We actually use the same system for our walkthrough portion. In 2006 it was implemented for the people in line but we figured it was better used elsewhere. So from 07-09 we used the system in our graveyard and elevator scenes. Perhaps in the future when more funds are available we will add a third system and bring it back to the front.
Well not just software but lots of hardware as well. Not usually cheap (at least what we did wasn't), however because these light shows have become the latest trend I've seen wal-mart selling sets to do this for 40 bucks, however they only have 6 channels, where as ours cost a few hundred bucks and has 16 channels i believe and is DMX :p
Actually its 32 channels with a 6000 watt capacity. It also has a seperate DMX controller for the outdoor LED floods. The equipment running this house costed me around 2,000 not including the lights which are another 1200.
Yeah I took that into account when we bought the house. The house has a structure problem across the street so no one lives there. We also bought a radio transmitter so it's silent for the other neighbors. You get to listen to the music in the comfort of your car.
I was half-expecting a light show to the Haunted Mansion Holiday Gordon Goodwin score... that would be pretty awesome.

If you want to get real experience doing this go to goolgle and type in animated lighting. That is what runs this show.
