  • Watched this in a modular theatre, a couple of days ago. Had to rewatch.

God, this is trippy, but one of the most amazing things ever.

  • Thumbs up if you think he was high when he created this! lol

  • @SirSinister Yes he did. Watch the video Pen Point Percussion.

  • não gostei ,foi muito vago. socorro morais

  • well done him ! love it

  • Amazing what people did back in those days.

  • He pointed a new way, but who followed?

  • muitooooo gostosooooooo

  • I remember Channel 4 in the UK showed a load of McLarens stuff late night years ago, had a VHS tape full - nice to see this again - so ahead of his time

  • hero :)

  • Great mid-age era exsample of electronic sound...20 years before this in italy born the first project of electronic xperiment by the hands of Futurismo artists. This video is a son of Futurismo. Check out the music of Russolo,Berio,Carra...

  • @obrazov : dont forget that futursimo is inside of a time with a lot of diferent directions. It is worng to say that it is only son of futurismo, maybe you want to say one of his parents may be futurismo, as like other movements of that times (suprematism, abstracionism, surrealism, dadaism), or parents of also futurismo. But definitvely, futurism one of the most influyents in that times.

It would be wrong to say that it is only son of futurismo, maybe you want to say one of his parents may be futurismo, as like other movements of that times (suprematism, abstracionism, surrealism, dadaism), or parents of also futurismo. • my god

    1940

    sounds like electronic music

  • @foketesz : actually isnt for the means it is made. But yes to aesthetics - when do you think appeard abstract music? 1990s? have you heard music of the time here first electric means where used? Even before that years

  • @leongeyer well, actually yes, but it always sounds presumptuous and cerebral. This sounds like the result of an inspirational process, and that's what's touching about it...

  • Sinestesia pura!!

  • its like animated beatboxing

  • You can see another example with same paper's sound technique by Russian artist, Nikolay Voinov. Search on youtube with worlds: "Николай Воинов" or "Рисованный звук".

  • gotta love his stuff

  • Proto IDM? ;)

  • How many animators today, aside from Bill Plympton, do their own animation by hand by themselves with no CGIs? This is incredible!

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 don hertzfeldt. joanna quinn,

  • drum n bass, 1940s style :)

  • The guy invented electronic music in the 40's

  • this beats most of videoart-animation i've seen recently. Really impressive.

Can someone recommend more videoartists like Mclaren?¿

  • @coffius aye - len lye I think

  • TB303 ? no.

  • totally awesome

  • este lo vi en Locomotion!!!. Los ultimos Locotomias que hubo

  • Electronic music born in 1919 by Futurist artists like Russolo and the amazing INTONA RUMORI instrument invention....

  • genio de la animación. no hubo cámaras involucradas y, la música de los cortometrajes fue hecha manipulando la sección de audio de la cinta.

  • cant believe this was going on so long ago!

  • Norman created the film by scratching in both the animation AND the soundtrack into each frame of the film by hand. Amazing!

  • @jasarm

He didn't actually scratch the soundtrack into the film by hand.

  • @jasarm he actually painted on the film, not scratched. on his film called blinkity blank, he scratches on 16mm film.

  • @jasarm how do you "draw" in a sound note/frequency into film?!!!!

  • its amazing how he actually drew on the film and made these dots and stuff appear. He even drew his own audio track by drawing an audio line onto the film. theres another guy named pierre drouin who used needles to poke film and make a sort of grid picture. i dont think any of his stuff is on youtube, though.

  • @torker24 Oh man. I wish it was on YouTube. I love his stuff -winkyface-

  • @torker24

Hi, can't find nothing about pierre drouin, could you give me some links ?

  • @GeoCloset You know, I've been looking, and I can't find anything either. Maybe I have the name wrong; I know I read a little thing about him in this DK book. If I get anything, I'll let you know.

  • how did he do it

  • the godfather of techno!!!

  • McLaren would have hand drawn the sound for this hey?

  • incredible

  • norman is awesome!

  • so cool

  • THAT WAS WONDERFUL!

  • greatness

  • thanks!

  • Animated sound

  • incredible!!!!!!!!!

  • Early, early electronic music!!

  • Man. I can't even describe how amazing that was...

  • impressive, when you know that every sound was made by scratching the audio-track, master of mechanical/technical expirimentation whith the celluloid medium

  • Muy Bueno, Very Good. This guy is a genious, Este tipo es un genio

  • Something tells me Elizabeth Murray probably LOVED this little video.

  • this is just wow,

  • SPLASH EN IMAGEN¡

  • BELLA MERDA!!

  • spettacolare

  • trippy

  • Wow. Just seeing this mans work here for the first time.

So far ahead of his time. Amazing.

  • Hanno già fatto tutto in epoche passate...siamo solo miscele ormai e questo video è l'ennesima fottuta prova

  • It sounds like beatboxing to me.

  • exactly :)

  • geniale! davvero geniale!

    nel 1940!!!!!!

    non ho parole

    grazie per il video!

  • Can't beleive this thing was made in 1940. That's fuckin unbelievable.

  • I can't believe those sounds weren't created by a Moog! McLaren was some kinda genius alright.

  • Fantastico!

  • The fact that the soundtrack is manipulated film is amazing.

  • Norman McLaren, C. C., C. Q. (b. April 11, 1914 - d. January 27, 1987)

  • i rather think that mr mcclaren was dead before atari showed on on the scen he was in his 70s after all

  • he only joined 7 monthes ago

  • I wonder what McLaren thought of Atari's 2600 game 'missile command' the first time he saw it. What an amazing piece that pre-dates video games by 30 years

  • You know, that's what I thought when I first saw this, too. Not only does this piece LOOK like an early video game, it SOUNDS like one, too!

    -MINESWEEP

  • Gazie a youtube si possono finalmente guardare gioielli come questo, che fino a pochi anni fa avresti dovuto cercare, spesso inutilmente, in polverose cineteche.

    Grazie di averlo caricato thecipo

  • Une merveille !
