@BERNARDOANUK the tessitura is to high for him,yes he can sing it ,but that doesn't mean he should,it is obvious that it is uncomfortable for him to sing, this is a piece of music that is for a lighter voiced tenor to sing, not for a heavier voice like Corelli's-just because you can sing something doesn't mean you should
@cccorsetti I continue thinking the same to that before and you must listen his " messa di voce " in the minute 1:41 to 1:50. It's not possible to do it if you don't feel good with the tone and he does it with many facility.
@BERNARDOANUK listen to his tone from 1:58 on,the struggle with the cadenza and most importantly the look on his face,he is uncomfortable ,this last part of this music,is designed for a lyric tenor or at the least a lirico spinto who has agility ,especially in the upper register(listen to Mario Lanza singing the same and you will immediately recognize the difference, regardless of Corelli's age-he shouldn't have sung this even if he was 30 years old,it is just not for him-
@cccorsetti I understand perfectly your opinion and its true. Franco no have the agility necessary for the las part. Yes...i know. But remember that you say its TOO HIGH for him. And its not to high. The problem is the colour of his voice. Its too much heavy for this aria. And please...don't talk to me about MARIO LANZA...He never was a professional Opera Tenor. Is the same that if you talk me about Boccelli...We talk about really Opera tenors please.
@BERNARDOANUK Lanza and Bocelli are both certainly opera tenors, anyone who believes differently is not realistic or has an ax to grind with them, both have sung opera's and are capable of a career doing so,and with Corelli he does not have the agile voice for this specifically because the tessitura is to HIGH,your completely missing the point of the conversation
@cccorsetti It seems to me that we will never agree. And Bocelli and Lance are not professional Opera's tenors because they never have sung a complete Opera in a theatre. Never.
I think for you Michael Bolton is an Opera's tenor and Albano Carrisi too.
The problem for Corelli would be the same if he sings 1 or 2 tones down because his voice no has agility
@BERNARDOANUK no you are wrong again, both Lanza and Bocelli have sung complete opera's,Lanza sang M. Butterfly and Bocelli " Boheme" both on the stage, and Bolton could very well be an opera tenor for he is classically trained and most certainly has the voice now if he would get hired is another story I'm only disagreeable when I feel whoever I'm talking to is incorrect,
My question is: If in this concert in Tokyo he sang a beautiful Gelida, a strong Ch´ella mi creda, why he wive us a tired Donna? Sorry for my english.
If this is Corelli in 1981 then he is 60. I Am a die hard Corelli and I love just watching him sing although I must agree he did sound better in his thirties and forties. I still love listening to him. I have heard him sing where he sounds very tender and it tugs at my heart. No other tenors voice has been able to affect me that way!!!!
He doesn't seem old enough to have such a degraded voice; maybe have some sort of vocal trouble temporarilly? Or, maybe nodules on his throat. I don't know but here he is too young for his voice to have declined so much from where it was. Still one of my favorites in life and death.
I definitelly agree that this is far from Corellis best but even here, he's still as good, if not better, as the best tenors today... Sadly the beautiful art of classical singing is in decline.
He sounded best during tragic moments, because he could barely express more than angst, pain, and heartbreak in his singing. And just to set the record straight, he was one of the best if not the best at expressing these emotions. Again just to reiterate that its my opinion. It doesn't have to be everyone else's.
He doesn't look old. His voice is obviously in decline. And while admittedly Corelli's technique was impressive with some of the most intense high notes ever, IMO his singing often sounds one dimensional. No matter what he sang, it always sounded like he was crooning and crying. Just listened to his Romeo and Juliet with Freni and all through the first few acts,he sounds like a big cry baby. You listen to his recondita armonia in tosca and it sounds as tragic as his lucevan le stelle.

Wonderful!!!!, how great is to hear the great maestro performing this different repertoire. He really keeps surprising me even after been his fan for so long.May our Lord have him in His Glory!!!:Bravoo!!!. Thank you for posting
a wonderful voice, but i think this aria was not for him ... if i didint know this aria, i would not be able to understand what he sings on the cadenza ...
not his best performance... more one of the worst ones... maybe a bad day or just to cash in some money. But not done with much heart for the thing he was doing.
LOL! Who are you to judge about one of the greatest opera singers on earth ever...
He choose bad aria so what???
He is past his prime here, yes, but that "imroviso" same night, is better then any tenor today, young or mature...
You do not have an idea what is needed to sing like him,or MDM, or, Bjorling or Caruso, and still you put your ignorant comments... Sing better than that and upload please so I can hear and stop being bunch of morons....
I'll reiterate what has been said already; he is not in the best vocal condition here and this is not a dramatic aria of which Corelli excelled. He still sounds 100 times better than the ridiculous sounds the tenors of today make. I would pay any amount of money to see Corelli sing this role over anyone else today.
My two cents? This wasn't a good choice of aria for his huge voice at this particular time. Other arias from this same evening are absolutely spot on fantastic. In any case, I would still have been screaming "BRAVO" for my man, Franco.
If you like FRANCO CORELLI check THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première for YOU TUBE ) and tell me which one you prefer.
I'm thinking that maybe the acoustics in the hall weren't up to first grade and he had to make up for it, you just never know. Anyways, it's Corelli, that's good enough for me!
this is corelli obviously at his worst...his voice is gone. however, if you dont appreciate corelli in all his glory you really arent a 'die hard opera fan'.... your just an idiot
@junktank - At his worse? Not at all! Vocally he was in great shape but he was never known fir his agility in the quick runs, not even when he was young. In his time there were three schools: the power, the Verdian and the agile ones (Corelli and Del Monaco, Di Stefano and Bergonzi and Valetti respectively). Nowadays opera lovers demand "absolute/complete" singers that will go from Turandot to Rossini or Mozart like Kaufmann. You want to see other videos of this same concert to compare. Thanks
@vaddoc maybe these are ashes but they are enough to heat the heart of the listeners. most of the current tenors would give an eye to sing like this man.
Who cares what age he was ... he was a master. The decrescendo at 1:40-1:50 is marvelous and the high note at the end is thrilling as ever. Bravo Corelli!
the more lyric a voice, the longer you can sing duke. so bjoerling, lanza, kraus, caruso, pavarotti, and WHOEVER ELSE FANS: corelli was not this voice type. even a great duke like carlo bergonzi put it away by the late 60's, because you have to have a lot of agility to your voice to do it now. corelli considered this role when he was able to sing it, but he never performed it because again it was just TOO lyric. still, he can sing an aria if he wants. so you blind pavarotti fans, learn for once.
you can't compare corelli to other lyric tenors, because it makes no sense. every voice is different, and corelli is one of the last in an era of voices that were immediately distinguishable. if you don't like corelli, don't comment on this video. it's dumb to flat out go "i don't like corellI" cause why are you commenting then? so this isn't a good performance, so? there's TONS of shitty performances from every tenor you all talk about somewhere on youtube. so what? there's MORE good ones.
ok, being one of the biggest corelli fans and researchers out there, and knowing a lot about all kinds of voices, especially dramatic, let me clue you all in: 1, this is in 1972 i believe, and corelli was 51. 2, corelli WAS a dramatic tenor, and you have to have listened to many recordings live and not to judge that, and by 1970 he was in slght decline, so to transpose this is natural and this role, not for his voice AT THIS POINT, is hard especially for a dramatic tenor.
Bjorling's recording to answer your comment was super a great classic but recordings and live are not the same as we know and Danny Newman the late PR director of lyric opera and a friend of mine told me he heard the 58' Aida show, Jussi did 3 of them and Newman liked it but Jussi said he was not happy with it in a big house he never had a big dramatic sound so he dropped the idea of singing it at the met but died two years later anyhow. I agree he was a great artist though above most others
Bjorling in Aida in a big house was not really best as far as the dramatic moments, his voice was not large he did it in Chicago 1958 and Claudia Cassidy loved him normally but gave him a poor review and said in the review he is my favorite tenor but it is not wise to sing it in a house this size (3,700) he is not Del Monaco. He had done it well in Sweden, Hungary and Vienna but they have smaller houses he was testing the big house for the met next but decided against it for NY and died.
I do agree with German opera singer but on one point he leaves out, even if Corelli was more lyric his Cadenza at the end would be the same. Tucker and Caruso and even heavy voiced Jadlowker had great Cadenza's and you need that for the end here. Gigli and Mario Lanza also did not have good Cadenza's, the voice is another thing, Corelli was more a SPINTO THEN A DRAMATIC TENOR BUT HAD A DRAMATIC COLOR TO HIS VOICE.
This was not for him he had no Cadenza really and plows his way through he never sang the duke or ballo, tough singing. corelli was great as calaf and in aida but this is not for him, great voice though. I have never ever been a fan of his but admire him in two roles.
Oh Goodness, this is truly awful. Sounds like a castrato. In 3 instances he's completely off-pitch. I was expecting something decent, now I need a vomit break. Better let Pavarotti, Caruso, Bjorling, and Di Stefano sing Rigoletto.
Corelli went to Giacomo Lauri Volpi for voice instruction around 1965, because his wife (the demise of his career) said he sounded like a Baritone. The GL Volpi Tech is clearly used here; it is obvious that he is "trying" to sound like a tenor, rather than using his tech acquired by such teachers as Art Melocchi. In this performance he was definitely trying to go all Volpi. It crept into a lot of his singing in the 70's and led to the end of his career in '76.
Here he's in a downward phase of his career and Guarrette perhaps did not listen Franco in the peak of his carrer singing arias like 'Un di all'azzurro spazio' from "Andre Chenier" opera, 'Ah! Leve toi soleil' from "Romeo and Juliet", 'Ch' ella mi creda', "Core' ngrato" or "Di quella pira"...I'm portuguese,i listen opera very much and Corelli forever will be, among with Caruso, Del Monaco, Gigli, Bjorling, Lanza and Di Stéfano, truly one of the greatest and most important tenors of all time!
Sorry but "Guarrette" is somewhat wright when he says that Corelli is not singing well..don't take me wrong, i'm one of Franco Corelli's greatest fans and for me he is the 2º greatest tenor in history after Caruso, but he is making an amount of effort a unusually sub-glotal pressure and he shakes in the final part because of that. BUT "Guarrette" cannot compare Kraus, a liggiero tenor, to Franco Corelli, a spinto-dramatic tenor, the dramatic repertoire is demanding and completly different!
¡Espantoso! ¿Este es el gran Corelli? No vale nada.
Whaht a pity!!! i wish there are no such recording on you tube, cause Corelli is the best in heavier roles and earlier!! Not even a genius can be perfect all the time .. give him a break!!!
Come on, you compare this old Corelli, way past prime, singing something from Rigoletto, even though he couldn't sing lyric roles that well even during his prime years, with a young, prime Bjorling, high placed lyric, of course Bjorling's going to be better! But we turn around and compare Franco's Radames to Bjorling's (who did sing the role).
You're not biased when you recommend Jussi over others. That's given. It's actually disrespecting to even compare Mr. Bjorling with the others. Because u and the others who know, knows Jussi is an exiquisite anomaly, hence absolutely incomparable.
i wasn't talking about Corelli, but it doesn't matter who it is. To me, other than Jussi, they all sounded about the same: boring-thick-hairy-gross guys (oops Domingo isn't gross lol) with huge egos & bad breath! Basically, a parody, as some reviewer aptly put it. It was Jussi that turned my aversion to tenors completely around.
Oh my God, how can you say that??? listen to Corelli in Cavalleria Rusticana or his Manrico .. he is amazing... here he is older and this role is not for his voice!!! He was also very nervous thats why he retired early!
Lol, again i wasn't really referring to Corelli... Sorry if i offended Mr. Corell and u. And i am sure he's fantastic, esp in heavier roles like u say.
well to answer all of your questions too, despite of being sick or not, corelli had the biggest stage fright of all. this was most likely in the beginning of the concert, where he's still shaking of his nerves.
he was just a lil too fast, but not worst.
best of the best tenor.

muzetta100 2 years ago
0samples0 1 year ago

rodikgork 2 years ago
aguacun 2 years ago 5
rodikgork 2 years ago
jajajajajajaja! ok!
aguacun 2 years ago
georgiumsidus 1 year ago
rodikgork 1 year ago
@rodikgork Jajaj....
marcdixi 1 year ago
rodikgork 1 year ago

19Xemnas19 2 years ago

pieritlyon 2 years ago
palymusic 2 years ago 6
Gio0587 2 years ago
palymusic 2 years ago
PickBit 2 years ago
I'll reiterate what has been said already; he is not in the best vocal condition here and this is not a dramatic aria of which Corelli excelled. He still sounds 100 times better than the ridiculous sounds the tenors of today make. I would pay any amount of money to see Corelli sing this role over anyone else today.
jhugo1977 2 years ago 2
My two cents? This wasn't a good choice of aria for his huge voice at this particular time. Other arias from this same evening are absolutely spot on fantastic. In any case, I would still have been screaming "BRAVO" for my man, Franco.

Thanks

the more lyric a voice, the longer you can sing duke. so bjoerling, lanza, kraus, caruso, pavarotti, and WHOEVER ELSE FANS: corelli was not this voice type. even a great duke like carlo bergonzi put it away by the late 60's, because you have to have a lot of agility to your voice to do it now. corelli considered this role when he was able to sing it, but he never performed it because again it was just TOO lyric. still, he can sing an aria if he wants. so you blind pavarotti fans, learn for once.
JuillHope17 3 years ago
you can't compare corelli to other lyric tenors, because it makes no sense. every voice is different, and corelli is one of the last in an era of voices that were immediately distinguishable. if you don't like corelli, don't comment on this video. it's dumb to flat out go "i don't like corellI" cause why are you commenting then? so this isn't a good performance, so? there's TONS of shitty performances from every tenor you all talk about somewhere on youtube. so what? there's MORE good ones.
JuillHope17 3 years ago 2
ok, being one of the biggest corelli fans and researchers out there, and knowing a lot about all kinds of voices, especially dramatic, let me clue you all in: 1, this is in 1972 i believe, and corelli was 51. 2, corelli WAS a dramatic tenor, and you have to have listened to many recordings live and not to judge that, and by 1970 he was in slght decline, so to transpose this is natural and this role, not for his voice AT THIS POINT, is hard especially for a dramatic tenor.

I agree he was a great artist though above most others
pearlmuth3 3 years ago
Bjorling in Aida in a big house was not really best as far as the dramatic moments, his voice was not large he did it in Chicago 1958 and Claudia Cassidy loved him normally but gave him a poor review and said in the review he is my favorite tenor but it is not wise to sing it in a house this size (3,700) he is not Del Monaco. He had done it well in Sweden, Hungary and Vienna but they have smaller houses he was testing the big house for the met next but decided against it for NY and died.
pearlmuth3 3 years ago
I do agree with German opera singer but on one point he leaves out, even if Corelli was more lyric his Cadenza at the end would be the same. Tucker and Caruso and even heavy voiced Jadlowker had great Cadenza's and you need that for the end here. Gigli and Mario Lanza also did not have good Cadenza's, the voice is another thing, Corelli was more a SPINTO THEN A DRAMATIC TENOR BUT HAD A DRAMATIC COLOR TO HIS VOICE.
pearlmuth3 3 years ago
This was not for him he had no Cadenza really and plows his way through he never sang the duke or ballo, tough singing. corelli was great as calaf and in aida but this is not for him, great voice though. I have never ever been a fan of his but admire him in two roles.
pearlmuth3 3 years ago
Oh Goodness, this is truly awful. Sounds like a castrato. In 3 instances he's completely off-pitch. I was expecting something decent, now I need a vomit break. Better let Pavarotti, Caruso, Bjorling, and Di Stefano sing Rigoletto.

SPARTANO30009 3 years ago

Leve toi soleil' from "Romeo and Juliet", 'Ch' ella mi creda', "Core' ngrato" or "Di quella pira"...I'm portuguese,i listen opera very much and Corelli forever will be, among with Caruso, Del Monaco, Gigli, Bjorling, Lanza and Di Stéfano, truly one of the greatest and most important tenors of all time!
giacomoconti 3 years ago
Sorry but "Guarrette" is somewhat wright when he says that Corelli is not singing well..don't take me wrong, i'm one of Franco Corelli's greatest fans and for me he is the 2º greatest tenor in history after Caruso, but he is making an amount of effort a unusually sub-glotal pressure and he shakes in the final part because of that. BUT "Guarrette" cannot compare Kraus, a liggiero tenor, to Franco Corelli, a spinto-dramatic tenor, the dramatic repertoire is demanding and completly different!

kittycrunch456 3 years ago 2
Come on, you compare this old Corelli, way past prime, singing something from Rigoletto, even though he couldn't sing lyric roles that well even during his prime years, with a young, prime Bjorling, high placed lyric, of course Bjorling's going to be better! But we turn around and compare Franco's Radames to Bjorling's (who did sing the role).
GermanOperaSinger 3 years ago
I am a great admirer of Jussi Bjoerling's so my opinion will be sort of biased, but I honestly find Jussi a better Radames also.
primobaritono 3 years ago
You're not biased when you recommend Jussi over others. That's given. It's actually disrespecting to even compare Mr. Bjorling with the others. Because u and the others who know, knows Jussi is an exiquisite anomaly, hence absolutely incomparable.
kittycrunch456 3 years ago 2
i wasn't talking about Corelli, but it doesn't matter who it is. To me, other than Jussi, they all sounded about the same: boring-thick-hairy-gross guys (oops Domingo isn't gross lol) with huge egos & bad breath! Basically, a parody, as some reviewer aptly put it. It was Jussi that turned my aversion to tenors completely around.
kittycrunch456 3 years ago
Oh my God, how can you say that??? listen to Corelli in Cavalleria Rusticana or his Manrico .. he is amazing... here he is older and this role is not for his voice!!! He was also very nervous thats why he retired early!
