There is almost a 'cult' around the first three albums but in my giant swelling opinion it was this the middle period, when they were at their very best, playing innumerable gigs as well as making these superb hard rock albums with both the music and lyrics being well crafted and do not insult the listener's intelligence. No other hard rock band did this, including Zeppelin, who produced far less material and were sometimes quite throwaway in the lyric department.
@Jlipnicki - Basically all legendary bands has a "cult" that holds a certain era very high. Which is OK, I guess. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.. BUT the shame is that much of the material that isn't supported by "the cults" is being forgotten. Material that often is worth a listen or two! I like all of Blue Öyster Cult's work. Some more, some less.. And I think all albums is at least worth two listens !
This was a great album; I don't understand how this is considered a debacle to some people. I was in the front row next to the stage at a BOC concert in 2006 and Buck is one of the best guitarists out there. It was great to just watch him and not even pay attention to anything else. He played the CheeseBerger almost the whole concert.
@BasswipeNC You have to realize something....I was just a kid and Secret Treaties and Spectres were awesome. Mirrors was a much an adult sounding album and I hated it...ummm, because I was a kid? Later Fire of Unknown Origin came out and WOW! They didn't sound like a tired '70's garage band that only had one hit that someone recognized. Most BOC albums had a good single or two....every song on FIre was great!
How could Columbia records not get behind this album...there must be 7 top 40 songs...if Hysteria sold 14 million,,Mirrors could have done 20 million....Is this the best song of 79? Great tour..New years eve 79 Cow Palace, San Francisoc...opening band Gamma!
Donald (Buck (creative (god (half man half alien) like) power house) Dharma) Roeser doing it again. No-one comes remotely close to this guy. Some play, some write, some sing, BD does the lot and better than them all.
"We're sick & tired and dying to meet you." Ahead of their time as usual. Let's hope that the spaceships get here before the police start tear-gassing all of these peaceful protesters.
@SP4LFe good luck playing if there were...if you watch the recent live version of last days of may you get a lot of close ups on buck playing...i don't know of many professionals who could keep up...
"The Vigil" is that hardest rocking track of this album. In hindsight the band probably would have been wise to have "The Vigil" as the 1st track of the album and move Dr. Music to the 6 track or song 1 on side 2 of the cassette. It is so hardhitting that it will draw the listener in to connect with the rest of the album. Dr. Music would fit in really well right before I Am The Storm. I am a huge fan and I think this change would have allowed better accessibility to all.
It should have sold 10 million copies, but Cloumbia was the wrong label for the mighty BOC....if they were on Atlantic...they would be selling out stadiums today! People who hear "the Vigil" for the first time cant believe it never hit radio back in 79.
Should have been the first single pushed......Great Band, Great Song, Great album.
O man I hate the haters who think this is some rip-off Pop album lol. This album has some of the greatest guitar rifts and some awesome backup singin as well.
Actually, now that I have listened more to a few of the songs on this album, I realized I am wrong... "Mirrors" and "Lonely Teardrops" are quite good.
This song is actually pretty good, but as much as I love BOC, I have to say that Mirrors is probably one of my least favorite albums by them... Not to say that it is bad by any means.
@gameguy2500 I'd go up to Club Ninja for the "least favorite", this has too many good individual songs...not arguing your point, just opening up the Club Ninja can of worms.:)
ddid you now? I wrote all of AC/DC's songs too, lets meet up and trade stories. Then I can tell you about that time I met Rorschach and... wait a second. Oh yeah. THAT'S BULLSHIT.
I LOVE the guitar at 4:18. It's amazing. I'd learn to play guitar just to do this one, LAst Days of May, and Cities on Flame. Ohh yeah, and Perfect Water too. Hell, I'd learn ALL of their songs.... if i could only play guitar.
Probably the most underrated albums of the 70's

these guys almost personify dynamics, which today's music sorely lacks
