not really sure how this is dialectics. they're not exploring any real truths, Vizzini is just bullshitting to survive. there isn't any real meaning in his "arguments." it's not actually a rhetorical debate; Wesley allowed Vizzini to think this. it's more of a riddle where you're supposed to think beyond the "premises." but this has nothing to do with dialectics.
Remember, the pellet with the poson is in the chalice from the palace. The vessel with the pestle is the brew that is true! ...Alas, they broke the chalice from the palace. The pellet with the poison is now in a flagon. ...with a picture of a dragon! (From "The Court Jester")
This whole scene was a bar bet. If a person comes up to you and bets you that they can't do something, obviously they're in control of the parameters and are looking to make an easy buck. It was his poison, his rules.
He should have looked at his own clues. He can clearly not choose the cup in front of him, and he could clearly not choose the cup in front of his opponent. HE GAVE HIMSELF SUCH A BIG FAT CLUE! XD
The best deduction that Vizzini could have made was that the Man in Black wouldn't give him a chance to win. He should have poured out his glass and refilled it from the bottle. However, if he had poisoned the bottle...

The guy ruled out both goblets three times over. Had it been me in his place, I would've known that iocaine can have an immunity built up to it and thus I would've deduced that he poisoned both goblets!
I love this scene. Wallace Shawn is so goddamn talented. Cary Elwes is also that thing I said. Even more awesome in Robin Hood: Men In Tights. The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies now (just watched it last weekend for the third time).
For all that sit and discuss what a smart man would do to get done faster... Just take lessons from a certain Henry Jones Jr. (sshhhh. we named the dog Indiana!) in what probably is one of the most well-known 1v1 fights in the history of cinema.
What amuses me most is that the glasses are not the same shape, and anyone paying attention could see the switching, yet he finds it extraordinarly clever. Even then, it might have been the other cup that was poisined... This Vizzini ought to take a class. The thinking man would just not drink it.
@JIMBOND27 I have seen the movie, but for the first time, I have actually noticed they are the same shape, and that renders the first part of my comment useless. The rest is still relatively valid.
I like the movie though, and Vizzini in particular.
@Insomniac22100 an even smarter smarter man would pour a bit of his cup into his opponents and dump under the table he was looking away and drink an empty cup while his enemy is guaranteed to drink poison.

@Tommygun1135 a smarter man would simply put poison in both goblets and have an antidote on him

@mryevix an even smarter man would simply stab him while he was ranting.

@Dragonlord7012 an even smarter smarter smarter man would simply engage in an asian land war

@mryevix
That's actually pretty close to what happens in the movie. Both cups were poisoned, but the man in the mask was immune to the poison.

@Tommygun1135 Westly probably knew, but he didn't care because he was amune to iocaine anyway.
