I watch war movies from around the world and had been wanting to see a movie about the Soviet Afghan war. I thought this was a great movie and though reading subtitltes is not my favorite thing to do, the message is common in all war films. It tells the story of the Soldier and that is all that matters to me. Politics aside, my salute to the brave men of all nations.
@WunderDoob But yea I'm with u there about Red Dawn over Platoon...but that's just me personally I like the straighforward "us vs them" shoot-em-up war flicks over the melodramatic flicks.
@damiion666 ...the same mujahadeen freedom fighters the ISAF coalition forces are currently fighting in afghanistan today?
ummm, sorry buddy, but we've invaded afghanistan just the same way the soviets did in the 80's. plus you have to remember, its not political ideologies that fight wars, its the men.
this movie isnt about politics, its about the destruction & inhumanity of warfare.
@controlusplease1 "...the same mujahadeen freedom fighters the ISAF coal forces are fighting in afghan today?" Yes of course. Alliances change, enemies change.
We made no illusions as to why we went in. You harbor our enemies that blew away our civilians u pay the price. Much more honest answer than "we're here to help the Peoples Republic of Afghanistan in their struggle...workers of the world...unite!!"
I know what this movie is about but it's not all that realistic. Just a Platoon ripoff.
@damiion666 it doesnt have to be realistic, it was a show of the hard times soviet soldiers had in afghanistan. and if youre bringing up the point of realism, to be honest, platoon wasnt that realistic of a movie either, although it was a great movie.
thats the purpose of movies, its not the realism that matters, its the symbolism.
well, fine, on that level of thinking, we should have invaded Egytpt & Arabia as well after 9/11, afterall most of the terrorists involved were Egyptians & saudis
@controlusplease1 Just because a terrorist was born in a certain country doesn't mean that country deliberately produced that individual to do what they did. Afghanistan provided a unique situation in that we knew the mastermind of 9/11 was being harbored by the current de facto givt at the time and would protect him to the end. Well they got what they asked for. imo a much better reason than the excuse of "we are there to provide assistance"
@controlusplease1 And I have no major problem with this movie. The combat seems very entertaining I actually enjoyed it. But it is very unrealistic in that they don't even show what the soviets did as far as annihilating innocent civilians and such. Very sanitized version. At least platoon showed both sides of what soldiers in the field are capable of.
@WunderDoob ROFL okaaay 10x better than Platoon. Everything Platoon did this movie copied. This is a fuckin' low budget B movie. Nvm this plot has been beat to death a million times over. Don't get me wrong I still liked the action scenes in this movie that's why I watch war flicks such as this one, but by far it's no Platoon. Not enough character development and u don't grow to like or hate any of the characters, well, except for the chinese dude he was kinda funny lol but it was more his looks

@hassannn75 Well obviously there are political factors that affect the nominations, for example the US call the Soviets in Afghanistan as 'aggression' but they call themselves in Afghanistan as 'bringing democracy' or 'fighting terrorists' that everyone knows were supplied by the US. This movie was selected but it was not nominated most likely for that sole reason.
@Unit987654321 what the us goverment has not yet understanded is that you cant force democary upon a people it can only be accived through revolution history tells us that

But on a historical sense, the ones who attacked the 9th independents in the battle portrayed here were not Mujahideens but Pakistani special forces.
I should say even in real life battle, the 9th Independents fought very well in that occasion.
And 5 guys survived, not just 1. Were they "forgotten"- they were received as heroes in USSR if I remember correctly.
Not entirely "historical fact reenacment" but nevertheless a good quality war movie, no matter who you supported...
