Gee wiz, you just crank it in without ever even taking the rod out of the holder? That's about as exciting as winching your boat on the trailer! You might as well go ahead and use an electric reel so all you have to do is push a button!
it is fun to fight a fish for sport, but its a different story when you are fishing for big pelagics by yourself. i think you should give captain clay more credit. after all, could you clear 4 lines, drive the boat, reel the fish, gaff it and land it while holding the pole? believe me, landing a fish like this by yourself, no matter the scenario, is more exciting than "winching your boat on the trailer."
If he was all by himself then explain who was holding the camera , or did he stand on the fly bridge with the camera while gaffing it too?? It was a nice fish, but I'm not buying that he had no help on board. He could have held the pole!
i was holding the camera. this clip is from a 40-minute video we shot about how captain clay catches mahimahi by himself. i did not help him land any of the fish and really could not as i was entirely focused on operating 2 cameras to cover the action. anyway, there are many fisherman here (myself included) that fish for pelagics by themselves. i know some who have even landed marlins solo. but like all things, everyone's definition of "exciting" is different, so i respect your opinion.
the DVD that this clip is from is filled with great action like this. captain clay is really an amazing fisherman with tons of information to share. i highly recommend buying the DVD.

I love your videos.
When I come to the Islands I usually fish off the big island. Had more time enjoying the live ocean than catching fish, one Blue in three trips.
What a great film though of the Mahi Mahi, I saw one in the Keys slice a mate's eye open so I know to back off. never saw aman wrestle one before!!
