off it honestly looked to me like she would have stayed on had the horse stopped at the end of the list. It looked like the only reason why she came off was that the horse started sidestepping (probably because her weight was distributed differently as a result of the hit). You couldn't really see the actual hit though.
Just to let you all know.. I shot this and it's actually a woman who fell. A rather amazing talented woman from Australia. Also appreciate the fact that this video is not being used for a slagging match any more.. I have deleted all the delirium from here..
few people know this but organized jousting is actually one of the most deadliest sports out there its stats are actually higher than football and rugby in injury and death
She's got guts! I would love to joust however I don't think either of my horses have the right mindset for it. I think it is a phenomenal sport and I would love to see it grow in popularity and become more mainstream!
@rangergirl56m There is going to be a reality TV show about it on the History Channel U.S. premiering sometime in early spring. It's full contact jousting though. As far as your horses go mindset is only part of it...you need a BIG horse to hold all that armor haha! And trust me I know a horse that is very hot that is used for jousting and it just scares me!!
aoch! that was a bad fall! aren't there any armours that get you a bit more freedom so you can roll the fall? I preffer to play safe and joust dummie's heads but if I ever were to try it agains someone else I'd seriously consider modern technology... or maybe i'm just a cheater spoiling the spirit of knighthood... shame on me! O_o
@xGhost4000x Not in the U.S. (at least from what I've experienced). It would certainly help though. The thing with jousting is that it's so decentralized at this point that each troupe has its own way of doing things so one troupe may have that rule. Most will at least require you to act as a squire for a while though.
Is it really a sport? I always wanted to do that but in the Province of Quebec it is very... rare. :( Maybe later ! I'm only 15 -_- ... Love that but god! These guys are strong because getting up after that hit doesn't seems really easy eh? Poor guy. :\ At least he's still alive :)
@mschmiddy16, Why do people strap a snowboard on there legs and slide down a mountain? Or Drive a car 120 mph around a race track? Or beat the crap out of each other in a Boxing Ring.
Snowboarders have jackets to keep warm, and people to keep an eye on them, Race drivers have seatbelts and a host of anti crash mechanics in the vehicle, Boxers have padded gloves. These guys have armor. It's the same as any sport, just different. :)
@drujohnwigsinkiwi wow New Zealand?! Wish the US had cool events like this. I'm in open country and wouldn't mind trying my hand at this. Do you know if that'd be possible here in the States? It'd take training I guess I can't even ride lol, but its definitely something I'd love to experience at least once in my life. Can you imagine the adrenaline rush, speeding towards another worthy opponent on a horse with a lance, expecting the blow!
Ouch, that hurt. I'm no jouster, but I ride horses for a living and I know how tough this is. This guy just needed to learn to sit deep and really wrap his legs around the horse's barrel, and this wouldn't have happened. I would love to see him competing now just to see the improvements. :)
Why didn't they put him on a stretcher? they always do this at football games too. After someone is hurt, they STAND THEM STRAIGHT UP and the crowds CLAP!! STUPID
i can just imagine being foot soldier in the ye old days. Standing in the battle field against those medieval tanks and likely getting hit by one resulting in never getting up ever again.
I watched a joust tourney at a renaissance fair yesterday and the guy fell/got knocked off the first time. If those armor suits really weight a couple hundred pounds, it's amazing they can even ride. Theres no way you could even stand up once your on the ground. Those horses are HUGE too.
They don't wear a couple of hundred pounds, historically speaking, and full armoured knight can run, jump and vault into the saddle, this does not hold quite as true for chain mail, but floating plates are a lot easier to move in than people think.
Male or Female what is most important is that the rider in question at least for the most part seemed to fair well enough to leave the field on their own power. And thank you "dru" not only for this submission but for the comment posted.
I am the owner of this video and am glad MOST of you like this. If you want to use racist and lobotomized comments go somewhere else. I posted this for enjoyment, not a place to slag off each other. Also if you are going to use adjectives and you have no brain, please think for just a second, (some of you may need longer) or refer to a dictionary or thesaurus. Also the rider is a woman and highly skilled in this sport.
Again this is not a place to use brainless expletives.
@drujohnwigsinkiwi man when I found out this is still done today...wohoo, let me tell ya, I won't rest till I experience the joy of jousting. Although, I must say the US is not the most enthusiastic place for real jousts. Can't see why though, you'd think it'd be a huge hit! idk I personally find it awesome, I find this waaay better than baseball, I mean come on
i belive the only way to settle this one would be a jousting tournement between the two of you. that is if pixelmonkey can ride horse as well as he talks horse shit GO ROD
You know who we are don't you???? Otherwise how would you know that Michelle is Australian???? You're a coward with a bone to pick hiding behind your computer.
In case you didn't pick it you stupid git, that voice on the mic in the background is the horsemaster for English Heritage. If you know anything about cavalry reenactment you will know who that is. How about asking him if he thinks the Aussies are clueless at jousting. We are the best in the world at it.
You wanker. How about using your real name. Take a look at how far that little girl moves that 120kg man out of the saddle. That's Michelle Walker in that clip. The Australasian Champion. She beat 7 men for that title. We use solid balsa in the IJA, not the powder puff tips that you English use. Typical internet wanker, say what you like hiding behind a screen. signed Rod Walker World Jousting Champion
