Not necessarily, there are a few cases where a patient needs an immune suppressant, such as the 15 diabetic people who had the stem-cell treatment a few years back. But that was because their ability to create the hormone needed are naturally destroyed by the immune system. Much more treatments can be done without the risk of rejection and side effects. More research is needed concerning both stem cell behavior and the mechanisms of the diseases and these "guinea pigs" will help them progress.
You do know that few of treatments need such harsh immune suppressant correct? These doctors ask for permission and clearly state the risks for such procedure to the patient. I give all my respect to them.

@gekiryudojo Hm, Don't know about you, but from my experience, there had been numerous of cases in which stem-cell research had help a patient with health problems, including a a case that cut the AIDS Virus in a German Patient, a Trachea replacement, numerous therapies that helped both animals and people with a neurological problem, and many other cases that had gone successfully. It's still in it's early stages, but it is very promising. Seeing it as "evil" is truly pathetic in my eyes.

In-vitro fertilization clinics are where infertile couples go, they take 6 or 7 eggs from the woman and fertilize them with her husbands sperm then they implant the zygote back into the female. If 4 out of 6 take and the woman wants 1 kid the rest are going to be incinerated. So you're saying incinerate them instead of possibly finding the cure 4 cancer?

It depends on whether the nerve cells in his brain actually died or whether it happened in a particular part of the brain stem. If the brain itself is damaged, it's very unlikely that any person could come back without at the very least, amnesia...but there is hope depending on where the brain or spinal cord is damaged... Stem cell research hasn't advanced that far as of yet though...

It is not a functioning member of any society, nor is it even developed enough to count as a funtioning human being. Well, according to what I've studied thus far (remember I'm not a bio major but have taken a course or two in the area) other organisms percieve pain in roughly the same fashin that we do, through a series of networking nerve cells that lead to a main convergance of master control cells (in us a brain). Now seeing that at the early stages of developement an embryo shows no signs of actually posessing such a formed organ, its safe to assume that it does not yet notice such things as pain...
Why leave the realm of the discussion? We're talking about humans, fetuses, and embryo's. Of what concern is it to go outside this spectrum of decorum?
Now this arguement is dependant upon the stage of development that the "human" is in. If you're speaking of anything after 14 weeks, then there's an arguement to be had, but between 5 and 14 weeks, I'd have to say that the developmental stages have not yet allowed for a "brain" to yet form, such that the fetus can yet feel pain. But that aside, when in the lab the stem cells themselves feel no pain. To argue on that front would proove fruitless. And I fail to see how I portray any superiority?!

Not necessarily, there are a few cases where a patient needs an immune suppressant, such as the 15 diabetic people who had the stem-cell treatment a few years back. But that was because their ability to create the hormone needed are naturally destroyed by the immune system. Much more treatments can be done without the risk of rejection and side effects. More research is needed concerning both stem cell behavior and the mechanisms of the diseases and these "guinea pigs" will help them progress.

@gekiryudojo Hm, Don't know about you, but from my experience, there had been numerous of cases in which stem-cell research had help a patient with health problems, including a a case that cut the AIDS Virus in a German Patient, a Trachea replacement, numerous therapies that helped both animals and people with a neurological problem, and many other cases that had gone successfully. It's still in it's early stages, but it is very promising. Seeing it as "evil" is truly pathetic in my eyes.

In-vitro fertilization clinics are where infertile couples go, they take 6 or 7 eggs from the woman and fertilize them with her husbands sperm then they implant the zygote back into the female. If 4 out of 6 take and the woman wants 1 kid the rest are going to be incinerated. So you're saying incinerate them instead of possibly finding the cure 4 cancer?

However if these raw stem cells are coaxed into becoming a specific cell time such as a glial cell (A cell that remyelinates damaged neurons from a spinal cord injury or disease) then the results are simply astounding. Glial cell's have been proven to restore massive amounts of function when implanted into an animal model with spinal cord injury. We'll see if it works in humans next month I suppose.

Nice list of diseases. Only problem, there's only 400k "spare" embryos. Use up a bunch for research, clinical trials, etc.
Disease 1: Diabetes: 24 MILLION Americans and climbing.
Disease 2: Parkinson's: Millions more
Disease 3:Paralysis: A million or so, maybe more?
Disease 4: Need I go on ?

embryonic stem cells regenerate themselves. each embryo contains at least 30 stem cells, 400k embroys means 1200k stem cells, stick those in culture dishes and in a few months you get over 10000k stem cells. there is an unlimited supply of stem cells, its just how you use it and how it works that matters.

Incorrect. As a stem cell replicates, it differentiates. In 8 weeks they're fetal cells. In 38 weeks, they're newborn cells.
If they regenerate into more stem cells, then you'd only need one embryo forever.

stem cells are retrieved from the inside of a blastocyte. since the inside is scooped out, the outer part is discarded. therefore, it cannot grow and develope without the outer shell, so it doesnt grow into a child

Incorrect again. The inner mass cells become all cells in the more mature body. They do become all of the cells of the human body, via forced survival into later stages of development. The only difference: they've been artificially separated from each other. Mature heart, nerve, skin, pancreatic, etc. cells arise from this group of inner cell mass cells as do those in the intact embryo.

Totally different cells. Bone marrow stem cells become different types of blood cells(macrophages, neutrophils, etc.), hence their use in treating leukemia.

Every time science has a breakthrough, they need more time. 10 years, 50 years, by 2500 AD something could possibly happen.... I'm tired of it. Either admit it's a lie and that they just want money for nothing, or lets us know when there's real progress and the consequences are minute.
I'm not against this research but I am against getting peoples hopes up. Again, do something or cram it already.

It depends on whether the nerve cells in his brain actually died or whether it happened in a particular part of the brain stem. If the brain itself is damaged, it's very unlikely that any person could come back without at the very least, amnesia...but there is hope depending on where the brain or spinal cord is damaged... Stem cell research hasn't advanced that far as of yet though...

Uhmm...the media always likes to exaggerate any story they can find so that people will get fooled into watching. That's why I don't trust the media in getting me the medical news I want. If you want real news about stem cell research advancements, read some science journals or go to science websites (make sure they're legit).

charles - First, a little education for you. Stem Cell Research has been going on for decades. The first hESC was isolated eleven years ago. As for funding, The United States Government is not the only place in the world with research money. In fact, The State of California has set aside a ton of money for ESCR. Not to mention the rest of the world. You say,,,"...and it works it can cure any thing..." OK, kid, if it can cure anything, l only want you to list one thing it has cured.

As for ESCR, , We've been trying to make it work for decades. Huge hope came in 1997/1998, but, again, there were and are failures in this area...But, RDV, it simply doesn't work the way many researchers want it to. Don't think you and I ever discussed this ,,,

Alright, comps up, time for some fun. Now, you say that ESCR is not practical due to its longterm studies and failures. But really, if that were the case for many areas of science (not just the bilogical spectrum), we'd have given up long ago on persuits that, for the longest time seemed for naught, but finally succcess was obtained. Now, I'm not saying fund the hell out of ESCR, but don't throw it to the curb either, just give it more attention than what was previously allowed. Fair, no?

Yeah, really. Only favor bush did us (in that area you conservatives...don't get your panties in a bunch) was to even allow it to continue in the first place. Beyond that, he was a hell of a road block to the scientific community. Hell, in just shy of a decade, imagine how much decent research could have been accomplished with federal funding. Yes, but what ookami16 is saying is that (though true genetically spaeking) an embryo is not a human as determined from a sociological standpoint. It is not a functioning member of any society, nor is it even developed enough to count as a funtioning human being. Genetics aside, its nothing more than a mass of cells with no concept of pain or self awareness. In effect, at that stage of developement, it is equall to any other mass of cells that size, only it holds possible medical benefits. Logic

Apparently it does have a function: stem cell harvesting.
Also, think about what you said. What is pain? How do you define it? And on what grounds do you know that pain exists only in the form of how humans perceive it. That's quiet a bit of mammalian chauvinism. How DO you know how other life forms perceive pain? Pain is, in its essence, nothing more than a means of alerting a thing to a stimulus. So how is a cell responding to a stimulus any different?

Well, according to what I've studied thus far (remember I'm not a bio major but have taken a course or two in the area) other organisms percieve pain in roughly the same fashin that we do, through a series of networking nerve cells that lead to a main convergance of master control cells (in us a brain). Now seeing that at the early stages of developement an embryo shows no signs of actually posessing such a formed organ, its safe to assume that it does not yet notice such things as pain...

Now this arguement is dependant upon the stage of development that the "human" is in. If you're speaking of anything after 14 weeks, then there's an arguement to be had, but between 5 and 14 weeks, I'd have to say that the developmental stages have not yet allowed for a "brain" to yet form, such that the fetus can yet feel pain. But that aside, when in the lab the stem cells themselves feel no pain. To argue on that front would proove fruitless. And I fail to see how I portray any superiority?!
