Wow! Great post... ya gotta love this song. I've played it every year for over 30 years when I drive down our cottage road. What a great guitar song. Best song on their second album. Where are these songs today Mark? Back to basics please. The Stratocaster, compression and a Fender Twin. Bring back the 70's.
On this first album and the second, Mk was never afraid to play the low down notes, rather than high fret board wailing sounds. It enhances the melody, plenty of mid fret board "D chords"
Waiting my turn...today a man from Brussels said to me: I have a house here
in Ostend but I'm going off to Greece. People all think life is eternal, but it isn't.
So I am off! And I tought to myself: another one who realizes that the SCHEADULE of TIME in which we seem to live un-consciously ...it is slipping away from our hands , it has never the more been in, all the time...UNNOTICED.
The "dry-dock town" is Greenwich in London and the river is the Thames. The "Little gypsy moth" is Sir Francis Chichester's Gipsy Moth IV in which he circumnavigated the globe single handedly. The boat is quite small and is overshadowed by the impressive "Cutty Sark" tea clipper which is also in dry dock nearby.
At the time Knopfler wrote this song, the Gipsy Moth IV was in a dry dock at Greenwich "shes all tied down", "a sailing ship just held down in chains"
listen to the studio version and listen to this, all most a perfect match, are they good or am i crazy, this bloke is a guitar genius, let alone his song writing
I love the look on his face at 4:30 , that distant look. It's like his thinking: "god!, this is so easy, i could do this all day..." best guitarist ever!
I grandi gruppi come i Dire Straits, Pink Floyd.
@Jaukebass Both guitars are Strats... Mark's using a Dimarzio FS-1 (13K ohm singlecoil!) as a neck pickup I believe. I think Gilmour had a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal in his rack for his Wall sound.
I believe this song in particular is the best "live" performance I have ever seen. It is actually better than the studio version...especially the ending.
Was a different kinda great music back then , ....being a teenager in the late 70's , I saved my pocket money hard to buy the early Dire Straits albums .
great tune and cool riff! Communique was a great album and perhaps the best album if you want to study his guitar style without a lot of other sounds in the mix.

DS at their best. Gutsy atmospheric lyrics and music. Pick Withers is fantastic on the drums, too.

Soon in the dictionary :
[pleɪ laɪk e nɑ:'flr]
“play like a Knopfler” (expression) : means “play like a god”, thing commonly accepted as impossible for ordinary mortals.
